Team for Rotherham

I'd be happy enough with this Athers. I think there's a case for Connolly at RB just 'cos you know you'll get 7/10 and another more physical presence to help out at set pieces. Could move Lyons to LB in that case or leave him on the bench. We're going to be absolutely stacked in the full back positions when Gabriel comes back, which is odd for a struggling team. You'd rather be stacked at pretty much any other position, but there we are.

I don't see that exciting front four happening unfortunately but I'd settle for Patino with some steel behind him, with Poveda to come on if needed. Can't see CJ being left out as Mick seems to like him as much as I predicted.

Thompson seriously ?
And why Grimmy ? Maxi made some very good saves tonight that kept us in it.
Patino needs a break, bench best place for him at the moment.
Patino as a sub can have more impact when players are tired, his lack of pace won't be as apparent then and he'll get an extra yard.

However Mick said the whole squad will be used given how many games we have.

So don't be surprised to see rotation.

Grimshaw
Lyons Connolly Nelson Husband
Dougall Trybull
Bowler Poveda Rogers
Yates
Would love it but he won't drop Maxwell now and Grimshaw coming in could go 2 ways. Immediate improvement or takes time to get back upto speed.

Bowler Poveda and Rogers will be completely fresh too.

Go for it...

Maxwell/Grimshaw.

Lyons, Nelson, Husband.

Poveda, Dougall, Trybull, Patino.

Bowler, Yates, Rogers.

.For crying out loud, not Dougall.

He was awful again tonight. The only thing he can do is pass the ball back to Maxwell. I'd play Callum in midfield
What were you watching! Dougall made a couple of stray passes but he has bags of energy and covers the ground box to box and has the occasional creative moment.
Connolly is a good defensive sub if he is considered as a first choice starter in central midfield we have a problem!!

People who wish to criticise Dougall forget the great crossfield ball he played to Lyons in build up to the first equaliser but jump on the misplaced ball to Bowler.

So would Mo Farah, but I wouldn't put him in the team either.

Nelson was playing on the left in the second half and played some good pass's up the touchline, made me think he was a leftie.
I am not 100% on this, if someone could confirm, but we may find he looks better on the right which I think is his natural position.

Grim
Lyons Nelson Thorniley Husband
Bowler Trybull Connolly Rogers
Space Inveda
Yates' Wine Lodge

Maxwell
Lyons Connolly Thornley hubby
Bowler Dougall Trybull rogers
Poveda Yates
Bench
Grimshaw
Cj Nelson carey lavery patino thompson

I’ve put Thornley in as I don’t think he deserved to be dropped

I honestly can't see him swapping Grimshaw for Maxwell at the moment, he's made it pretty clear who his first choice is. I hope he learned something from the way we started against Huddersfield and rectifies that but I wouldn't be surprised to see some thing similar, although he has to make at least two changes from Tuesday nights starters.
So,
Maxwell
Lyons Nelson Thorniley Husband
Bowler Trybull Dougall Rogers/CJ
Yates Poveda

Means bringing Thorniley in from the cold again, didn't even make the bench on Tuesday, it's all guess work of course but Lyons, Bowler and Yates would be my first names on any team sheet at the moment.

I don't get the Connelly love in, handy utility player to cover injuries for me.
If he was only used in midfield for example, he may improve in that role but we would lose his versatility. One of the few who I hope gets a contract extension even though we already have a 1 year option

Too slow for a Championship midfield.

The majority of us know that Athers team selection should start on Saturday but my guess is McCarthy might go with
Maxwell
Connolly Nelson Thorniley Husband
Dougall Patino Trybull
Lavery Yates Hamilton

Hope I'm wrong but it wouldn't surprise me.

The problem position is who partners Tyebull. Yes Dougall has energy and if we have a 'head of steam' then he's OK going forward, but in a game of attrition the ball would never get to the front 4. He'd pass it back for the hoof or the throw to them. It really needs a player who can pick the ball up turn, drive a few yards and find someone. Play Pat O' just that bit further forward and he'll get swamped.

What we'd give for a fit Stewart.

In a 4321? Doubt MM will choose Lavery to start again.

I really hope he doesn't pick this team but his post match interviews concern me!!
Lavery was so bad at Boro, Madine isn't available(a blessing in my opinion) so hopefully MM is forced into picking our best 11.

Lavery was shocking at Boro hence my comment but a 4231 with the best players is a must

One thing for sure he has to add creativity to the side, leaving the likes of Poveda, Bowler and Patino on the bench is negative as fuck, we looked like we'd set up tonight away from home against a top side and just trying to hit them on the counter and nick a result.

We're the home side on Saturday and we need three points, FFS Mick get some attacking players on from the start and take the game to them.

Athers I like your team and would go with that for Saturday.
Patino deserved to be left on the bench after his recent performances. Kenny Dougall adds more bite!

Grimshaw
Lyons Nelson Thorniley Husband

Bowler Connolly Patino Rogers

Poveda
Yates

Bowler, Patino and Poveda. One of those has to be on the bench, or it will business as usual i. e. overun in midfield.

You won’t get a massive argument from me if you swap Patino for Trybull or Dougall. Just think we have to take the game to Rotherham with the higher quality of Bowelr and Rogers on the field we can control the ball.

TBF I was speaking in general about flair players and the importance of having that balance between grafters and creators, for me we didn't have the flair players from the off on Tuesday and only hit our straps once they came on.

MM needs to start off on the front foot on Saturday and take the game to Rotherham.

patino for tybull would be my only swap mate. Hes had his break so hopefully patino comes back hungry. We need some creativity.. i prefer grimmy to maxi but maxi pulled of a wonder save last night at nil nil...
I think we have to have some solidity in midfield if we're playing all those flair players.
