Team for Wigan

Grimshaw
Connolly Casey Husband Thompson
Morgan Norburn Weir
Rhodes Lavery Apter/Dembele*

It won't be this, it'll be the stupid 532 again no doubt.
Grimshaw
Lyons Casey, Pennington, Husband Thommo
Norburn
Weir, Morgan
Lavery Rhodes

or

Grimshaw
Lyons Casey Pennington Husband
Apter Norburn Weir Dembele
Lavery Rhodes

I like your second one:

Grimshaw
Lyons Casey Pennington Husband
Apter Norburn Weir Dembele
Lavery Rhodes

I’d probably not risk Dembele from the start yet so I’d put Owen Dale in instead and let him run at them like he did with Pompey last year.

It looks more balanced. Push Norburn ten yards forward. He’s got a nice forward pass on him and he seems obsessed as being a very deep DM at present which wastes him.
Get Weir around their box. He scored some crackers from distance last season for Morecambe.

Switch Apter to the left and Dale to to right and I would go with that one.

Personally - whichever players are picked, if they are in the system that we are insisting on keeping - they are going to struggle. Especially in this league where teams will sit deep and look to crowd the ball out when its in their half, then break quickly down the wings or to a massive unit of a centre forward up front.

We have 3 centre backs, 2 wing backs and a holding midfielder...even if you exclude the wing backs from that (as they should be pushing up when we have the ball), then that is still 4 players who will be behind the opposition pressing line/block. If opposition have 10 or even 9 players in their defensive block, then that's 3 spare the opposition have to cover channels as well as man mark every player in the opposition half.
If the wing backs are deep (and they seem to be staggered most of the time - one high one a bit deeper, CJ being the one that's normally high) then that's 5 or 6 players behind the pressing line - so we play horizontally endlessly because that's where the players in space are.

Time to stop this 3/5/2 nonsense and get back to a 4/4/2 and attack them on the wings.

I would play Grimshaw and Rhodes the other 9 are all about the same, that's the problem I cant pick a first 11 no more outstanding players in squad

If we went 4-3-3 I wouldn’t be adverse to see Virtue in the centre alongside Norburn. Weir has to play for me as he has the technical skill for quick passing and a shot on him.

I’ll be very disappointed now we have made the signings that we have this past two weeks, if we persist with wing backs.

Who knows Virtue might not be here on Saturday

That would be my team give or take a couple of players such as Lyons over Connolly. Still not convinced with that midfield either but not seen enough of Weir to judge if he is any better than Carey.

Having seen Lyons on Tuesday, I'd want a more capable defender in a 433. Agreed about Weir, I just think Carey has been very poor this season.

If we are insisting on sticking with 3 centre backs, then I would prefer to see Connolly, (either Pennington/Marv/Casey) and Husband as the back 3...but with Connolly and Husband given the remit to join the midfield when we have the ball on their side of the pitch - and not just sit behind the play to facilitate endless (and fruitless) horizontal switching the ball over the ground.

Husband would naturally go wider and offer overlaps to the wing back/wide player on the left (and hopefully balls into the box) - and Connolly would move inside more and create a double pivot with Norburn. I would put Lyons as the right wing back and have Dale as the left wide player, as he will drift inside and create space for Husband to overlap. Lyons would stay wide and create width on that side as Connolly has gone more central.

But they have to take risks and carry the ball forwards.

But that's just if we keep that system. I personally think the 4-4-2 Critch did the first time around with the wingers pinned high and wide, cutting inside to allow the full backs to overlap worked much better. I would like to see him give that a spin again - but I think we need Joseph back to partner Rhodes for that to work.

We had this last time with Critch though if everyone remembers. He had us set up like Liverpool in that 4-3-3 and it took 6 or 7 games for him to switch to the 4-4-2 (when he realised big Gaz was in no way like Roberto Firmino!)

You’ve forgotten the new players that come in tonight before the window shuts . We have 2.5 million to spend from the yates sale 😂🍊
