The BFC FPA are delighted to stage our 5th LEGENDS Night “ The Anglo-Italian Years “
This event is taking place in the Billy Ayre Lounge in the Armfield Club
Friday 10th Feb 2023 … 7:30pm till late
We have decided to stage this event over in the Armfield Club as they have been very supportive of our FPA
Tickets are available priced at a very reasonable £ 10 each … your ticket price includes a hot-pot supper
Had a great response from the players with confirmed attendance from 17 former players :
Alan Taylor, Dave Hatton, Billy Bentley, Tony Green, Micky Burns, Tommy Hutchison, Dennis Wann, Terry Alcock, Glyn James, Peter Hardcastle, Clive Nattress, Kevin Tully,
Stuart Parker, Brian Wilson, Billy Rafferty, Chris Simpkin, Keith Dyson
Still waiting to hear back from a few more
Our Anglo-Italian Years were really successful … winning the Cup to become European Champions in 1971 … runners-up in 1972 and then competing again in 1973 where we won all 4 of our group games but failed to qualify for the later stages as Newcastle Utd had scored more goals than us in their group !
The Billy Ayre Lounge can only hold 150 people so get your tickets now to ensure you don’t miss out
Please contact me for tickets and payment methods … I can accept payment into my Halifax Bank Account or into my Paypal account

Cheers Mick !

I asked Mick to put this thread on AVFTT as I haven't as yet mastered the art of including a photo !

As a kid, maybe 10ish, I got a ticket alongside my mate in the Directors box of AS Roma. They were staying at the Imperial. They treated us very well, maybe food too, and although we lost 3-1 I came away with allsorts of Roma goodies, like scarves, signed stuff, programmes etc. On the walk home along the prom the lure of North Pier amusements kicked in and to this day I remember playing on the long machine on the left hand side where you had to land your penny inbetween the lines whilst my goody bag was at the side.

Turned round and it had gone.

Still hurts, obviously, after all these years.

Be great if Budgie, Peter Suddaby and Alan Ainscow were able to make it to this Legend’s event. Budgie our man from Oman told me he will come if his flight and car hire is paid for, I told him to get his Superman cape on and roll out his Lamborghini.

Good idea - bet they’ve never thought of that….🥴
There are 4 of our former players who played in the Anglo-Italian years that sadly are no longer with us

John Craven ( Captain ), The King and Willie McGrotty from the team that won the Cup in 1971 vs Bologna and Mick Hill who played in the 1972 final vs A S Roma

The whole evening will be dedicated to their memory

Didn’t Malcolm Smith play and score v Lanerossi - is he going ?

Yes was getting him mixed up with Mick Hill who did score !

What a game that was - best o g I have ever seen too

Might we get a friendly with Vicenza to comemorate our highest win !

Bob Stokoe RIP was the Blackpool Manager for the 3 years we competed in the Anglo Italian Cup (1971 to 1973).

Amazing effort JC, thx and well done, should be a sell out and a great night for everybody who is there.

I was 13 years old in 1971 and working weekends and holidays at the Pleasure Beach. I took time off to attend the homecoming reception in Talbot Square. As I was pedalling my bicycle along the promenade, I reached Blackpool Tower and could hear the crowd singing and Chanting and was feeling the excitement mounting the nearer I got. Then all of a sudden, BANG, CRASH , WALLOP, a car hit me and I was knocked off my bike. I was taken to BVH with cuts and bruises and a fractured wrist. So I can’t really say I was there but I tried my best !!!

I made it to Talbot Square and got right up to the town hall. I remember looking up seeing big John Craven hanging out of an upstairs window with the trophy rather merry after celebrating the win. :)

Were George Wood and Dave Lennard invited? I think they would both have been in the Blackpool squad for the 1973 Anglo Italian Cup Tournament.

Show Suddick's goal of the century on screen v Lanerossi (?) and I will turn up...you know the one I mean...where he does keepy uppy for half the length of the pitch beating 4 defenders and then lashing it in on the volley into the south stand goal..:)
The wonder goal was in a different game at home to Verona. No film footage exists.🧐

Kevin Tully didn't he get sent off on his debut 1972/73? Nattress must have seen him in the reserves as he never played for the first team.

Kevin Tully played 12 times for the Blackpool 1st team from 1972 to 1974, 11 starts + 1 sub appearance plus any appearances he made in the Anglo Italian Cup.

Both Dave Lennard ( lives abroad ) and Wee Georgie Wood ( lives in South Wales ) received our FPA Xmas newsletter that was sent out in Dec and this event featured in the newsletter so they should both be aware of it

Not heard from either of them sadly

John

Sadly not ... I don't know anyone who has a replica

I know people who have full size replicas of the FA Cup and the European Cup but sadly not the Anglo-Italian one

John
The 1971 Anglo Italian trophy definitely came back to Blackpool as I have photos of John Craven holding it at the Reception and also a photo of the squad at Bloomfield Road with the Trophy at the front. If only we had a permanent Blackpool FC Museum in one of the suites.

Deffo saw big John Craven hanging out of an upstairs window at Blackpool Town Hall showing off the trophy to the crowd below 😁👍
