The curious case of Sonny Carey

I hope this is a thread that will “age well”. I’m still working out his contribution to the team but obviously the last 3 managers all favoured him. My question is, what is it that I’m not seeing? TIA
He’s got all the attributes to be a quality midfielder in the Lampard mould. However, when he started to get into form he got injured and then we appointed Appleton who every player regressed under and who decided to pair him with another child to keep us in the Chanpionship. I hope he can get a run and crack on. It was interesting to see Garrity at Vale who was a similar case to Carey but the club obviously thought had reached the end of his development. He didn’t look outclassed and has clearly benefitted by a club having a bit of patience.

I'm not a fan really of Sonny. He has some decent attributes but I don't think he should be any more than a squad player. He may well play well today but it would take consistent continued form to change my opinion. He doesn't score many, he doesn't create much and he doesn't really tackle at all. I don't know what it is he is supposed to bring.
I don't think he's garbage, he's neat and tidy but I don't see him being the midfield presence that you woukd need to win promotion or be a comfortable championship team.

jeez, Careys a tough one to figure out. You can see he's got the ability and he's shown he can do great things but wow, has there been a player that goes missing as much as he does. Keep thinking he's gonna start showing us what he can do over ninety minutes but he keeps failing to deliver. He's had plenty of chances and you can't say that managers haven't shown faith in him but it's really getting to the point where it's now or never for him imo.

What’s with the Carey love in, he’s just not good enough!

The reason all managers have persisted with him is because all the other midfielders that we’ve had over the last 3 seasons have been equally as but but he’s more of a physical presence.

The only good thing he’s done is that one ball in the Preston game. Other than that, he’s very average!

Just shows how opinions differ. Whenever I watch him including today he normally disappears, every game. And he,s a great back passer ,arm waver and general dodger. His only redeeming feature today was he didn’t back pass as much. However his 2 good chances on goal were pathetic!! Barn door comes to mind. We will win nothing with him being a regular. I,m not even picking on him.

I thought he had a good game, despite his poor shot. He needs more consistency but he's worth persevering with.

He is better than Weir and Morgan but not as good as Virtue but as Virtue will be out for a few weeks he is our best option as a number 10. Rhodes and Lavery just does not work so it’s Lavery who needs to make way for Deembeleor Kouassi and Joseph when he is fit.

Except it was Lavery moving away from Rhodes that gave Rhodes the opportunity to shoot. Again, worth persevering with but not for 90 minutes.

and that’s been our problem over the last 3 years in that we haven’t done well in the transfer market. We’ve been crying out for some quality players who can create chances and not sit on the physios table 2/3s of a season.

Going back to Carey, he should be a player to bring off the bench or loaned out to another club in this league to find himself. We’re not in a position where we can carry all these “potential” players.

I totally agree and have been saying that for over 3 years yet we just don't seem capable of signing this elusive player, why? I have no idea, they are out there but we have tried to fill that crucial position with kids, young loan players when we need someone who can do it, they are out there but we don't seem to want to pay the money they cost, but whilst we are without that player we are always going to be short. Virtue could be that player, he has the experience now, he can score but he seems to put on a tangerine shirt and then get injured. I like Carey but he hasn't progressed at the speed I had hoped he would, but he will, he had a good game today and it showed when Morgan came on and struggled. Weir seems to be out of favour but again, another loan player who isn't really ready to give us what we want. We need to have that player as our signing, not a loan or a kid, it has been essential and we've failed.

I thought where we struggled today was in midfield
Defensively their first shot was after 65 mins but after that they had tonnes of shots as the midfield melted away — just not sharp , fast , pass efficient and tackle enough etc

The one player I think would have really been worth making a midfield around is Trybull — where is he ? Had all the experience, pedigree etc and appeared fullyfit pre—season — he‘s a seasoned pro, played premier league (won stuff)

Dougall was really poor today, but collectively we were too happy letting the defence take the decisive decisions and pressure — we nearly and should have seen it out, but not one, but 2 muck ups handed them a gift of a first goal on the edge of their box (!) — after that, I was pretty certain we wouldn’t win as they made us look the raggedside we are

Why oh why, don’t we go down the Wings ? Instead we ponce about with it, play it backwards and over hoof it. Our first goal started on the wing on the right, then after half clearing, Thompson wriggled clear to the byeline, simple pass cross, simple finish (Rhodes) — CJ had the run on their L back all match

Lavery's miss (terrible miss), just Drill it low and hitting the bar (unluckily) during our best spell should have added to the first before the ever fouled Rhodes allowed Dembele to score from a situation the ref bottled — the ref was awful (2 players booked for time wasting and a joke booking to Husband for a tackle that wasn’t a free kick !)

If it’s a bit more of an Open Match u want, it was apparent today but boy it took us a long time to get going and we‘re way too safe and wasteful when we do have it

Nice weather and pub though

Carey needs to start converting & he came close last week & today but it's no good being a nearly man. He needs to be scoring around 8-10 goals a season for me.

Look at the stats for goals and assists, not good enough for the position he plays. I'm not writing him off but until he imposes himself more when given an opportunity I would only be using him from the bench.
He's in the Connolly mould in that respect, a good sub but not a player I want to see starting regularly.

Would we feel any differently on Sonny if the 2 efforts that hit the crossbar had been 4 inches lower?
Still young and got a lot of potential, how old was GTF before it clicked

His game out of possession is not good enough. He cannot tackle and does not close down quickly enough. In possession he does have some ability. He has a good shot and occasionally makes forward progression, but more often than not turns back and makes the easy pass, either backwards or sideways.

Have to take a hard disagree on the good shot comment

I'm lost as to what Critch et al see to warrant his place in the team. He seems a top lad and I really wanted him to succeed, unfortunately he flatters to deceive and has no impact on games aside from giving the ball away and being easily dispossessed.

For me he could do with going out on loan to a league 2 team and see if he fares any better, but he really shouldn't be starting in our best X1.

He’s a good lad with a good attitude with the right attributes to be a top midfielder in this division.

As for the here and now he doesn’t affect games enough for me and doesn’t warrant a starting position and to be quite honest I don’t see what he would bring off the bench either.
