Bury,then Oldham and now Rochdale.

it seems like yesterday when we were regularly playing them.

We suffered a 1-0 loss to Rochdale less than 2 years ago putting doubt into our Play Offs.
They are now 11 points adrift and National League bound.
Oldham and Dale face Fylde next season.
Any memories of previous fixtures Against these clubs.

Remember going to Bury in the 90s on a miserable, wet day and losing 1-0, went there without much expectation of winning as they were much better than us at the time. They ended up getting promoted to division 1, something we could only dream of at the time.

I thought about that defeat to Rochdale recently when people on here were being all doom and gloom about us battling Championship relegation. Shows how quickly people have forgotten where we came from.

Plenty. Oldham was bloody cold as I recall.

Living in Bury these are all home games to me.

I seem to remember Gary Briggs being sent off at Rochdale. Can’t remember what year. Early 90s
Pre season friendly I think.

He was fouled by their annoying forward, Whitehall, who usually scored against us, so seemingly deliberately let the ball get away from himself just so he could wipe him out.

So was 1985!
Who was at that game and in the mix of that riot.

I was at that match. Thousands of Blackpool fans decended on Spotland and loads of cars were overturned after the game including a police car that one lad tried to set fire to. I remember walking past the Rochdale supporters club before the match and a TV came crashing out through the window. 😯

When I look at the decline of Rochdale and Oldham and the demise of Bury, I can only think that their potential younger fan base has just never got into them over the last 15-20 years and instead supports Utd or City. That’s also a function of the city of Manchester subsuming the identity of the towns that surround it.

In general it seems to me that the closer any “town” club is to Manchester, the harder hit they have been this century. Stockport have had a horrendous last 20 years, only emerging recently. Bolton have had their moments as well, although they have the biggest fan base by far.

When we look at the North West, by this seasons end this century will have seen Fleetwood and Morecambe, Barrow and Accy essentially having replaced Rochdale and Oldham. All dotted around the region, but not adjacent to the big cities.

I would hate to see Oldham FC go under. It holds a place in my heart.
We (Wife No 1) and I, lived in Oldham with wifes' Grandma when I worked in Manchester for 2 years in late 50s.
Went to Boundary Park, with a friend, a few times. Think it was 3rd Div North then.
My daughter was born at Boundary Park Hosp.
Really hope they stay up.

Dave not sure if you are aware that Oldham went under last season and now in the National League.
They are mid table and no chance of going down this season.
You will be able to watch them at Fylde next season.

I didn't mean 'going down'.
I meant going under, i.e. Bankrupt.
However I see that they have bought back Boundary Park, so they must be OK now.

Been to all those grounds many times and always enjoyed the grounds and the fans.
The problem living that close to City and United is that your potential will always be minimal.
Anyone know the sort of crowds Oldham got when they were top tier?

Remember going to Rochdale for a pre-season friendly and watching a 16 year old Trevor Sinclair make his first appearance for us. He caught the eye on that day.
