The Official Rishi Sunak Speech Thread

He's just told us that, as Chancellor, he concentrated solely on short term solutions and that his Party have governed that way since 2010.
 
He's dressing up the cancellation of HS2 as old politics, only looking North to South. Yet he's happy enough with HS1.
His party is applauding the idea of electrifying parts of the network that should have been done years ago.

HS2, was never going beyond the 53rd Parallel to begin with, which is all fine and dandy for the Merseyside, Manchester, Greater Leeds communities, but absolutely pointless for the rest of the North beyond it.

If the billions which was going to be spent on it improves local transport, it won't be that much of a loss - and that's from someone who uses the East Coast Main Line an awful lot more than I'd like to have to. From experience, we don't have as many people using that line as we did, whether it's permanent in a post-Covid online meeting world, or a passing trend as people avoid rail travel due to strike disruption we need to wait and see.

Network North sounds like Northern Powerhouse. Runner-up prize that ends up coming to nothing.

So they're saving money we can't afford to spend, but then spending it all on the Northern Rail network? Hmmmmmmm

You can see in his smirk as he mentions Labour that this is literlly just to create a dividing wedge so they have to either cancel HS2 or this. There are capex cut scheduled past the next election. He knows this won't get done, disparate smaller projects will be far easier to cancel withouth much media furore. It's like letting the arsonist who burnt down your house build you some new smaller ones that are all made of wood.

Or like being told the steak dinner your Southern friend is having prepared for them and the one you were promised has now been cancelled, but not to worry, there's a big plateful of shit sandwiches coming out so you won't go hungry.

Bollocks. Sunak said the Richmond electors put character above race when they chose him. I disagree. With the Tories and upper classes generally, race, ethnicity, even gender take a back seat as long as the individual in question is 'one of them'.
 
So Sunak says a key principle ( even if vacuous bilge) is to prioritise long term decisions. So he cancels the Northern section of HS2 , a major long term project. Prioritises short term populist legislation to make it hard for LAs to introduce LTNs , 20mph zones.. Govt fails to process asylum claims so they continue to build up.
Whatever extra they give to selected towns wont be given to the large majority. LAs already having suffered large budget cuts .

My Mrs has always defended the UK as still a force to be reckoned with on the world stage despite me telling her otherwise but was astonished to see Sunaks wife come on first and went on to say it’s just not right having these people in charge of Britain. She’s right, what the fuck is going on, the country is a laughing stock and there isn’t even a remotely rational alternative.

I have no idea what the answer is other than just leave the gaff, which I did!

Not completely. He's going to make it harder for people to have access to benefits. This from a party that supported and developed the introduction of UC as a way of making it beneficial to be in work whilst claiming benefits.

The usual scrounger bashing, when the ability to impose sanctions is already there, impacting an absolutely tiny proportion of claimants. The biggest fraud is on pensions but they daren't clamp doen on them All talk and absolutely no new ideas other than pandering to the gullible.

Anyone who has seen I, Daniel Blake knows there is already a sanctions process that is more than stringent as it is.

You suggest a man of Indian heritage doesn't know what or why he feels how he does. You know what that is.

And you don't half make a sweeping statement about how people think.

I know class warfare when I smell it. Besides, the Tories themselves rejected him for leadership of the Party. Now I am not saying there is any racism involved - I am anti-racist by both reason and emotion. But I stick to my guns in believing that the Tories elect people to fill the higher positions in the Party by virtue of their class.

Good point about promising the world Mac. That's exactly what Keir Flipflopper has been doing. I could say I'd like to see him when he has the grown up job instead of being forever a shadow, but I don't want to see the country led by someone so ill equipped.
