The Old Yates Building (Talbot Sq.)

I didn't know it was the pet shops teenage son! Are you sure about that?

I'd heard it was some other well known (to the police), drugged-up scrote.

Absolutely tragic what happened that night.
I could be wrong, itā€™s a vague memory, Iā€™ll look into it.

Did some reading and thereā€™s no mention of the owners son, so apologise, it was probably just jungle drums at the time.
Apparently a 21 yr old man was arrested shortly after who confessed, only for the case to collapse when forensic scientists proved he was lying!!
The Police have always maintained it was arson.

Anyone know what is happening with the old Savoy bowl building. There is been scaffold up now for years and nothing has been done. It's a shame because it is a nice Art deco building too. The council really need to come down on the owners of these buildings and make them get them up to scratch.View attachment 3822
The council are too intent in getting rid of green space in the town and building car parks for folk to park in town even though there are no descent shops to shop at!!šŸ˜”

The 21year old was a well known young man who was cared for in the community but needed more help than he was given. He was obsessed with the pet shop parrot and broke into the bosley arcade to watch it at night as you could still see into the shop when the shutters were down from the arcade.
On a cold night, after the pub was closed he broke into the arcade and made himself a fire to keep warm whilst watching the parrot, the fire got out of control and the rest is well documented.

The police charged him with arson, it was never arson and that is why the case collapsed, forensic evidence all backed this up.

Walked past the Old Yates building (now Premier Inn) a few days ago.
Got to say, looking from the outside, the building looks impressive.

The biggest surprise to me, that I didn't know about, is that there is a large bar/pub on the ground floor, (which is already fitted out and looks ready to go).
Looks bigger than the Old Yates's bar too.

Took an age to get plannimg permission, but first impressions are good.
Good to see they are doing long overdue works on the outside of The Clifton Hotel as well, on the junction of Talbot Square/promenade.

And going inland, up Talbot Rd, I also notice that eyesore (Wilkinsons building) has all but been demolished.

Some Good Progress at last šŸ‘
The old Yates building was bloody brilliant! I worked there in 1972.Great place, full of character and characters. It was a crying shame it had to close.

It was a beautiful big old parrot. I used to go out of my way when in town there especially to see it. A sad sad end to its life.

I may be wrong, but didn't one go into the basement for Yates?
The toilets in the main Yates were downstairs but outside was the Bosley Grill - at the back was the parade of shops and the entrance to the Tivoli cinema upstairs - last film i saw there was Alien - donā€™t know which was scarier, that film or some of Yates clientele down in the bogs!

We used to go in Jenks over the road, rush over to Yatesā€™s in the band intervals for some White Biddies, on to the Crown in Town then back for the 2nd set in Jenks but then we had a few ā€œroutinesā€ back then!

The new pub is called the 3 piers. Looks quite good. Seems to have taken an age to build the hotel but it looks good. A lot better than those boards that were there for 10 years plus
Agree, lots of people quick to slat everything but I think it looks great.. office workers come in, new tram station etc... it all takes time but future does look good for our beloved town imo.

Bit spooky but I was just thinking about the Tivoli just before I opened this thread.

For some reason that completely escapes me, my mum and dad thought it was a good idea to take me there to see the original black and white version of Night of the Living dead. I mustā€™ve been aged about 11 and it was an X. Scared the wits out of me and I had nightmares for years afterwards. God knows what they thought it was meant to be about.

And I remember the pet shop very well. Used to love going in there, but we never bought anything.

I have a few vivid memories of that building :

The Bosley Grill, I had my 21st Birthday dinner with my family in 1968 there. I was at the time on the kitchen at the Savoy Hotel and had booked the night off so I could go for the meal. Unfortunately, two chefs rang in sick and I had to work until 7.30 then get a taxi to Talbot square. I wasn't in the best of moods having just finished an 11 hour shift so left half my dinner, much to my dad's disgust.

The Tivoli Cinema, one of my first proper dates was on the back seats watching, supposedly, Doctor No and managing for the first time in my life to get past the knee of my female companion. Naughty boy. šŸ˜² šŸ˜‰

The tobacconist was where I bought my first pipe and tobacco after giving up cigarettes. They advised me to buy a decent pipe and strong tobacco which burnt milder than mild tobacco.

I used to love watching the animals in the window of the pet shop, but always felt sorry for them.

Yates, of course, was visited many times, but was no go during Glasgow Fair weeks. It is the only bar I can think of where the money was sent to an office via a pod and the change returned the same way.

Memories are what you live your life for.

That sounds very familiar, exactly what we did.

The Yates triangle was the place to be when I was young. The Bosley Grill was always a place to take your date if you wanted to make an impression. Silver service, great steaks and exotic wines from faraway places like France. On the other hand, Yates was where you went with the lads. Aussi white and chasers before crossing the road to Jenks. The Tivoli was a great little cinema and the pet shop was a fantastic pet shop with animals in every window. The parrot was brilliant and we taught it to speak a range of swearwords. Later, there was a snooker hall in the Tivoli basement. Good days.
Exactly how I recall it You must be the same age as me Loved carriages it was a go to and I remember having blobs in Yates with one time some Londoners on a stag do who thought their glass was warm from the dishwasher for their beers šŸŗ
