The Paradox That Is Kenny Dougall

I’m pleased that Kenny is getting international call-ups as this is rightly the recognition for him that he’s playing football at that level and a great honour for him to be selected to play for his country.

For Pool fans this brings great pride in terms of where we are and how far we’ve come in recent years, but the concern will naturally be the impact it may have on the squad on his return. Partially I guess from potential injuries but more so from the jet lag that might affect his performances on his return. We’re not over blessed with other players in his position should Stewart not be fit.

Negatives aside, we’ll done to him…..

Yes, so you can see why all the prem players suddenly pick up a mystery injury when were playing another completely pointless friendly

Purely my opinion this:
Kenny needs to step up his performances for us and be more consistent in the engine room. He gained somewhat legendary status with his Wembley double, but hasn't had a shot on target since & he dodged the physicality in the Joke City game.
Club first - country second.
That's one that I literally don't agree with.

I certainly wouldnt say dodged. I felt there were a number of them and it certainly wasnt just Kenny that didnt step up in second half against Stoke, sometimes its not easy to regain a foothold. Dougall and Wintle have been immense for me. My concern around the international call-up is the travel. Kenny was sub at Forest after the last international break and possibly will be again at Swansea in a fortnight. Back to a point I made on another thread, we talk about squad depth, but when you take away the first XI the depth is not just as strong in some positions. With three central midfielders out injured, this is one such position.

The big concern is the prospect of losing Wintle back to Cardiff in January. Stewart will be fit very soon but for how long will he stay fit?
We need a crunching midfielder to bully the opposition e.g. Charlie / Gnashers.

Maybe time to try something different? A ball playing midfielder alongside Wintle for instance. Or could Connelly manage stepping into midfield? He has somethng to prove. I can't see Stewart being able to achieve a run of games, which is a great shame.

Why do we need to try something different? We're 13 points away from relegation and 1 point from the POs, pretty sure we're doing ok?

People need to seriously relax. Some stupid stuff posted on this forum the last 24 hours.

Point is we might not have our first or even second choice defensive midfield players fit and available, so may need to try something else. What's stupid about that if you don't mind me asking?

My feelings exactly. If somehow we could get someone with a bit of height, physicality and a goal or two in them, even better 👍
Doesn't mean I agree with the comments regarding KD's performances this season though. He's still doing the job for me. He gets his foot in and breaks it up. Working well with Wintle (wot...) and as Kurt says, almost always up against a 3 which is tough going. Not concerned about his 'lack' of goals as Wembley was the exception, not the rule.

No nor me. He's often up against it due to our 442 set up. I'd love a driving midfielder though, someone to win it and carry it through the centre. Then ping it in the top corner obviously.

Wasn't really calling you stupid, I'm saying in general there has been some stupid stuff posted recently and an element of remaining calm is required.

I got what you were on about and think you're right. There's a few who seem to think that a player has to be outstanding every game to justify his spot.

We'll need Stewart fit for Swansea because after his trip to Australia I'm guessing Kenny will be jet-lagged.
Kev can put in thirty minutes and then go off as normal ☹️

Has he finished a match this season?

Agree 100%

It's like the opposition don't exist. If a player doesn't perform perfectly then it's because they're fundamentally not good enough.

The reality is, every player, even Salah or whoever sometimes meets an opponent who gets the better of them.

Similarly, even the best players do make mistakes. The hypothetical new signing that would replace them would always be better than the opponent and never make an error of judgement.

Then that player signs, turns out to be human and then they need replacing by another hypothetical player and so on.

Totally agree. I’ve been watching Wintle and Dougall. Closely in the games. Kenny doesn’t like to stick tight on anyone running off him. At times we seem to be a team that marks space not the opposition.

Had 1 off target against Cardiff.
3 against Huddersfield, 1 on target.
1 blocked shot against Reading.
1 off target against Preston.

Thanks Insider. I was almost right, but it appears he has had one shot saved this season.
Kenny has shown that he can score goals, so come on Kenny, push forward and when you see the onion bag shoot (as my old PE teacher would tell me).
