The travesty that is Radio Lancs

Remember when this tinpot station used to be semi-essential listening? Not any more!

Just to add insult to injury after yesterday's shambles I decided to tune to this station for the first time in forever for my journey home in the car. I was subjected to around 45 beyond mind numbing minutes of all things Blackburn, Nobbers, Accy, Burnley, and Fleetwood. Lowlights included John Coleman moaning about aspects of Accy's huge win, banal interchanges between the anchor team of Andy Bays and that Steve Eyre nobhead (still loves the sound of his own opinions btw), sundry additional Nobbers etc etc ad nauseum. With no mention of our game forthcoming I was just about to give it up as a bad job just before 6pm when they cut to a breathless Chizzy interviewing Critch. In the ten seconds or so this lasted it sounded like Chizzy was having an advanced attack of emphysema, until they suddenly dropped the link and cut to an interview with....... James Tarkowski of Burnley. They then cut back to the studio with absolutely no explanation, pronouncing that we would hear from El Critch later on the Radio Lancs social media channels. You really couldn't make it up.

Because I have an hours drive home after a match I do tune in to Radio Blackburn.
What you have reported is not uncommon.

We get our share of air time in my opinion, just not last Saturday with 2 local derbies. All away games live. Recently a lengthy feature on Critch and Community Trust winning their awards. Also I’m a big fan of Nish’s Number in the afternoon 😎.

Yes I listen every Monday night/Friday night for the previews and reviews. I heard the bit you are on about when they cut Critchleys interview, someone probably cocked up the recording. They tweet out all the post match interviews an hour later anyway so check their twitter. Hard rovers/PNE talk was to be expected on Saturday night plus Accy were playing Fleetwood.

Listen I appreciate the job they do and the time needs to be split between all our clubs fairly but they dont half waste a good chunk of that time talking bollocks for the first fifteen minutes and then its a mad rush to fit three teams in ten minutes at the end and all we get is an interview with the manager and very little about the game. In fairness maybe they dont have much detail to talk about as they dont rewatch the games (im not going to ask them to watch seven games by the time Monday arrives)

I like Alan Nixon when hes on proper football talk when hes on. Steve Eyre has good insight as does Colin Greenall again proper football talk and Simmo is a welcome addition aswell again good football insight.

Was thinking exactly the same on my way home. Not a mention until just before six when Critch came on. Two seconds worth and a woman started talking. I presumed my radio had auto tuned to GMR or suchlike.

Still, I heard plenty about every other team in the area...

Ridiculous. Leading Championship side and far less coverage than Stanley and Morecambe. As for Rovers...

as the o/p says, it used to be compulsive listening but now it's shiite. Only time have it on is in the car after the game on the way to the pub. So yep heard Coleman, heard the presenters discussing Rovers and how the nobbers were robbed by a poor decision not to send off a rovers player and then a few txts read out was it PNE Joan moaning about it? and then thankfully got to the pub. Not sure I heard the word Blackpool once in the half hour I was in the car.

Used to love listening to the ‘phone in‘ especially after a Pool win. Late 90’s there always seemed to be a Burnley fan who came on uttering the legendary phrase, “ I’ve been on turf today Gary, it’s no good, he’s got to go” appertaining to which ever manager was at the helm at the time! 🤣

I often tune in to Radio Lancs Sports show at 6pm. Usually as I am driving. Have to say I quite like it and we are lucky to have such a service.

I wouldn't complain as a Lancs sports show is something I'd rather have than not. I think they do ok with fcuk all resources.

I listen all the time and think they do a good job. So they mucked up one time cutting an interview short, so what? They put every post match interview on Twitter from all 7 clubs. The Monday review show and Friday preview show are both very good. Maybe it's just me but Blackpool FC is not all I'm interested in, don't mind listening about the other teams the same as I listen to five live sometimes.

Yes, and we had exactly the same thoughts!

I thought Critch's interview cut short because we'd gone into GMR's frequency area, but obviously not. Shite!

I’m glad it wasn’t just me!
For some reason I tend to like listening more to Critch after games like Saturday’s where we have struggled.
I waited until 5:55 them though right, let’s hear what he has to say. “We lost because we didn’t do well enough in both boxes …..” then some random woman starts talking!
Two minutes later I waited for the explanation from the presenter, but he ended at 5:59 as though nothing had happened.
I know they put the interviews online after 6 but it really wound me up to the point where I was thinking about emailing to complain. But then I got a life 😂

I drive back to Southport after every game, and it’s dominated by t’rovers (manager sounds like he’s in monotone black and white tv) accy (painfully sounding manager), knobbers (nuff said)…..oh then morcambe (no offence), then non league catch up…. Then a minute on the mighty!! We obviously got more coverage when we beat t’rovers, but that’s maybe obvious?? Tbh, I’ve almost given up and have five live or talk sport on. Or if we’ve not played well, or lost heart 70’s/80’s! 😂

Well each to their own but like I said, I haven't listened for a good while. Their "balance" or as I'd call it, apologism for the regime during the boycott still rankles. They haven't learned a thing.

Doesn't it finish at 6.00pm?

It's a radio show. I don't listen to twitter.

As a club we never get more than 2 minutes in an hours programme covering 6 clubs. And then we lose that for some more Rovers stuff.

Can't remember. 5 till 6 maybe. I quite like it. Usually carting or waiting for kids sporting activities. Theyve also played some gold interviews from old players of the past, usually when they have died or on a special anniversary.

It's a small budget station catering to the whole of Lancashire. I think they do a really good job. I've no beef listening to interviews with all the other local rivals managers, players, ex players etc. It's free and it's interesting.

It probably appeals to a lot of elderly and blind local sports fans so good on them.

Don't get the hate.

Look I know you live in another region so probably don't listen other than driving home from a game. They put out hours and hours of sports broadcasting every week and it's very good. We get plenty of coverage , the pundits are good mostly and they cover a lot of Lancashire cricket. They have 7 local teams to cover plus non league which is more than most other local stations, all on a small budget and do an amazing job. Nearly all our games are on live as well. To ignore all that and pick on one incident is so unfair.
People are even picking on them for the boycott years. They gave more airtime to Chrisine , BST and others than anybody else . If you ask Christine I'm sure she will concur. Yes they had restraints of BBC impartiality but they gave us a platform loads and loads of times.
Some people post glib comments on here criticising when they hardly listen. It's not representative of what they do and if you listened properly over a period you'd realise that.

I only really listen to RL on my way back from Saturday home matches as I live in the Manchester BBC area, which incidentally I never listen to whatsoever.

Like others I was waiting to hear the Managers thoughts on Saturday when hey presto a few seconds in we got some Burnley player instead having already had their Manager and their supporting pundits views several times.

The fact they made no comment or apology for the obvious cock up did really annoy me at the time.It was if they hadn’t be listening themselves and hadn’t noticed.

Having said all that if I do listen to RL whether it be the sport( though do seem to have some fixation with T’Rovers) news or music I have to say they are normally ok.

Radio Blackburn - & Rovers fan Graham Liver love in.
We remember well, when Gary Hickson (then sport) constantly defended the scum during the phones in. We've never listened to him since & when he's standing in for another presenter, we switch channels to Smooth 👍
Try Boom Radio…not that you will get any sport but you will get great music😉

We listen to Radio Lancs every day.
However the sports reporting is so biased towards Blackburn Rovers I often turn it off.
Tony Mowbray, like him or not, gets more 'airtime' than all the rest put together.
Hope someone from Radio Lancs reads this.

I would assume they have to weight their output in proportion to the demographics of their listeners . If they have more listeners in east lancs, then that areas teams may get more coverage.
Having said that, the coverage on non-match days is pretty in-depth. You can often put it on midweek at 6 and within that hour there will be interviews, features etc on different local clubs, and we do get our fair share.
I think on a derby day, or if a particular team is doing significantly better or worse than others, you could expect more coverage of them - it's more newsworthy. You'd expect more nobbers coverage this week with them just having sacked their manager.

If Lancs are basing their coverage of teams on the level of interest in them, why are they putting equal resources into coverage of Morecambe, Fleetwood and Accy? The first two average gates of less than 4K, Accy less than 3K despite the large away followings that come to those grounds.

The three clubs have done fantastically well to get to League 1 but they simply don’t have the fan base to justify similar coverage to us Blackburn and Preston.

Would rather listen to archive recordings of WW2 broadcasts from Radio Hamburg with Lord Haw Haw crowing over how many chip shops the Luftwaffe have destroyed in Darwen😜

Actually I don’t have any real problems with Radio Lancashire Sport. In their listening area, the station has 7 teams to cover and we always get a Blackpool away match covered.
I would rather listen to local radio any day than a commentary on 5 Live with all the background noise. There’s only two things at the moment that spring to mind. Brett as a summariser. I can’t do with “You know” which you get up to 5 or 6 times following a question to him. Loved him as a footballer though.
The station not referring to proper Real Lancashire derbies. They would rather sit on the fence and call a Blackpool v Bolton match or a Wigan v Fleetwood a NW Derby rather that a Lancashire Derby.

OK, I realise I've been somewhat provocative regarding this organ (as they say in Private Eye), perhaps even insinuating that historically they have a hint of "eau de fungus" about them and should there fore earn our contempt - or at least a degree of contempt from those who observed the boycott. However on one thing we must all agree. They have provided one stellar service to sporting reportage. Namely, they have provided a platform for one of the finest orators in sports commentary history, namely, the Chizzmeister. All hail! 🏝️🤸‍♂️ 🍞 👍
