This country is fcuked.

The 13 years of electing bad governments happened because the opposition parties have been so poor they were unelectable. Sure, the Tories could have done better, but nobody in their right mind could have made an intelligible decision to vote for Labour. What this thread is about is the country being fcuked. Countries are fcuked when like Iran women are executed because they are wearing the 'wrong' clothes. Countries are fcuked when like Ukraine the people go to bed not knowing if they will be bombed and where 7 million people are heading for winter with no heating. Countries are fcuked when like Russia the people are told their sons died fighting to protect them from nazis. Countries are fcuked when like Sudan there is no medicine or food for the people. Countries are fcuked when like Saudi a journalist critical of the government is invited to its embassy where he is chopped into pieces and put out with the garbage.

People in this country have no idea what hardship is. They think the Government should bail them out because they can't afford an iphone 14 and can only take one week holiday in Florida this year instead of two. They think having to choose between food and Sky tv is poverty. 60 years of soft living have blurred the perceptions of the overfed, spoiled, entitled UK citizen who really has no idea what suffering is. It's a good job Putin didn't choose to invade the UK because I fear that he would have been faced with a nation so soft that the people would be queueing to surrender. If there is a single reason to believe that the UK is fcuked it's that far too many of its citizens are suffering from acute entitlement syndrome and have lost sight of reality.
Got bored after 2 sentences.

Guessing the rest of it was about how hard people have had it, down coalmines, national service, bloody foreigners etc etc.

The boomer generation are most well off in the history of Britain yet they are also the most selfish and hateful.

Voting for Brexit was a good thing then because it'll make life a bit harder for us all and toughen us up.
It also comes with the added bonus of preventing the softest ones ftom running off to somewhere like France or Spain when it gets too tough for them here.
Brexit hasn't the instant impact of a war or a totalitarian dictatorship but give it 50 years and the British will be as tough as anyone in the poorest countries👍

I'm pretty sure that there is always an inherent element of relativity whenever someone talks about the state of this country, although it is perhaps a useful exercise now and then to remember and recognise how many people have it worse around the world. I suspect most people like doing that not because it makes them feel sorry for those other countries and stirs them into wanting to help, perhaps by accepting more refugees, but because they want to feel better about the UK and chastise those who don't agree with their view on it. I would also suggest if you think people who have it hard in this country are choosing between one and two holidays to Florida a year you are remarkably out of touch about just how much some people are struggling.

Spot on Allez. Sat with Aussies recently in Scotland (who all had been here many times) and they were shocked what a mess the country is in.

Great post TTJ, however you did forget to add about going down to your local Wetherspoons and seeing the usual unemployed dole claiming layabouts who will think nothing of spending their money on drink, drugs and cigs EVERY DAY.
Guaranteed they will all have mobile phones as well and yet they will be the first to say they are living in poverty yet they have no intention to get a job.
You see them in every town and city across the Country and yet the Government get blamed for this sad state of affairs.
No one even considers how much is spent on these dregs of society but it must be billions each year; and what do they give in return? Absolutely fcuk all.

Its still possible I strongly suggest you do it.

I left 9 years ago and will never live in the UK again, the drop in standards just wouldn't make sense.

I currently have the dilemma of applying for a German passport so that i can have the option to live elsewhere in the EU as well but I don't want to surrender my UK passport. I'll just have to see if my thoughts change in future.
Doesn´t the German government allow dual citizenship? The British government does. I have the option of a Portuguese passport so I´ve looked into it.

You talk about people in hardship being the dregs of society? You don't deserve a considered answer to that. Pubs have always had and will continue to have its bar flies. But I'll let you into a secret...they're not the struggling ones: it's the one parent families, the long term disabled, the educated and skilled people who can't get the jobs they're educated for, the people holding down two or three jobs - probably including bar work to serve your "dregs of society."

Very well put. Interestingly I just read an article that the DWP has wasted £350m fighting appeals from disabled people who have been denied (and later won at tribunal) their claims for financial support. The article features an amputee who was denied and later won at appeal. Surely we should also be seeing furious indignation at this waste of money too? The 'war on benefits scroungers' comes at a high price. But at least you can use tough rhetoric in election campaigns.

Unfortunately the German constitution doesn't allow it unless you have a very strong reason in exceptional circumstances, such as a threat to your safety.

Forgive me but I can't remember your original post. Do you have residency in Germany?

Permanent resident but not citizenship, its not a problem if I stay in Germany but I dont have the right to live/work in the other EU countries. My m issus is from a different EU country so at some point we might be living elsewhere and it may be necessary to retire my UK passport for the German one, which quite frankly I don't like the idea of.

Can't wait to get out full time. Unfortunately, we don't have freedom of movement anymore so I'm locked in this depressing prison of a country for a bit longer yet 😁

I see. Well, that just goes to show how each country in the EU still has its own policy, which is good but obviously it doesn't work in your case.

I feel so much better now you've set the bar so low. Yes I wasn't Jewish in nazi Germany, I wasn't an Ethiopian in 84, I didn't live in horishima in 1945 or Chernobyl in the 80s. I didnt fight in the battle of stalingrad, i didn’t live through the bubonic plague. What a time to be alive!

OK clearly the fact that most of the world is groaning with pain, politically, economically and climatically while the UK remains relatively pain free doesn't convince some people that England is an amazing place to live. I am in Ireland at the moment, which, on the surface, is a thriving country with among the highest individual earnings per capita in Europe. I love the place, but the few hospitals it has are too full to take admissions, schools are bursting at the seams in many places and are closing because of lack of demand in others, there is very little infrastructure in place to deal with the disabled, there are almost no train services outside of the capital, there remains an underlying air of concern over the Ulster friction and what the future might bring, immigration is an increasing problem and the EU is seeking to cut subsidies for the country's main industry, farming. Add to that the fact that prices are often twice as high as the UK and what you are left with is a beautiful country with a very high cost of living and many many problems. Would I live in Ireland? Yes I have a house there. Is it a better place to live than England? Other than as a desirable holiday destination, absolutely not. Most countries have similar issues to deal with and their citizens generally accept that, but for some reason many Brits believe that its issues are peculiar to Britain. Clearly they're not and whether or not we change governments the problems will remain.

It's not only the UK. Canada is a shambles. If you've been here on holiday in the past, head over again and you'll see the downturn here. Filthy cities that used to be spotless. Prices out of control etc.

I visited relatives in Canada last year. I'd previously been in the 80's and also 10 years ago.
Yes I could see a downturn, but not quite the filthy cities you describe. What was a shock was the price of food and the price my relatives are paying for gas, electric etc. And we thought we had a cost of living crisis! Of course we have but nowhere near Canada.

sorry to hear this, visited Toronto about 6 years ago and was fantastic. Was hoping to go Vancouver next year ....

I can't comment on the UK. Maybe after October when I visit my Sister, I'll have more of an idea.
Without getting political, Canada went downhill with the current government. My opinion only.

If you get over that way, make sure you visit Vancouver island. Victoria is a beautiful little city and if you can stand the 6 hour drive, go up to the west coast to Tofino and Ucluelet. Long drive but very scenic drive and well worth it.

I'm currently on holiday in Miami. Nice place but go half a mile from the beach front is a dive similar to some places in the UK. I fought for our beloved country for 25 years so I think I have the right to comment. I was raised in a shit hole called Moston manchester loved the place. Like some previous people have stated we still have beautiful places in the UK. But expensive to live there. It's all about grafting as hard as you can get a bank balance behind you and if you raise anything over around 150k you can afford to live in a lovely area.. Well maybe 200k. It's all about the people who live in the places for me, and good and bad everywhere. Pardon my language but in my experience it's 70% nice people 30% cretins.
