Thought we were excellent today

Let’s have a thread praising the team, management and players. Yes we can improve on finishing but our overall football, work rate, patterns of play were in my opinion excellent and against a good team we were desperately unlucky. Play like that every week and we’ll be ok. Just sickens me some thick people having a pop at the owners as if we have a divine right to beat teams.

I think the workrate from the players was excellent, decsion making often not so much. Sitting back with all the players in the defensive third is not a tactic that is going to work in any division.

No pops at the owners - done everything about as right as they could have done it.

Effort against both Barrow and today unquestionable, it's the end product that's letting us down time after time and today I saw the reason why Prem clubs are holding out paying the quoted 3million for Bowler.

Grimshaw - couldn’t fault him as he had zero chance at saving their breakaway goal, but otherwise pretty good

Defence - Shaky as f@ck with this playing out from the back routine. Scares the living daylights out of me. Marv looks lost without Keough’s steadiness alongside him, and Rhys Williams isn’t a good replacement.
im hardly enamoured by Dom Thom yet, but he does have possible potential
Nothing went right for Callum today, but he’s Mr. reliable on the whole.

Midfield - Dougall was quietly reliable , Patino has class touches and can play long balls to perfection ( 20 minute cameos not long enough to see what he can do ) , Fiorini must have a risky photo of Appletons Mrs to blackmail him with , as he’s simply bollocks !
Carey is someone I desperately want to flourish, but just can’t see it

Forward line - Josh is man marked out of games, but seems to thinks it’s a one man game when he gets a ball.
Theo looks light on his feet, but isn’t direct enough.
love Jerry , even though that penalty was dog sh!t, but he knows that.
Lavery looked like he had a kick up the backside and looked decent and wanted the ball.

Hubby, Thorniley , Big Gaz , Gabriel next time please
And give Apter a go FFS !

Rant over .

Williams isnt as comfortable on the left hand side, he simply plays a ball to thompson even when Thompson has a man on, i think hes a very good defender though.
There wasnt a single team in the champs last year that could play well out of defence when put under pressure. We were and are no exception.
Marv got in enough blocks and last ditch tackles to tell me hes back on course, but this playing out from literally the six yard line is like watching a new born giraffe takes its few first steps while a pride of lions watch on.
Thomson has abillity but if Husband is fit I'd bring him back in to steady us defensively.
Couldnt find much fault with Callum personally. i think its a common problem when you have bowler in front of you and you are defending very deep we are going to put the full back under pressure.

Dougall had a decent game as you say quietly reliable
Fiorini looks really good when hes got a mountain of space to work in, otherwise hes very head down, gets caught in possession too easily too often.
Carey just didnt get going today,

Corbaneau another head down player - had a decent run and shot early on and then . . . . . . not much really. two decent feet, can get an early cross in, can beat a player, but . . . . dont know yet really

agree about Jerry and Lavery. they seem to be starting to understand one another as well. if they can get firing together i think its a 35 goal combination.

Bowler - ah Josh bowler the enigma - one minute waltzing around three players but never never ever sees a simple pass whether driving forward or on the edge of his own penalty area. He had three assists for the whole of last season, which should tell us something.

I want to see Patino start, for someone who looks quite slight hes got a bit of bite in the tackle and hes prepared to chase down everything. Him sat behind jerry and Lavery makes me drool like the aformentioned pride of lions.

Agree with much of that but feel Grimshaws distribution is shocking and that lets him down a bit...very good shot stopper...I thought Thompson was good but I need to see the goal again...Theo was abject and I couldnt get to more than 3/10 for him or Josh...too many passengers again

Patino will start on Tuesday I would think.

I’m more than happy to see the ball being played forward instead of 60 minutes of backpassing like last season 😎

Marv played a fair few games without Keough last season and was fine - with Hubby and Thorniley next to him. I'd say the issue is the lack of cover in front of him in midfield. And not having Dougall, Wintle or Stewart consistently available to pick the ball up off him.

DT was MOM hands down.

Gabriel, Husband are the answer

Apter would be out of his depth.

First half today was just about the worst I've seen. We seemed to be scared of going near them. Theo and Sonny are not really good enough. Bowler unfortunately can only see his name up in lights. He needs to realise he is not the only player out there. I know this sounds as if I do nothing but moan but I will always support my team and as TS said I hope we are not cut shrift by the time we gel. UTMP

Thought we were 4/10 first half, they were 6/10. We gave the ball away so easily, and the lost passes were laughable. They played it like a training game they had so much space.
Second half and especially when Lavery came on thought we improved massively. The pace, the pressing suddenly all looked really positive. The missed pen was obviously a bad thing, but we were on too and felt a goal was coming. Even after the pen we carried on and really should have capitalised. Bowler needs to be more instinctive re shooting. I’m all left footed myself but there are times you just have to have a go! 4-5 extra touches just gave the swans defence more time to regroup. Shame as he got himself into some great positions.
All in all, we should have got at least a point out of it, but that’s how tight things are- we end up with zero points. First half was poor, they maybe should have benefitted more?
Upwards and onwards, UTMP!

Good performances with no goals? We can perform like 09 Barca if we want but if went can’t score against Swansea, who didn’t look fantastic may I add, it won’t go too far in this league.

I know that mistakes cost you goals. I know you're a prick, I know I was watching, playing and studying football long before you were around.
You're the only one that can't see DT had a brilliant game, a neutral would say you don't know what you're talking about...

"Studying football" 😂😂😂🤡🤡🤡

we lose 1-0 and DT makes a massive mistake for their goal and you give him MOM?. Looked like he was running in treacle trying to catch their guy up too..
We all have our favourites. 😉
He wasn't the only player to make a critical mistake today.
The conundrum is do we swap his youthful enthusiasm for reliable and experienced Hubby? I don't know thee answer to that. Do you have an opinion?

This has always been a problem for me.
You notice when Grimmy roles it out short to Williams on the left, he can only move it short with his right foot to Williams or whoever.
Put Thorniley there and he can quickly switch play with an Evattesque raking crossfield pass.
Round pegs in round holes. 👍

He cost us a point, it's as simple as that. It was a rank bad mistake.Pure and simple.

Id be tempted to play Husband instead of Williams tbh.
Thought Williams was poor 1st half.

We do Insy and Bowler deserves pelters for today. His last miss was that bad and that high over the bar I even thought it must have got a deflection, Nevertheless it was Thompsons critical mistake that cost us a point today. And a player that does that can't be MOM no matter how well he did. He cost us a point end of. As to your other point, well I think Hoillet ripped him apart against Reading but he was clearly struggling for match fitness. He did ok last week so the jury is still out for me. You know what you get with Hubby

I think it's a problem that some of our fans think that just because we've signed a PL player on loan or on a permanent deal it means that they are great, ready for the Championship and beyond criticism. That shouldn't be the case. If a player has a bad game we should say so, not make excuses for them.

Thompson made the wrong choice in trying to either win the ball, or foul the player. He should have stayed on his feet and stayed with the man. As it was, the lad a clear run on goal.

PS It was Patino who tried to get back to him. There was reference to Thompson running in treacle. It wasn't him.

yep seen it again and it was Patino. Incredibly slow. That said it was simply terrible from Thompson whatever he tried to do. Of course the bigger picture is you could question why we only had one on one at the back.

Better 2nd half, and gilt edged chances to put the game to bed, but 1st half …. Deary me…. Straight out of the Paul Ince playbook.

We need Husband in the back 4 I think. Not enough talking and decision making going on? Marv Williams Thompson and Thorniley too quiet.

Too young and passive in midfield too. Fixable.

I think it's clear that Bowler is playing for himself and wants a move. We need to brace ourselves. Still might not happen though given his inconsistency.

LOL.

We weren't excellent at all, but we were OK 2nd half and `the keeping posession of the ball obsessed Swansea' must be the worse team to chase down in the Championship, in sweltering conditions.

I dont think most of us, (sat lazily in the shade) realise how difficult the conditions were for Blackpool, to try and break up their boring tikky-takky passing style..

And even so, we still didnt deserve to lose.
We at least deserved a draw.

The sweltering weather conditions suited Swansea's style of play perfectly.
If we'd faced them outside of summer we would have been celebrating 3 points.

Patino & Thompson could be twins. Get some glasses old boy.

If I'm thinking about the same incident very late on it was actually Fiorini that blasted the ball over the bar.

First half was pretty appalling. If we’d have gone in 3-0 down at half time we could have no complaints. It was like watching a training game. Swansea had as much time as they liked to knock it about and find a pass. Fortunately the passing and finishing from Swansea wasn’t good enough to get a goal. The boos at half time were perfectly justified.

Second half was a real transformation. The high tempo and high press was incredibly effective. Thompson did brilliantly linking up with Lavery and Fiorini, Yates and Lavery were excellent pressing Swansea high up the pitch. It was noticeable in the second half that most of our attacks came down the left and Bowler wasn’t actually that heavily involved. When he was it wasn’t due to any great skill but because someone else had stolen the ball from Swansea on the break. Bowler really needs to consider signing a new contract here - he won’t play in the Premier League and he still really needs to develop his decision making skills. A move now to another club even in the Championship could destroy his career by seeing him back on the bench and playing reserve team football.

Things of note for me from the game:

Why such a slow start ? I blame the manager and tactics for the first half - it’s Appletons responsibility to ensure the players leave the dressing room with zero doubts as to the game plan and what is required from the first second to the last.

We can look very one dimensional at times when we constantly look to Bowler for our attacks. It makes us predictable and therefore very easy to defend against. It also puts a lot of pressure on arguably our most talented player and makes his life a lot harder.

Fiorini is much better suited to playing higher up the pitch than at the base of a midfield 3. Dougall brings balance to the midfield when played at CDM. Carey is yet to find his feet playing as a true CM. He’s probably better suited to playing higher up the pitch but we need someone to fill that central role - likely it will be Patino or someone we’re yet to sign as we currently look light weight in the middle.

Jerry Yates and Lavery have excellent movement. Thompson has started finding them with some great passes and Gabriel will do that too. Better decision making from Bowler and we score 2/3 goals yesterday. I’m not concerned about finding the goal but we do need the mixture of power and pace to give us more variety - a striker in the mould of Simms is a must.

Marvin looks a little unsure now he’s being asked to be the main man in defence. He’s a man mountain and top defender but maybe lacks the intelligence to compliment his brilliant physical attributes. Keogh and Marv complimented each other - Marv and Williams less so - perhaps Husband is the answer at LCB.

3 players are definitely needed, ideally 4. More if Bowler goes.

Pacey and Powerful Striker
Central Midfielder with more presence
Back Up Right Back
Another option on the wing (Rogers?)

Good post. Do you think we started slow because the players were trying to conserve energy. I think so. we didn't really attempt to close down too much in that first half and on a few occasions players didn't run for balls that they knew they weren't going to get.

That’s exactly how l saw the 1st half, let them knock the ball around to each other which is their strength and then go at them in the 2nd half and that’s what happened. We just failed to take our opportunities again!

Marv looks lost without Keough’s steadiness alongside him, and Rhys Williams isn’t a good replacement.
I thought after Marv made that superb last ditch block, his confidence, and even his passing, improved, loved him slipping round the striker late on. We sometimes forget confidence is vital for all players, not just the strikers.

One concern was the defending of corners. A team set up well for them could have a bit of a field day if we don't improve. .

Yeah, I got that wrong. Thompson still fucked up and cost us a point but seems you're ok with that. Prick.,
Thompson had a decent game and made a mistake,it happens to the best players from time to time, they make mistakes and sometimes it happens to be an expensive mistake. I will judge a player on their overall standard of play and effort put in.

By the way i am a prick of the higest order so that should save you the trouble of calling me one.

Think you need to read the various threads and exchanges before jumping in. He's a prick who delights in having a go at fans in the north and west stands.
