Thoughts on today

Thought it was a bit lacklustre, they looked dangerous 1st half and we didn't do much.

We didn't look like a team devoid of confidence nor did we look a team playing well.

Thought we were feeling our way into the game but after a while it was rather pointless passing and then losing it.

When they scored and Maxwell was running screaming I thought here we go again, that never works, it did work, got a decision with an offside player in his eyeline, he should do that every time 😀

2nd half we were the better side for me for much of it, the game changed with our subs and Poveda looked dangerous and CJ did alright and created that chance near the end we should have scored from.

Thought Patino was poor, Madine added very little, Yates anonymous, Lavery a live wire. Credit to the defence, Garbutt in from the cold, Williams did well, Hubby too, Connolly did alright. Dougall alright, Carey not the best today imo.

Positives are clean sheet, stopped the rot, the old it could be a big point.... but wish we'd done better with those great chances for Carey and Patino.

At least we didn't lose.

Think you’ve hit every nail on the head.

Another thought though: the North Stand have all decided to have their voice boxes removed, barring the few around me at the bottom of Block B.

Yeah it was pretty quiet in there today, but a sign of where we are, a team that's struggled with a manager people berated in the last game, was never going to be vociferous. A bit of collective sulking I think.

I think with two chalked off and a post hit, as well as the early one over the bar (God knows how he missed that), Birmingham will feel they had the best of it and deserved the win.

We did a lot better after the break. Carey's chance after great interplay between him and Poveda was probably the best move of the game, shame Sonny couldn't hit it clean.

Agree about the defence, to say it was almost as makeshift as we could be, they did very well. Connolly deserved mom.

Said after half an hour, would we take 0-0 now, and I would have. It was vital we got something, so that's the thing to take today - everything was quite flat, a game of few chances overall and we came out with a point

As stated, credit to the lads second half,we nullified them and I thought we put in a shift for the entire game, effort wise. Yates had a quiet game bar one or two clever little flicks and Williams overall played well, which he must gain confidence from. I thought we were gonna sneak it at the end which would of been arguably a bit unjust on Birmingham. Atmosphere wise,I think the majority are attending and expecting us to get beat before a ball is kicked,so a bit more spirit from the stands would be nice. A point looking at our predicament is not great, but at least stops the rot.

If people aren’t willing to back us in our bad times, they for sure don’t deserve to be backing us during our good times!
There were chants, just not many, the game wasn't a classic and our situation, could of course be better though.

It’s like a frog in a slow boiling pan… anyone trying to find positives - it’s a point, maybe if we sing more.
we are dreadful. Motionless manager drinking a coffee, his Sunday league side kick stood behind and all direction as limited as it is from the goal keeping coach.

Why are we persisting with this playing out from the back when we are clearly not equipped to do it? We get the ball in the area, look round then underhit a pass to the full back who, if he's lucky, gives it back. More often than not we risk losing possession 20 yards from goal, gifting possession.

Until we have the players to make it work, don't do it.

It also stops Maxwell from playing out quickly. Time and time again, he gets the ball then stops the play rather than quickly recycle the ball to midfielders who are often available in space. It's like he is under orders to slow things down. Grimshaw did the same, to be fair.

It's diametrically the opposite of what we did in the promotion season when the first thought was a quick ball to get Yates away, leading directly to a few goals.

How many have we scored from this ponderous build up? I'd bet anything we've conceded more through losing possession in our own half.

Two full teams and it had all the hallmarks of a relegation battle. The point stops the run of defeats but we had to thank them missing a sitter, the post and a marginal offside to get it.

In this division putting out a three man midfield with no muscle when most teams play four in the middle is suicide.

Dougall, Patino and Carey were starved of the ball and any control of the game and we badly need to shuffle the pack by playing Connolly in there as soon as possible.

CJ needs to start instead of Lavery.

I thought Williams had a good game today and seems to thrive better playing on the right. Good to see Beesley back.

Poor

See Coventry away:

Average first half with no support from the stands. Second half, fans get going, players got going. Many players have mentioned how the players react and bounce off the fans.
Yeah I know, its been disappointing all season since the buzz was killed with the summer.

Also a bit of chicken and egg, needs the players to get fans going sometimes too.

great o/p. Agree with all of it. Not much to add except imo playing all those three strikers rarely works. Lavery just hasn't got the quality to be a wide man. He was probably the most noticeable of the front three but that was only because of his harrying and not because of his quality on the ball.

Williams always needed a dependable partner, Eki going through his crisis of confidence made Williams luck bad.
He looked very assured today

Why Madine seems to be number one on the team sheet, I will never understand. He has been ill all week and still plays.
Is he always ill ?time excuses were stopped being made and admit the truth he is not good enough for this league .Has 1 average game in 10 and that game is usually against small sides always been the same

He isn’t good enough. Don’t know why he is picked as a lone striker. Just one of many reasons why Appleton should go.

Madine is a target man. A top one at that when fully fit 👍🏼
problem is we often dont put crosses into the box where he could be dangerous. you have to give some credit to the Yam yams centre halves for keeping Madine quiet. they were very organised defensively, which we aren't. even though the defence held out we were often at sixes and sevens. Brum could have been three goals to the good at half time. the fact that Madine was getting very little joy out of the brum defence should have told appleton we needed a different approach.

To me it looked like Block A were more interested in their ongoing yaa-boo session with the Birmingham pond-life.

I think most of the North Stand have made their mind up on Appleton and until he goes I can't see the atmosphere returning no matter what his few supporters on here think. We have inherited a good young vibrant section there and unless something changes quickly the enthusiasm and numbers will carry on dwindling.

It really is a depressing place, atmosphere a and football at the moment. For the first time ever I was even hoping the game was called off today.

There are 10 of us together in the North Stand - collectively none of us have called for Appletons head yet _ however if things stay the same come 1st February we will start the chants.😡

Too late then. We have to show drastic improvement through Christmas otherwise the same man takes us into the crucial transfer window. If no improvement we need to make a change imo.

So we play it out from the back 99.9% of the time so nullifying the target man before a ball is kicked......
Two centre forwards playing wide and defending more than attacking......

Applecart out ASAP.

That is more of a considered view than many give.

Patino was offered no protection from the referee yesterday and had 7 bells kicked out of him, most of it from their no 7.

Whenever he comes up against a big strong cb he's often 2nd best. I still rate what he can bring, but at times it can be nothing too.

We are in a relegation scrap with a midfield that is not fit for purpose, neither offensively or defensively.

Until we stop playing Dougall, Carey and Patino in midfield together we will always struggle.

The two young lads are both lightweight and too easy to knock off the ball. I haven’t seen Carey influences any game this season (except PNE). Patino has flashes of promise and undoubtedly will be an excellent footballer in the future but lacks consistency which is to be expected.

Dougall misplaces passes in areas regularly often playing the ball blindly.

It’s blatantly obvious that the midfield needs sorting urgently if we have any chance of staying in this division.

Yeah there's probably an element of that and the place is down. Last season we were hitting 9/10 for feelgood factor, passion and togetherness.

This season its a 3 at best and often 2/10 or 1/10 with lots of apathy, little excitement and lack of belief etc.

This appointment wasn't wanted but he was just winning some round, although people don't forget their initial views, then it turned, it was never a great atmosphere from the start.

The appointment people didn't want forced upon people left the place a shadow of what it was.

Now with that break and the way Appleton was chanted at, people thought he must be gone, with him still here it's never going to turn back to what it was, wins will help and if we have an amazing run, even then when we lose a few it'll be poor.

Imo we cannot afford that, we do well when all together win or lose, like last season, we need that and the club massively underestimated that feelgood factor how much it can affect things.

For some of Patinos quality he's really slow which is something that can't change, often poor in the tackle, can have days like today where he passed really poorly and is very lightweight.

He has great vision at times, but that lack of pace and strength will limit him imo.

Think that's very unfair on Patino, pace isn't his thing granted but his vision and range of passing and his calmness on the ball is what will make him a star player. I think he's generally quite tenacious in the tackle and isn't afraid to get stuck in and do the dirty work but he's not a midfield enforcer. Yesterday he had one of his poorer games, but he was being kicked all over the park by the Brum players and got no protection at all from the ref. One of the Brum players had him by his shirt collar yesterday and the ref did absolutely nothing, so they carried on kicking him for the rest of the game.

I just see weakness in his game at this level, obviously he's very young and can improve and has some real skill and talent, but not really speed or power.
