Tony Ellis

One of my favourites too, brilliant player, "Walking in an Ellis wonderland". His first season maybe he was too good but we had some cracking players the following season to join him. Quinn, Preece, Melon, Morrison erc. We really splashed the cash. The Nobbers disowned him and he wasn't bothered one bit. He got some stick when we played them twice in the cups and loved giving it back to them.

Always got the impression it was just a job to him. He wasn’t a badge kisser, he just got in with it. Didn’t mind that at all as he was bloody good at it!
Definitely. I was a teen when he was with us and he was my idol, but the love was Definitely only one way.

I knew he was leaving when he did an exaggerated wave to fans at Wrexham away on the last day of the season in response to the Ellis Wonderland chant. He'd barely even acknowledged it before.

Great player for us, but a bit of a dick in hindsight from my forties.

Remember getting the Nobbers at it outside their ground when we were down the side for singing “Thank you very much for Tony Ellis” to the theme tune of a popular tv advert at the time as we walked across the car park 👊👊😀
Good old Cadbury’s Roses!

Back to goal, drop of the shoulder, turn and curl a beauty into the top corner.

Quality player and all the sweeter for how much it pissed the Nobbers off.
This sums him up 100% . Bradford away.

Just a job for him I think and nothing wrong with that.

We were set to sign Lee Cartwright, a LW I think at the same time from them and the backlash from Ellis signing stopped it.

My hero growing up , he was one of those rare lower league players with the swagger and style of a galactico, would be interesting to hear from him, I know he was at Stoke for a while in what was then the championship but he seemed to have ability beyond the level he found himself at.

Have a signed football with all the 96' squad on it and always zero in on his signature, the tache, the hair, the plasters covering his rings, proper lower league icon.

One of my all time favourites and though I was well in to my twenties when we signed him it didn't stop me getting a top with the number 10 and God on the back.

Scored plenty of great goals, two that would spring to mind are away at Bradford in the play-offs and a last minute equaliser away at stockport earlier on in the same season.

He's no Mike Davies but he's right up there.

Thank You Very Much was a hit single for the Scaffold back in the 60s, long before the advert. It was written by Paul McCartney's brother, apparently after he thanked Paul for a present he got off him by singing thank you very much.

The trademark goal off the left and bend it into the far corner was a work of art 👌🏼

He scored a late equaliser at Stockport with the outside of his right boot and it went absolutely mental in the away end.

Unbelievable player he was at this level.

It seems crazy that we actually signed the nobbers star asset who banged goals in for fun for them.

How many times have we signed a player from them and vice versa? Can’t have happened often. Can think of Potts more recently but he’s a ** anyway.

Can you imagine if for instance Jerry signed for them during the summer?

Ellis was a different level though. A proper wow signing at the time and he didn’t disappoint.

I have a scar n my knee from that equaliser. I celebrated on one of the barriers and fell flat on my face… The euphoria of such a late goal in the 90’s was unbelievable… Even more so if at home watching the flicking teletext pages!

I think the alcohol (a strong sweet bottled drink of which I can’t remember the name) served up in The Dickens pre match travel, took away the pain. Although my mukka missed most of the game throwing up! 🤣

Gotta love growing up in the 90’s.

Wasn’t a Hooch or a Castaway was it?

The drink of the teens 🙌🏽

I’ve always said that Ellis produced one of the best bit of skills I have seen.
I was in the old east paddock leaning against the wall and Ellis was on the touch line facing our goal with one of their players immediately behind him.
The ball was played straight down the line to Ellis and when it reached him he played a delicate flick which caused the ball to pass the defender and at the same time Ellis did a 180 degree turn and just left the defender for dead.
Writing about it now doesn’t really do it justice but it really was class and had Soccer AM been about at the time then it certainly would have been shown on that “techers” feature that they used to show.

yep remember that well. We were pretty much at the gate leaving the ground when he scored. Crazy scenes.,

Completed the North West set of lower league clubs at that time - Blackpool, PNE, Burnley, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale.

Imagine how long he would have carried on playing had Morecambe & Fleetwood been knocking around the league then.

My favourite player growing up. He was way too good for League 1.

Sure I read somewhere that he still works at Stoke City. Could be wrong.

No it wasn’t, I can’t for the life of me remember what it was! Very sweet in a bottle! Me and the wife were trying to Google what it could’ve been!

Not 20/20 or White Lighting either 🤣
One of the first of those alcoh-pops I remember was - 2 Dogs alcoholic lemonade

I saw Mike Davies in Tesco on Thursday 👍

Not sure I would rate Ginge above Tony Ellis. For heart yes, for ability not in a year of Sundays.
