Total Lockdown Inevitable.

If local area was specified, it would alleviate all these issues. For me, local area includes for example Beacon Fell or Nicky Nook, possibly Parlick...but that's because these are my local hills for running on. They are all in Lancashire - but I would consider a drive to say, Darwen Tower or Rivington Pike to be too far. And certainly not the Lakes - not even the same county (or Tier most of the time). Think the "once a day" exercise rule is a bit daft. Firstly, what counts as "exercise" ( a 200m walk to the postbox and back?), and why is it a problem anyway? Just muddies the situation further.
Can't understand why the Govt can't just say "within 10 miles of your home" or similar. Then no excuses if you're caught further out and easier for the police to be seen to be treating people fairly. I think the reason this isn't specified may be that to the majority of Westminster MPs, outdoor exercise isn't really something on their daily radar?
The guidelines say stay in your own village, town or part of the city you live in.

  • outdoor exercise. This should be done locally wherever possible, but you can travel a short distance within your area to do so if necessary (for example, to access an open space)

As opposed to a proper lockdown in the Peoples’ Republic of China where everyone in Wuhan, a city of ELEVEN MILLION people, had to stay at home ALL the time, with ONE person allowed out ONCE every two weeks to buy enough food to keep their family going for the next two weeks.

And they all obeyed until virus transmission was suppressed. Then their T&T was able to cope with controlling sporadic outbreaks. Similar approaches used in other Asia/Pacific countries. Our citizens would not put up with that, complaining about infringement of liberty etc. It might be repressive but that is where real authoritarianism has its effect.
Meanwhile apparently it's essential to pop out to the newsagent for a paper every day and no one can manage more than three days without doing a big shop.

Regarding papers btw, it's going to be older folk doing that, putting an end to the theory it's all about the young as spreaders.

But what is "necessary" in terms of exercise? It isn't actually "necessary" at all in terms of staying alive - for a few months or so. I usually exercise for more than an hour a day on average in normal times. Yesterday, I cycled from my home to Fleetwood, then the length of the Prom to Starr Gate - and back home again. About 2 hours. Some people would say that isn't "necessary" - but it's probably as "necessary" to me as for some people doing a 10 minute walk. That's why the limits on distance from home should be specified as that's fairest to all (imho).
Necessary is only relevant in the context of how far you travel to exercise not the exercise itself

At what age does one begin reading newspapers I ask myself.

You’re right there Wiz, my daughter and her contemporaries all in their early40’s wouldn’t dream of buying a newspaper, why would they tbh when news is avaliable on every device they own. Used to work in newspaper distribution in the 90’s and as the advent of the internet started to impact on most aspects of life, you could see the demise of newspapers rapidly approaching. I buy The Times every Saturday but that’s it.

Do they still have page three in the sun, genuine question

With plummeting sales of papers, I reckon it's only pensioners buying them regularly.
Fortunately I currently have three fantastic pensioners who supply me in their used newspapers. I use them mainly for lighting and cleaning the wood burner, but they also come in handy for stuffing into wet boots to helop them dry.... You can't light fires or dry your footwear with a laptop 😉

On a serious note, this latest ‘lockdown’ is nowhere near as hard as last March, it’s another half hearted attempt! On a special edition of Question Time earlier, Mark Walport the SAGE medical scientist reiterated how he had warned Boris Johnson to lockdown back in September. He just hasn’t listened throughout this pandemic!
