Train passenger gets offended by train conductor

I think non binary can mean a number of things, including fluctuating between male and female.

A bit like some of the Big Jessies on here.
Surely if you are fluctuating between male and female then the conductor did indeed cover all bases. In a couple of years they will have moved onto moaning or complaining about something else. If nothing else it's certainly entertaining...

I remember when people complained because the trains were too hot. Or too cold. Or overcrowded. Or more probably late.

So I consider this as progress.

The conductor said "Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls"...correct me if im wrong, but doesn't non-binary mean both female and male ? Therefore, he was being inclusive ??? There are always going to be people like this, but what worries me is the train service's grovelling apology...worlds gone mad.
No. Non binary is neither male nor female.

Non binary is totally fine.
But what happens when the conductor has to revise his salutation to include every possible definition that the passenger subscribes to ?
Do you actually believe this deserved an apology?!

No. Its over sensitive. Good morning would suffice all round.

And therefore it warrants a discussion, not an apology.
What if the conductor has his own issues with self/esteem, irrational guilt complex etc etc and goes off and kills himself tomorrow through shame put upon him by others intolerance.
Its a 2 way street that seems to run one way at the moment.
Im not getting at you Wiz, just making a valid point I hope 👍

... and yet it does seem to divide this board along pretty much the same fault line as any ‘political’ issue would
Really? A generalisation I feel.
I don’t vote at the moment, ergo by your analysis I shouldn’t have an opinion at all 🧐
Yet guess what, I do !

What about saying "Good morning, ladies, gentlemen and others?"

Ah well, imagine how narked we'd be if we got addressed as Nobbers?

Works in any situation and isn't necessarily a comment on the activity of those you're addressing

'Alright Asda wankers' 'Alright obscure football message board wankers' for example.
We are all just wankers in our own non binary way 👍
And no need to apologise for it either 😆

I was talking about the ‘politics’ of this board. I guess you had Shandy’s comment about voting Tory in mind when you replied. Enjoy your weekend

I did so, and I will.
9 days off for me now, first full week off since last September so I am haranguing you lot in my attempt to wind down.
I’m still right though 😆
Enjoy your weekend too !

But shandy’s argument was ‘ let’s all vote Tory’ which is where my point started.
So maybe tell him that that not me

I think it was just a throwaway comment about the general trend of people railing against 'the establishment' and 'them dictating stuff' voting Tory as if somehow the Tories (the world's most successful election winning machine) are going to bring about some kind of break from the general direction of things, when in fact, the general direction of thing is probably shaped by the party that's been in power for about 70% of my life.

Mad ramble now from me where I post a load of shite that is barely related to anything on the thread and entirely unrelated to the reply...

The idea that 'the left' hold some kind of tyrannical grip on society is weird. The train this guy was conducting on was privatised years ago. The decisions to be 'woke' aren't being made by diktat of some culture minister, just as the decision to replace sky presenters with younger more diverse presenters was clearly a commercial decision.

The market dictates what policies companies take about their brand image. If they choose to be 'woke' then the only thing to blame is the market.

I dunno, I'm just bored as shit of false dichotomies over fluff obscuring things that are actually worth debating. This notion that 'left' and 'right' is somehow encapsulated in views on trans rights or something. Fuck that. Right wing extreme liberals exist. Stalinists aren't generally known for tolerance.

I could also write for ages about how gender issues are being pushed in the interests of money. Once gender is accepted as 'fluid' then you've got a huge industry able to step in and alter people. It's like cosmetic surgery plus. It's literally selling a sense of 'self' That's market forces. Create a market. Exploit people's weaknesses, their concerns, their self image... Offer solutions at a price. That's capitalism 101. It's not simply some 'lefty' shite. It's more nuanced than that

Finally...

I was once on a train where the conductor, presumably on their last day said "Ladies and Gentlemen, next stop is Wigan North Western. And if you are getting off here, good luck...."

Which seems fair enough.

I don’t think the left hold a tyrannical grip on society.
But I don’t think the right do either. even though they are the governing party.

Cracking observations td53 and brilliant closing line (as Richard Beeching would say)

"We didn't listen as it didn't apply to us".

Whatever the rights and wrongs of this story, for two employees of a train company and in a position of representing others to admit they didn't listen to an announcement, which could have been serious and affected their safety, it is they who should be castigated by their train company for potentially putting themselves and maybe others at risk through not listening to a train guard. Basic Health & Safety, which they have chosen to ignore.

Further, I believe the guard responsible has been before a disciplinary panel and asked to explain himself. His reply was Jesus, Mary & Joseph and the wee Donkey, unfortunately, he was a little hoarse at the time. 🙄

Do you say that on every Asda trip?
