Transfer rumours

Anyone heard any rumblings or reports linking us with players? Hoping that Trybull going clears up a space and some wage budget.

Obviously heard the Charlie Kirk rumour, but that has been on/off all window.

Nope. But hopefully Trybull going is a good sign - will have free’d up a lot of budget. And it means we have a space in the squad again, I think. 24 taken out of 25.

I think it will be players that we haven't heard of before, there wasn't any mention of Dembele up until we signed him. I reckon another
young winger on loan and a permanent player.

Expect last minute bids for players that don't quite happen. Yet another day of appearing to try but ending up with a couple of rejects. Zero expectations from our owner and recruitment team based on their efforts over the last 18 months.

I reckon we'll put a bid or two in to make it look like we're making an effort, they'll all be rejected and we'll end up signing Kirk. Followed by murmurings that we can still sign unattached players, and an interview with Critchley saying he's happy with the squad and we'll only sign players that'll improve us.
you must be a time traveller...........100% agree

Honestly don’t know if we’ll get anyone else. Maybe Kirk for flexibility if we switch formations? Perhaps we’ll go in one last time for Moxon? I doubt Moxon since Weir is in his mold.

A lot of people think we need 5-6 signings, but we really don’t.

In fact our Summer business has been quite good;

Norburn
Weir
Pennington
Joseph
Rhodes
Dembele

Are all top signings at this level, I think people are (fairly) freaking out because of the start and attributing that with the quality of the squad being poor when in reality it isn’t.

On paper we have a top 6 squad in the division, for whatever reason (formation, tactics, etc) they haven’t performed.

We have only paid out a significant fee for Norburn (300k) and many are pointing to that as an example of Sadler not wanting to reinvest the Yates money (which may be true), but I think it has more to do with players quality players at this level being available for the right price.

How many other League 1 clubs competing for promotion have made signings for significant fees similar to Norburn? Very few if any.

JCH is one of the only players of note I can think of who would be available and within our price range (if the rumors of him being valued at 1m are correct).

They wanted too much money for Moxon I think was the consensus. He seems to be still stalling signing a new deal at Carlisle though:

This goes with what was being said a few weeks ago, the problem isnt the money they're offering him it's the release clause. Carlisle want it to be £1m + and his agent wants it at £500k. Agent is worried that if they get religated then no one is gonna pay £1m+ for him and he will be stuck in league 2. Carlisle know that if it £500k then hes gone in January. Simmo has already said that his head has been turned though. Even with all that, doubt we get him tomorrow, best chance would be January if he still hasn't signed a contract.

Agree with this generally speaking. I think we still need a striker and a winger. I don't have a particular issue if that winger is Kirk as long as we also get a striker. Kirk on its own won't solve the problem imo but he has a decent cross/pass if not the most exciting player to watch.

I thought the valuation for JCH was 2 million?

Yeah agreed, if he hasn't signed a new deal by January with Carlisle he will be ripe for the taking cause they will want to cash in before he walks away.

Guess that buyout isn't going to be the same point of contention if he came to us either as we hopefully are pushing the other end of the table.

The only way we will go back in for Moxon is if we get a decent fee for Virtue if he goes to Wrexham. Reading between the lines it is probably some kind of release clause that Moxon/agent want inserted into the contract if either a Championship team come in for him or if Carlisle are relegated.

Agree. Great post amongst all of this negativity. Hope we're able to bring in a striker though possibly on loan.

There’s still the free market too and there will be a few players who were expecting bumper wage packages waking up this weekend to the reality of £0 per week wage and then rethinking their own value.

I agree that overall the quality of signings within this window has been ok and in normal circumstances that would have been fine and strengthened the squad adequately. However what you are patently failing to understand is that we are still playing catch up from the three awful windows prior to this one.

This has meant that despite the signings we have made we are still well short in key areas. In my opinion we still need 3-4 players in to be challenging for promotion especially as we have already given our rivals a head start.

The minimum requirements are a specialist left wing back (if he really doesn’t fancy Thompson) a big powerful mobile centre forward who can lead the line and another quality box to box midfielder. A ball playing centre half would also be on my wish list if we are sticking with 3 5 2.

The owner should not be given a free pass on the obvious lack of investment over the last three windows but given the amount he has had to put in to bring the club out of the dark days left behind by the odious twunts it is understandable. Personally I think he should have made a conscious effort to reinvest 1/3 of the money brought back in by Bowler Yates and Critchley leaving and then most reasonable fans would be content. We haven’t put anything like that back and have ditched some big wage earners on the way.

I sincerely hope Critchley can turn things around and would say judge him after 15 games. If we are still playing the negative dross without winning then it’s time to move on again which really isn’t ideal. To be honest if we were going to play 3 5 2 then we should have gone with the best that was offer at the time who was a specialist at that formation ..Chris Wilder. Hey ho for whatever reason we didn’t.

Very reasonable response.

I would still say that all money received from transfers doesn’t automatically go into a “permanent transfer” pile, where we use it exclusively for that, money goes into loans and wages too.

Last season we spent fees to bring in Lyons, Thompson, and Wright who I would say collectively cost at least £1.25m collectively. We also undoubtedly spent a lot on wages of loan players.

I think our issue the past couple windows hasn’t been Sadler’s unwillingness to invest, but rather very poor investment.

This Summer I think our business has been very very good on paper, however it’ll only be regarded as good if we kick on and do well.

It’s valid to ask questions of the investment of the squad seeing as we had a 500k bid in for Banks, lost out and didn’t use that money anywhere else.

I think the club are willing to spend what they think is reasonable for players quality players, but never over that. People said we were skint last Summer for not paying 500k for Charlie Kirk? Were we being skint or did we just not want to overpay?

I think you are right with£1.25 million for those three but we recouped most of the Wright fee from Plymouth so some of that so some should have been available for reinvestment. The day to day running of the club is an expense people forget but it would have been factored in by SS when he purchased the club. As I have said I dont expect all the money received in transfers to go back out but I dont think 1/3 of it is unreasonable. I have a feeling its going to be down to another couple of loans and we need them to be oven ready and good to play in the first 11.

It's very unfortunate that Joseph has so far not had the opportunity to show his worth. He is by far the largest investment we have made in sometime.

His value as part of the Yates deal has been somewhat lost and forgotten about but must be in the 750k-1M region if the total Yates fee as reported is accurate.

It's a significant investment with a capital S that hopefully pays dividends when he returns to fitness

Absolutely, but if his injury is long term we’ll need a replacement - otherwise our involvement will be at the other end of the division by the time he’s fit.
