Travel Insurance

Does anybody on here travel or go on holiday abroad without travel insurance?

Many years ago, a friend of ours and her husband insisted on going to Spain, despite her having end stage breast cancer. Needless to say they couldn't get travel insurance. She died in hospital there and apart from all of the emotional trauma her family experienced, they were ruined financially through all the medical expenses, and the repatriation of the body.

I've seen a couple of cases recently where people are asking for financial help to get someone home who's been taken ill or been injured while abroad.

In neither case did the people have any travel insurance.

One was as a result of a bar fight in Turkey (I ask you?); the other was someone who had a motorbike crash in Thailand.

While I have some sympathy for their plight, travel insurance is usually very reasonably priced. Maybe they could have bought some instead of spending money in a Turkish bar, or hiring a motorbike.

We always have travel insurance. I pay £16.50 for a full year. Pittance really. Cover wise insurance we’ve used them for years with no issues

The problem is that very few read the small print and go for the cheapest option.
Anyone involved in a high risk sport etc is not covered.
Motor bike, Jet Ski, Paragliding, climbing etc.
Alcohol consumption is another get out clause for insurers.

I will be amazed if anyone can get a travel insurance for £16. 50p
I pay £645 for 2 persons!
Mind you it covers World Wide and we are both old codgers!

My daughter had ovarian cancer in 2017 had overies removed and Dra said all was clear. She went travelling the world with a friend but in March 2019 was taken ill in mexico after tests fluiid on her lungs was found to be secondary cancer. She wasnnt allowed to take a schedual flight home. Luckily she had good insurance which sent an air ambulance with 2 doctors a nurse to mexico to collect her returning via canada and iceland to refuel and on arrival at manchester private ambulance staight to hodpital in manchester. I dread to think what that cost or how I would have paid for it. Saddly we lost her to that cancer 11 months later

Yes we pay £66 per month for the wife and I. Get’s costly as you get older but a necessity

Had travel insurance through the bank for over 30 years and never used it, until 8 weeks ago.
I had a heart attack during a Rhine cruise, and had to spend the last 3 days of the holiday in Koblenz cardiac unit.
the insurance company wanted me to pay for a doctor to flight back to Manchester with me. Estimated cost between £3000 to £8000. They have finally agreed that the heart attack was not a pre existing condition and have paid up.
Dealing with the insurance company was more stressful than having a heart attack.

I am covered through my bank account for some reason but am sure the wife always gets some but will check when i get home as flying to Croatia tomorrow...

A good topic for discussion 👍 Personally I don't bother with insurance when holidaying in this country although if I''m travelling abroad i always take it out so Im generally always covered. It's perhaps about risk assessment and so my view is that if you're getting on a bit age wise then travel insurance is a must. i have a horror story I could tell of a holiday I was on with friends in March which perhaps would have run into the million pound mark if there hadn't been the full travel insurance required.

We always have travelled abroad with travel insurance - got an annual policy which covers ski trips/cruises too. In Europe, always make sure have up to date GHIC (prev E111) cards. Some of the cruise companies make it mandatory. Have had to get medical treatment after skiing injuries a couple of times. Once in the state system using the E111 card (no insurance claim required), and once using a private medical practice using insurance.

Did take an elderly relative to Italy a few times several years ago. He'd had a terminal cancer diagnosis but was doing well so took a risk. Although we got him travel insurance, it didn't cover his medical conditions. Gambled on being able to use the E111 card and if the worst happened, his estate would cover the repatriation costs. As it was, we went 3 times in the space of 24 months and had no issues.

Jesus😳

As said, read some of the small print. Don't be giddy that the quote through a comparison site says £10m cover for broken toenails.

And here's the science bit...

DECLARE ALL MEDICAL CONDITIONS.

I did and got joint for £80 pa.

Just arrived mate, staying in Trogir. Going to Hadjuk game on Sunday night which should be interesting
Had an afternoon in Trogir, lovely place. Go in Diocletian's palace when you go to Split - amazing place with some great bars and restaurants.
