Unlucky today

Our performance today was a mile away from the one at West Brom. I came away gutted we didn't get anything, but we clearly didn't deserve that result, and it was a top effort by the players given the circumstances.

A few points. Firstly, we have so many absences now that if we get any more we'll be putting the youth team on the bench. It's a joke, and I honestly think injury records should be playing a greater part of our decision process when bringing in players. It should be no shock to anyone that Bridcutt and Stewart aren't available. Not signing our targets and then signing Bridcutt in a panic to cover is just a waste of money I'm afraid. It isn't sound decision making.

Secondly, whatever MA said to Corbeanu before he came on, please can he keep saying it. That was proper wing play with a purpose and we need to see more of that from him. I'd start him next game based on that.

Thirdly, Nathan Jones is a complete cock.

Overall you can only do what you can with the players available, and until we start to see more of our squad back in contention we're going to struggle. But I'm not going to blame the manager or team if we put a shift in like today. It's just a difficult situation that surely can only improve. The World Cup break is a lifeline for us this season.

It was better today but still frustrating that we seem incapable of mounting an attack until we have conceded first. There is a lack of basic passing ability and once again we are knocked off the ball too easily.

I agree about the passing, but I do think we have to accept that we haven't had a settled midfield all season long, and today had two there that were playing their first game back after very long absences. We were never going to click into gear today, but despite that we put together a determined performance that really should've got us at least a point.
That's just the situation we find ourselves, and if anything is to blame it was our inability to get deals over the line for our targets in summer. We were clearly after a midfielder and a striker, and failed in both. And now we're left wanting in midfield and we couldn't put a chance away.

Liked your post. One contention. Bridcutt is valuable to this squad even if his body isn't doing it on the pitch. Otherwise, I think you call it right.

First half today was very disappointing again , given WBA performance I expected a reaction . Second half started with goal mouth scramble with a handful of efforts getting blocked . we then went back into shell until last 5-10 mins with another almighty pin ball episode without result . All in all we didn't do nearly enough to win the game maybe a draw would've been fairer but if you dont score at home thats what can happen .

Depite all our issues, injuries etc with the players we have, we should be defending better for the 2 crosses in 2 games that have cost us. Also we can't clear balls and either tap it or give it straight back, plus concede cheap corners. Passing was all over thr place top at times, not championship quality for a lot of that game.

We should also be able to put one of those chances away, despite who's out there, guilt edged some of them, open net for Madine just needs the right tap. Scrambles needing poking in.

We're up against it but still poor in the key moments from experienced players.

Yep, the reaction was non-existent from the off which is worrying as your trying to right a wrong supposedly.

Only a few short spells 2nd half, which could have actually won us the game had we scored the many chances in them.

But far too lacklustre in between them for the rest of the game, passing was poor mostly, defending wasn't great either.

Games are won and lost in midfield. And today we had an ill 19 year old on, and two players who haven't kicked a ball in a competitive game for at least 6 months, one of which had to be subbed off. That isn't a recipe for good, free flowing passing football. We did well with what we had considering the circumstances. If anyone was expecting that midfield to be up to scratch then they need to adjust their expectations imo.
I agree with the defending for set pieces, its crucial we improve that. But again, we let Keogh go without bringing in a replacement. I just find it very difficult to blame the players or manager for the loss today tbh.

Just think with a weakened midfield and with Big Gaz up front we're one dimensional and easy to play against. Luton didn't have to try too hard to get three points today.
Going to be a tough season.

Easy to play against, and yet even being one dimensional we created enough situations to win the game. There were at least two or three occasions where I have no idea how we didn't score.
All these close games we're losing, if we improved our set pieces, both attacking and defending, they'd mostly be wins. It's frustrating that we've been so bad at them for so long, because it's something you don't really need ability to get right. You just need determination and organisation. And being good at them can give you a dozen points a season, at least.

The close games we are losing are similar to the close games we lost last year. Defence makes a mistake we concede. Last year if we went a goal behind we just wouldn't get back into the game. Over the last 8 weeks or so I'm beginning to think we can get back into games, how we didn't score today will be a mystery for a long while. Luton put up a good defensive performance but by God did they ride their luck.

The longer it went on, the more I expected an equaliser. But, luck was not on our side. A bitter pill to swallow.
For God’s sake everyone, keep behind the team!

I agree it's not ideal, but we lost the game not due to that midfield, but again weak defending from a cross.

Also we didn't pass it well at times, that may be a reason, but when we did we created plenty, but were ridiculously wasteful with those chances that just had to go in. Shots from a few yards out just have to hit the net. We can call it one of those days, but the players whilst doing their best in a difficult time, should have done better at both ends of the pitch.

Firstly, I'd say that Williams was brought in as the likely replacement for Keogh. It's hard to say what was really wrong yesterday. Certainly it was nowhere near as bad as midweek at WBA. Patino's illness clearly affected him and it showed. Also Wards rustiness too, and I thought he had a shocker and even the most basic of passes he was giving the ball away. So pretty much left to Dougall in midfield and he tried hard and to be fair his set pieces [corners] were much better than his usual standard. Jerry tried hard as per usual but our balls up to Madine were poor too, with too many times the ball being hit wide of him and he simply hasn't got the movement or pace to get there. Connolly struggled arially with the size of their wide player Adebayo and Luton clearly targetted that. Marv was his usual self, giving the ball away in dangerous areas but also doing some terrific defending.

Not sure how we didn't score in those last fifteen minutes or so and as much as Luton were putting their bodies on the line, still think we were in situations where we should have been more clinical. And yep, even though the ref was decent thought we should have had a penalty with their guys arm clearly raised above his head. Even if he wasn't looking at the ball which has been said, his arm was in an unnatural position.

All in all it left a whole load of frustration for so many different reasons.
