Very Worrying

The thing what is a bit worrying is how we can’t cope with height and physical teams.
I was trying to find a site with the average height of each team but can’t find one.
I remember Stoke went up to the Prem with a team full of 6 foot plus players playing similar to Cardiff today

I’m worried, having said that it’s early days and I’m trying to make myself feel better by thinking a loss against Cardiff & being totally outplayed may not look as bad if they turn out to be a very good team throughout the season.
Very similar game to the Bristol city one & we could have been battered in both unfortunately
I don't think Cardiff or Bristol will be up there, Brizzle at a push but Cardiff are bang average, we were just very poor.

Any points picked up in August are a bonus for us, we're nowhere near clicking as a team and we need a couple of decent players in, but to actually call it 'very worrying' like the OP has is just utter bollocks to be honest, it's August.

No chance Bristol City finish ahead of Cardiff.

I read the op opening word and nothing else.
My opinion we are carrying 3 or 4 passengers in the starting 11, those passengers might improve but maybe we need to put them on the bench for a while.
Some Blackpool fans are getting a little over excited we are in a mini league which involves the bottom 8.
If we finish 4th bottom its a good season.
The quality of football apart from Cardiff crosses was worse than last season, they were a team of organised giants who will do a job in the Championship but would be relegation fodder in the Premier league if they got promoted.
We need to play to our strengths, be realistic about what a successful season is and be able to get a beer at half time much quicker!!

Bristol looked like a bottom half side, Cardiff will do ok until they meet the better sides In this division and then they’ll get shown up. Early days though so who knows.

Cardiff were better organised today, quicker on the touch and pass and played the ref better than we did. I won’t labour the ref thing but he was bullied by Cardiff and failed to assert any authority at all. Anyway, Cardiff made the most of their size to compensate for not having much else.

We need to be half a second quicker making decisions, take a touch less and play to the speed of our front line. And a couple of today’s first 11 will not be first choice for long I suspect. We deservedly got beat by an experienced, well drilled championship side and a boring but experienced manager.

So to answer the op, today wasn’t very worrying, that is a complete knee jerk over reaction. It was a lesson learned and we have things we need to improve, but they are things that largely can be improved. If anything, if Cardiff are top half standard in this division I’m not particularly worried at all.

Not sure what Cardiff being relegation fodder in the Prem has to do with the price of fish but half-time in the concourses is worse than fecking useless.

For all those about to ask me, "Do I want to go back to the Oyston's", the answer is no but the concourses at half-time are worse than fecking useless.

To be fair though the concourses are a hangover from the Oyston era, especially the bloody West.

Nothing to do with fish but some people on here are talking about us being involved in the top 6, we won't be they will.
Our battle is in the bottom 6 this season, massive contrast to last season.
Concourses when it comes to getting a beer terrible, why were the bottle and can bars not open to separate the heavy session drinkers from the pastry munchers!!?

Expectations

They are down to each individual, some will say finishing 21st is like winning the lottery and others will aim higher, I am not going to tell anybody what they should - or shouldn't - expect.

Concourses

I couldn't agree more, I already said they were worse than fecking useless but to be honest I'm probably overrating them.

What I took most from today was the following:

Keogh and Husband is not a good enough CB pairing for this division. Marv needs to start.

Garbutt does not look comfortable defending while Connolly doesn’t want to go forward.

Kenny was off the pace.

CJ was anonymous and TJJ faded.

Keshi showed good touches but was wasteful. Ward was effective.

We never really had a grip on the game at any stage. A change of system was required I think to a back 3 with 5 in midfield to rest control.

Maxwell was excellent. Bowler and Lavery made a difference.

It’s early days but today we were outfought and outthought. Coventry should provide an opportunity to put things right but I think changes are needed.

Can't argue really with what's been said about today's performance outclàssed is a decent comment

However Critch and Sadler have shown that they can sort it and I trust them to meet the ambition this season which is to stay up

We are going to have a quite a few days like this and it's going to be a long season

I just hope everyone keeps the faith and supports the lads like we did today

The support by the fans despite the loss today was outstanding and pretty emotional tbh

Read the Boro forum after our match with them. They were saying the same thing.
3 people serving and looked like they had all used the same bottle of hair dye. Made me chuckle. But annoyingly accurate assessment.

Should of been trying to pick up your season ticket before the game. One guy handing out tickets too 100+ people. The other guy there apparently was not trained to hand out season tickets, just match day tickets. 🤣 They're volunteers like so can’t be too harsh but it was a joke.

Classic Mcarthy team, long throws flick ons, general shithousery. I don’t want us to play like that. NC will have learned a lot from that game, there won’t of been too many teams like that in the under 23s. We didn’t play well at all and too many players had poor games. But worried ? Not at all.

Not worried at all - they panned us and without Maxwell would have been 4-0 at least
The championship is stronger and has more quality since we were last playing in it
We need to give these players and manager time to develop and adapt
Confident we will stay up come the end of the season ,albeit in the bottom half

These are good times
Good shout.

We were mostly not worried at all after two or three league games last season and then mostly all very worried after 10 games last season and got up through the playoffs.

As we’ve brought the worrying forward to game two can we expect automatic 😉

We certainly need to be flexible enough to Ter our shape to suit the opposition during a match. What really frustrated me most was watching the back five continue to pass it around deep in our half in the latter stages, when we really needed to shift the ball up front quickly.

As has been said Cardiff deserved the win but Cardiff were masters of shithousery and all the physical stuff..... I think as a team they are a but soft and lightweight

Need one or two nasty experienced players who will help us gain control of the pitch

Once over teams see what Cardiff did they will do similar as pool are very predictable at the moment

All the season tickets were in one box in alphabetical order and being dealt with by one guy. All the match day tickets for home and away fans plus comps and media were being dealt with by another guy. The main issue was the number of people turning up from 14:30 expecting to be handed a ticket immediately. Fans were asked to get there early.
It would have helped to have a sign above each ticket window informing which tickets were being dispensed from each as loads were in the wrong queue.

Agree with the majority of the opening post content, but, in light of what's happening in Haiti, Afghanistan and, indeed, the UK, not worrying in the slightest.
As far as football is concerned, this Board might implode as the season progresses

I think they've got more chance long term, Cardiff are just a one dimensional Mick McCarthy team, he's not going to change it, Pearson (although quite an objectionable man) is the better manager.
Both of them are 1 dimensional. We want to follow Brentford, Bournemouth and Fulham out of this division. At present our speed and ball skills are slightly lacking.

The pressure is on as you won't get half a season to get it right at this level.

On reflection it's just as well we only conceded 2 (it could and should have been a few more) as confidence would have been well and truly shot.
A chastening experience though.

Must have seen a different game at Bristol then.
First 20 mns was equal and then they dominated up to half time getting the goal just before.
Second half they were on top for 25 mns and the last 20 we were on top and had 5 chances.
Wednesday we looked a totally different team and played great.
Yesterday was a typical McCarthy side and we struggled against the giants.
Roll on Tuesday,no need to panic.

M'boro played a second string team which didn't test Pool at all. It did, however, show that Bowler and Lavery are playing with confidence and are in form.
Critchley chose to leave them out against Cardiff...a strange decision, along with the make up of his back four.

Not really. You can't magic up space when the concourse is too narrow. Compare and contrast with the South.

Wiz

It's not something that I am going to spend an afternoon discussing in any detail but I am of the opinion that the situation at half-time is absolutely ridiculous and that it should be addressed

I am not blaming any individual for what I believe to be a problem and I fully appreciate that you might be of the opinion that there is no problem or that nothing can be done about it.

I am also aware that we gained promotion last season and I do not have any desire to see the Oystons return to the club.

I hate to say it but on this occasion you are correct.

This was NOT the manager's finest hour BUT he still has a lot of credit in the bank following on from last season. I am not going to be over critical but I think we made some fundamental selection errors yesterday and we didnt deal with their strengths at all well.

If you are going to stay loyal to players then I have no issue with that but when you have got out of jail bringing it in at 0-0 at half time you simply have to change it there and then. To wait for over an hour before changing it up was just plain wrong. I think most people would agree we could have no complaints if we were trailing 3-0 at the break and we just werent dealing with the aerial threat they posed. To leave the changes of Lavery and Bowler so late was bordering on criminal.

Personally I would have stuck with players in form such as Carey Bowler and Lavery. Playing against the land of the giants may well have suited that injection of pace and Yates and Lavery ratting after every ball and running the big guys ragged may well have given them something to think about.

I am a big fan of CJ but he is woefully out of form and looks like he is still looking after his hamstring for now....he hasnt got the same explosive pace yet but hopefully that will return. Hoiking high ball sup to him to try and win headers is not his game. That said Bowler had an immediate impact and did more in 30 secs that CJ did all game.

I thought the following applied yesterday:

Maxwell deservedly won man of the match but I am sure he will be a little disappointed with the second albeit being a decent header. His distribution isnt the greatest but he is a decent keeper at this level. If he were taller and a better distributor he wouldnt be playing for us.

Connolly did ok and may well prove the answer at centre half or even as a defensive midfielder. He seems to struggle positionally at right back and it was his man that scored their first.

Husband was found out a good few times yesterday and had a tough day at the office...I think he should be a back up as centre half or left back parsonnally and not first pick as either.

Keogh did ok but is pretty slow and may well unsettle the squad if he keeps screaming at players. He would be a good component in a back 5 but personally I would prefer Connolly in this slot.

Garbutt like the manager has credit in the bank but this was one of his poorest games in tangerine. His free kicks were woeful and the corners just dont get beyond the first defender. For a set piece specialist he really isnt shining at the direct free kicks we get. Charlie Adamesque he is not.

Dougall also has plenty of credit in the bank but again had a poor game...he did this at one point last season when he returned after covid and hopefully it is just a blip. Worrying that he is yet to sign a new deal.

Keshi did ok but just ok. I think there is a real good player in there but we are yet to see it to be fair. He needs to come and find the ball if it isnt finding him.

Ward was poor first half but improved markedly after the break and was one of the better outfield players. He isnt quite as creative as he could be yet and hopefully he can start finding a killer ball (Carey did that on a number of occasions on Wednesday)

CJ had his worst game yet in tangerine and needs a confidence builder and plenty of fitness work. I really hope he can turn it around and become a whippet again.

John Jules hasnt done it for me at all yet and needs to get involved and stop moaning about a lack of service. Yet to impress and lucky to get the nod yesterday he didnt take the chance with both hands and should be on the bench Tuesday.

Yates has been poor so far but did show one glimpse of his brilliance yesterday before slicing wide the chance he created so skilfully. One up top doesnt work so lets get him and Lavery chasing everyting and running them ragged. Personally I would have Lavery Bowler and Carey all in on Tuesday and play a team based on players in form.

Lavery and Bowler in particular both looked very dangerous when they came on and we need a substitute coach if Critch cant see when they should be made. It was obvious to most that the subs were too little too late AGAIN!!!
