Very Worrying

Outclassed all over the pitch today, could have been 4 or 5 and we couldn't complain. And if we are being honest, it was the same against Bristol last week. Man for man they were just better than us all over the park and had that bit of quality you need at this level, I just hope that isn't going to be the theme for the season. Defensively we were all over the place as well. I don't think I can remember a team getting as many crosses and and winning as many headers in our box as Cardiff did today, it was every single time.

Maxwell great as usual.
Husband and Keogh at the back is not good enough at this level and we will be straight back down with a record low points if that is the plan this season. Husband in particular played the same chipped ball down the line and out for a throw in 4/5 times, needlessly giving the ball away. Luckily we do have other options and I think in a few weeks neither will be in the starting 11.
Connolly is okay, but think we need a bit more of an attacking threat with our wingers being so poor.

Ward and Dougall okay in the middle but we are going to need a bit of something else to help create chances going forward

CJ just isn't up to this level. It may sound harsh and I know he had a good run at the start of last season, but since then I can't remember him offering anything at all. His first touch is awful 100 percent of the time. Anderson really isn't too much better. Lots of underhit/misplaced passes but at least he is trying to get involved. We signed them both from league two, and you can definately tell. The difference between League One and The Championship is massive when compared to League One Vs League Two. Can't really comment on Yates or John-Jules as they have both nothing to work with in two full matches now.

Lavery and Bowler were decent when they came on and probably have to start on Tuesday.

The Coventry game will give us a good indication of where we are at as they will be down the bottom end of the table with us. If we get outplayed and outclassed again then we may need to look at bringing in a few extra bodies in.

Also the fans were fantastic today considering the performance on the pitch.

With all due respect I disagree.
If the linesman (assistant referee for the youngsters) or the oompa lumpa painted a human colour spots the handball it’s 1-1.

I have no doubts we will learn from it in certain aspects. The thing that worries me is the general footballing ability in some of the players starting for us, especially when compared to the opposition. And unfortunately theirs no amount of coaching or learning that can change that, especially when your first touch is that bad it ends up being a pass.

Early days yet I suppose and the next few games will probably confirm whether we are under equipped or I am over reacting but I can only go off what I have seen with my own eyes in the two league games so far.

Keogh was the only one making the defence work. He also took it upon himself to drive forward in the second half. He, Ward and Bowler can hold their heads high today.

Not worrying. If we thought we were going to come up and walk it and go up straight away that would be worrying. We are gonna get games like this and we will get points were we shouldn’t get any in certain games. We weren’t good today but the ref didn’t help matters and we were still in the game with 5mins to go. Not a disaster at all in my eyes

Cardiff got lucky that’s all.

The blindingly obvious aspect of the game for me was how much we miss Dan Ballard. Cardiff's giants won every ball played into the box and the first goal was well overdue. They could have done exactly the same half a dozen times before the goal.

The next obvious thing was how ineffective our passing game is when our defenders are closed down. Man City showed how to do that and Cardiff copied it well. We look uncomfortable when the opposition closes us down.

We have a massive learning curve ahead of us and today was a real lesson. At least we won't be up against many teams as physically big as Cardiff.

Not worried at all - they panned us and without Maxwell would have been 4-0 at least
The championship is stronger and has more quality since we were last playing in it
We need to give these players and manager time to develop and adapt
Confident we will stay up come the end of the season ,albeit in the bottom half

These are good times

I agree with much of the opening post and think that many of the responses are barely relevant at best.

I thought we were outclassed all over the pitch ?

I appreciate that not everybody will agree but "we will learn", "it's a tough league", "only the second game", "they finished 8th last season", "linesman made the difference", etc, etc have got nothing to do with anything, we were outclassed all over the pitch.

If the plan was to be outclassed all over the pitch on the second game then fair enough.

I am not suggesting we sack the manager, I'm saying we were completely outplayed in todays game, not last weeks game or the next game.

I also agree with the opening post in that I thought the crowd really got behind the team when they were struggling today and that's exactly when a team needs support - they don't need backing when 4 nil up.

They got lucky because they played us.
They are not that good.
don’t even know what that means.
They batters us for 75 minutes and easily deserved all 3 points we have a lot to learn. They finished 8th last year and will finish high again because they understand how to win regardless of how ugly it is. Winning football is winning football.

Missing Ballard, Simms & Turton!
Need to start Bowler & Lavery for CJ & TJJ & get Stewart Madine & Viking back asap.
What's happened to Holmes? Injured?

If you’re very worried after today you must have had a heart attack 9 games into last season. Manager and Sadler haven’t let me down so far … I’ll be keeping the faith.
Last season felt different, It felt like results would turn in our favour based on what I could see with my own two eyes, even after just the first opening day defeat to plymouth, I could see the players had the ability to compete and be a threat at that level with a few tactical changes and a couple more bodies. I just haven't seen that in these two games and I can't bury my head in the sand and say 'we will learn' after what I have seen

Hopefully I am proved wrong, I really hope so

I think you should perhaps be giving Cardiff more credit.

We might play some better sides but I'd be surprised if many are better organised.

To be fair I might be overrating Cardiff myself as I love Mick McCarthy, or maybe I should say I appreciate his skills particularly his ability to get the best from what is available to him.

I'm thinking many will probably consider him to be a dinosaur on here.

I can’t make it any plainer.

Unfortunately I can’t.
If they finish in the top three I'll give them credit.

Anything from the first 10 games is a bonus, it’s a big step up as Cardiff showed, big strong athletic players, small things like nudging our players off balance while expecting the ball etc we were outplayed by a bigger stronger team at the end of the day, we could easily have been 3-0 down by half time

I'm not particularly worried, although I am a little bit disappointed that we didn't do enough (or anything?) to prevent the near post nod ons from our LB position. We had 6 ft 4 and a 6 ft 2 defenders on the bench.

But we're going to have a few games like this one this season, so hopefully there won't be an avftt meltdown when it happens again.

Cardiff were obviously the better side, but they were quite predictable with the ball up their right wing, win a throw in, then get the nod on across the goal. Their second was simply a goal on the break when we were (at last) pressing for an equaliser. As someone has said, they're well organised and play to their strengths. I think they'll finish in the top 8, but I don't think they're better than that.

You don't have to give Cardiff any credit if you don't want to.

I've heard plenty suggesting that the officials were the difference between the sides - but they were women, what's your excuse ? 😀

You say you'll give them credit if they finish in the top 3, I'll give them credit for their professional performance today no matter where they go on to finish.

In fact, I will say that they completely outplayed us today if they are relegated.

Some good and fair points but it's almost as if you are saying that we were outplayed by a predictable and not very good side at home.

If that is the case then it is inevitable that there will be concerns.

Maybe I have overrated Cardiff myself but they are certainly well organised and play to their strengths as you say.

Our passing out from the back is very ponderous. When you see citeh or Liverpool doing it they quickly get to within the half way line. The cross field passing happens around that area and a 15 yard pass puts the ball into dangerous areas around the penalty area or out on the wings. We are currently doing the cross field passing around our box which is what teams were doing with us last year and we punished them frequently.

That's why I expressed my disappointment at our failure to address their predictable m/o.
So yes, that's my concern as you rightly put it.
I thought they were comfortably the better side, but we're going to go through this a few times this season so I wouldn't say I was worried. We could do with a couple of quality signings, whether loans or permanent, but there's already been a lot of threads about that.

The responses are only 'barely relevant' if you view every single game in isolation, there's not a club or manager in the world that does that.

I was referring to comments made in response to the opening posters view that we were totally outplayed today and I think it's fair to say that he was considering todays game and no other game.

You are probably right in that clubs and managers do not view every single game in isolation but that's not something I considered when I am referring to comments made - and subsequent responses - on todays game.

I was just suggesting that we were completely outplayed today - not everybody will agree - and not that we were going to get relegated.

My opinion on todays game will not change regardless of where we finish in the league.

It's not very worrying though is it really?
I’m worried, having said that it’s early days and I’m trying to make myself feel better by thinking a loss against Cardiff & being totally outplayed may not look as bad if they turn out to be a very good team throughout the season.
Very similar game to the Bristol city one & we could have been battered in both unfortunately

Every point will be a huge effort to win this season and today showed we aren't going to boss games like last season. Chances will be few and far between and we'll have to be far more resolute defensively to keep us in with a shout when those rare chances come along. Think recruitment will be key and we can't risk bringing personnel in who need development...got to be ready and better than what we have. I'm not worried. Expected it to be an uphill struggle.
