Virtue

According to the football ‘rumours guru’ Nixon, Wrexham want Matty Virtue! Expect there is little truth in it given Nixon’s recent record on us but if true I would not be opposed to letting him go, getting some cash in and re-investing in an upgrade.

Conceivable.

But it’s Nixon, so don’t believe a word of it 😂

Worth noting that Wrexham have been ‘linked with’ anyone with two legs this summer yet have so far only managed to sign a defender from Huddersfield reserves

He’d be a good fit there and I expect his contract would be decent. In terms of his career it’s an important time, and I don’t see how he would feature in our best midfield. Interesting that Lincoln haven’t sought a permanent move, so L2 with Wrexham could be a great move for him.

I think Virtue can do a good job for us in League One. He may not be a starter all of the time, but he's a great box-to-box midfielder who works hard and always looks to get forward with pace. Has a decent finish on him as well.
Having Virtue in the midfield will not win you promotion - I agree he is a solid back up but not first choice. To strengthen the squad overall we need better in my view .

It'd be a terrible move for him and I can't see any player willingly moving down to L2 after a successful season in L1.

It all depends on what is offered for him and who we can replace him with, if for example
we could bring in Dennis Adeniran on a free then do it.

We have to aspire to better, he's a decent performer in L1 but if/when we achieve our stated aim and get promoted he isn't a decent performer at the higher level, he's very much like Kenny Dougall from that perspective.

Norburn and Trybull are proven at championship level and could almost certainly step up, Morgan we don't know yet, but the coaching staff clearly believe in him and his ability to improve given his age and the length of contract he's signed.

Throw Apter and Carey in to the mix and you have to say we have better (currently and potentially) than MV, if there's a chance to get £200k for him I'd snap their hand off tbh.

Dougall is proven at Championship level. Prior to last season, when our midfield didnt function whoever we put in it.

If i was Critch and an offer came I think I'd be seeing it as an opportunity to upgrade and improve the squad. And for Virtue to get regular football somewhere.

Dougall has played 88 games in the championship, scored 4 goals. Oliver Norburn has only played 36 games in the championship

and scored no goals and he is older than Dougall. I don't get the argument, Dougall isn't proven championship quality, and yet Norburn is.
He’s that proven Barnsley released him.

Dougall broke his leg, he also played in the Dutch top league for two seasons. So what is Norburn reason for playing so few games
in championship?
Right so Dougall starts ahead of Norburn then?

Let’s wait and see who makes most appearances this season.

The thing is, we are, (any team is), a couple of incidents away from crisis, unless you are Man City. Let's say Carey gets a red, (we know hes got it in him) and the next game Morgan gets injured. All of a sudden we're scrattin' around for midfielders. I'm not saying Virtue is the best midfielder we've had since ,let's say Keith Southern. but that's why this is a squad game. I'd be quite happy to see a fully fit, well motivated MV coming on for either of those at any time, in any match, even if he doesn't score an 89th minute winner.

All depends I think on where Virtue is in the pecking order. I've not seen much of him since he went out on loan to Lincoln but given the players we now have on the books in midfield, I can't see him being a regular. On that basis it would make sense to cash in. That said Critch might see things differently, and the rumour might be a load of tosh anyway of course.

We'll play two from Dougall, Norburn and Trybull as holding midfielders, we've got decent options in that position.

Virtue I'm not so sure about, he can probably play in the holding role and the attacking role without really stamping his authority on either position. Sounds like he did well at Lincoln so has earned his chance but I would be surprised if he holds down a place in the team.

I guess we'll just have to wait n' see what transpires. Because you know what they say, 'patience is a virtue ...'

The stats suggest Virtue is a patient about 50% of the time. 🤔
We can get obsessed with stats though. He put a fair shift in for Lincoln didn't he? The main thing for me is whether or not he's good enough given the other players we have in the squad in the midfield area. My view is that he's down the pecking order, but does Critch see him that way?

I'm not obsessed with stats. Happy to see how things pan out with the players we have and let Critch work out who is needed and what we need to bring in.

He did seem startled when the interviewer suggested we need strengthening up front though, on Saturday. Said yes a bit, but not massively.

That's interesting. Just goes to show that Critch might see things differently. On here though a new striker has not been far off unanimous. The missing link for me definitely, but as you say lets see how things pan out.

can only assume he perhaps sees Joseph as major player for us this season. Probably alongside Lavery. Who's the back up? Beesley and.....?

I'm sure we will sign one more striker cos we only have 3 and Beesley needs to prove he can stay fit for a reasonable length of time. Maybe Lavery too. I think NC said we need 1 or 2 more attacking players, not 3 or 4. He's also talked about using the loan market to get a couple of icing on the cake players.
