We Have Got This Wrong

We are now going backwards on CV-19.

We should not have reopened pubs without restrictions - it was obvious that after three pints (or equivalent) social distancing would be forgotten. They could have introduced a "ration" type system on units. *please note I am significantly younger than the 2nd world war era. Two months back we had toilet roll rationing, so why not apply the same, when knowing the potential consequences.

I know of people not turning into work, and not phoning in, because they went on a two day bender. They have since been sacked. The lure was too much, and I don't fancy their chances at being re-employed anytime soon. I suspect the tax payer will be paying the bill before too long.

Pubs could have reopened with a strategy in place, However, there are some people that assumed when pubs reopened that it was all over.

Reopening pubs and restaurants was allegedly good for the economy, but was not managed well ... OR EVEN AT ALL.

We have now gone backwards and there are businesses due to re-open that now cannot. These businesses are not at fault, and are therefore due to suffer as a result of the above.

Close the pubs and let the rest of the economy move on.

Pubs simply cannot social distance with pissed up people. All it does is cause problems for staff that shouldn’t be faced with such problems. Can’t wait to return to a new normal when the virus has buggered off when and IF a vaccine is found.

Are you sure the problems are coming from pubs and restaurants?
I've been out a few times and everyone is behaved and social distances.
It seems to me people in close communities are fairing worse and how do you stop that.

I saw an article saying that they were considering closing the pubs again once the schools go back. Seems they can live with about 100 deaths a day but are worried about it rising again come September.

In reality the government have to make a balance between an acceptable number of deaths and keeping the econmy running as much as is possible. It is a balancing act with the hope that a vaccine or effective treatment can be found in the medium term.

Governments have always had to make these sort of decisons as there is a limited amount that can be spent - e.g. deciding on the funding of a medicine that might save a few lives. They actually have a unit of utility in the health service planning which expresses the cost / benefit implications of any intervention. If you are a utilitarian you should hope for the most good to the most people. These are very difficult decisions to make.

It's no longer all about health of the people. The number of casualties has to be balanced against the economic survival of the state. Ultimately, people must take responsibility for their own actions. The government has acted too slowly in implementing measures, but I believe it's now got it right. If that means closing down sectors or geographical areas without notice then so be it. Time to stop all the namby pamby nursing of irresponsible morons. If people want to behave like idiots as per the Manchester photo then pubs should be closed again until they understand the consequences of their actions.

I think it's time some more responsibility is placed onto the individual. If you go out and are caught not socially distancing or not wearing a mask where needed, you are put on a database waving your rights to any NHS medical care.

The places we’ve been in were devoid of idiots & were very well segregated or outside, we’ve no desire to rush back to places where there’s a real risk due to numbers of pissed people ignoring everything they’ve been told.

Most pubs have come up with "take-away" schemes for food/drink to keep them going. For other small businesses this is not an option due to the nature of their business. Let's keep the piss heads who cannot control themselves indoors.

Aren't you embarrassed by our region for going backwards? What does that say about the NW?

Unbelievable!!!

Maybe we could adopt a shoot to kill policy on obese people too? Mandatory life sentences for hugging your granny?

As I have said before, there are quite a few people on here with very authoritarian reactions to ideas that they don't much like.

Nice idea but no one I know would refuse to treat at point of care, regardless of any list.

I think ElBurro calls it right - although the Utilitarian aspect is a tad OTT. The Government are desperate for a vaccine that works. A Govt of any colour would be. However, whilst it will knock the economy and get people frustrated, ahead of that vaccine, lockdowns might have to happen. That's not politics. That's survival.

The Health Secretary has been 'crystal clear' that the latest surge has been caused by people not socially distancing with friends and family NOT through the reopening of pubs.
