Well done FIFA

Agreed. Either it’s football or it’s a big political rally. If it’s politics then I’d expect a full boycott.

Why not wear a T-shirt when training stating that Qatar is a racist, bigoted, misogyny ruled nation? Big bold letters. No hidden or subtle message. Have convictions or just get on with football

For staying strong on this ridiculous one love armband thing

Looks like the FA have backed down and the captain won't be wearing it

Let football be the winner 🏆
Or maybe someone had a different view that you and it was a principle they believed in. Wearing rainbow armbands isn't a black and white issue. 😻

Agree with a lot of the comments - if a host you don't agree with is hosting a party, and you believe you're correct and that they have issues that don't sit right with you, then you don't attend.

Going to the party then trying to show your objections doesn't really ring true - you're still there to enjoy yourself and do well above and beyond the political and moral implications.

So these armbands were sanctioned by UEFA long ago, but FIFA - despite having been consulted about them in September - have decided at the last minute they won't allow them?
This is due to Qatari pressure.
It's just more bullshit (camelshit?).

Beer sales inside the grounds banned 2 days before the start.
Danish reporter being threatened by police while filming (not so widely reported, but an Irish journo was also stopped by police while filming).
Despite 2022 being billed as the most sustainable World Cup in history and having a state-of-the-art metro system built especially for the tournament, on Saturday the organisers advised Qataris that they should forget about public transport and travel to matches in their cars because ‘there is ample free parking in stadiums.’ So the metro system is clearly not fit for purpose.
Now this.

What a ** shambles.

What it does prove, beyond any doubt, is that there is no such thing in Qatar as 'Freedom of Speech, Thought nor Action'.
They should be banned from the next World Cup, and every subsequent one until they change their atrocious attitudes.
Not that that will bother them, they're already having their days of glory by getting this one.
I wonder how much Blatter and his cronies made out of this one??
£Millions I would guess.

You can't tell countries what to do, how to act or change their cultures

Surely you are just going against your own free speech comment by trying to force your will on others

Wanting Qatar banned is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on this site

This nonsense is going too far it really is, there was some ten bob comedian on tv this morning urging the England players to make scissor motions with their fingers when( not if )they score today as some kind of protest against Iran 🙁 it’s beyond pathetic.

The irony being that the picture of Harry Maguire on the billboards over in Qatar he's wearing the one love armband.😁

Did you say 'Freedom of Speech'?

My Grandson tells me (he's an F1 fanatic) that in countries where booze is banned, they spray each other with rose water at the end of a race. 🙁

It's just the same old tokenism we see all over social media, the first threat from FIFA and they fold like a pack of cards 😂
It was exactly the same a few weeks ago when everyone changed their facebook profiles for remembrance day but how many could be bothered to get up Sunday morning and go and show their resects?

What gets me about all this Qatar bashing is that people clearly don't realise that Qatar was a British protectorate and a member of the British empire for years, most of the 20th Century

My dad was actually over their serving in the RAF when they got their independence in the 70s

It's now being made out to be some devil Muslim state

15% of the country are Christians

I know you're fishing but it's shitty blackmail Phil, FIFA have had months to address this but instead throw out a last ditch risk of your captain missing games for wearing a ** armband.

Clear rules regarding political messages

If they allow this there would be a free for all

So why not tell them about the booking months ago as it's a new sanction?

Desperate FIFA trying to placate their pay masters.
It's not new this, political messages and gestures aren't allowed its been clear for donkeys years

If you need someone to blame try the FA and Welsh equivalent for trying it on when they clearly knew the rules

They have now backed down and look ridiculous

Just get on with the football ⚽

It was never in the rules that the player would be booked, the rules were fines for breach of kit regulations.

They've put the FA in an impossible position, right before kick off, it's cowardly pandering.

No you are correct on that however its been clear for years that political statements aren't allowed

Qatar got fined back in 2017 for wearing t shirts and I'm pretty sure England Scotland and N. Ireland also got fines for Poppy displays

Several Eastern European countries have also had sanctions recently

I'm not really arsed about the virtue signalling armbands but FIFA have fucked this up royally.

You won't need to ban Qatar. They will never qualify in their own right.

Good luck with that.
Open Doors (a widely recognised, multi-denominational charity) publish an annual list of countries where it is most difficult to practice Chistianity.
Qatar was 18th on the 2022 list....

"The level of persecution you face as a Christian in Qatar depends largely on whether you are Qatari or not. Most of the Christians in Qatar are migrant workers from other countries: these believers face pressure and discrimination, and their churches are often heavily monitored by the government, but they are freer to worship.

It’s a different story for indigenous believers. Life is much more difficult for them. A new believer is likely to face extreme pressure from their Muslim family and community, if their Christian faith is discovered. Christian women and girls are particularly vulnerable to having their freedoms severely curtailed by the Muslim families – including house arrest without access to outside communication.

Qatar doesn’t officially recognise conversion from Islam, which causes loss of status and legal difficulties concerning property and child custody. Similarly, a Christian from a Muslim background isn’t permitted to marry a non-Muslim."

Oh, and this isn't an anti-Muslim post - in Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and the UAE, Christians enjoy much more freedom - it's just another example of the oppressive regime in Qatar.
(Mind you, Saudi Arabia is worse)

Did you watch them yesterday? One of the worst teams I've ever seen.
Yeah they were shite but the standard isn't great in that part of the world hence why we have had UAE, Kuwait and Saudi qualifying for past world cups

Having the World Cup in Qatar is massive for the region and will only help in developing the sport in that region

We can't have players all going off on one wearing political messages at the time

What next McLean wearing an IRA balaclava when he plays for Ireland
The fact is that 'one love' is not a political message. Supporting any community cannot be seen as such. What will be interesting is if they take the knee as surely that is supporting another community and so will that get yellow cards dished out.
Pathetic by FIFA and to be honest I've given up interest in this whole tournament.

Yeah, well done FIFA, England fans not being allowed in the stadium because of a fuck up with their ticketing. It's embarrassing.
