Were/are there worse owners than Oyston?

Just reading about this Southend guy and what an utter bell end he sounds. Over the years there's been loads of these people who have effectively bought clubs and run them in to the grounds. Is that worse than Oyston who at least achieved Prem status and then just creamed off all the money. At least there was still a club and weirdly they even continued minimally investing in it during NAPM. So were they the worst owners ever or did we dodge a real nasty bastard bullet?

I'm sure there could possibly be worse owners than the Oystons but I'm not sure what difference it will make if they are the worst or second worst, etc, etc.

How we managed to get to the Premier League under them is one of the wonders of the world.

Peter Swann is no angel.
Scunny are now in National league North.
I am sure there were rumours that he was interested in BFC a few seasons ago.
Him and the Disley guy from Marbella!
If Swann was the mystery “local businessman with an interest in a rival club” referred to in the recent Court of Appeal judgment, then he didn’t want the club; just the stadium and the training ground. Bit of a mystery what his plan was.

Otherwise, as per the op, Martin at Southend and also Scally at Gillingham who, frankly, seems to live up to his name.

The Oystons can't have been that bad as most on this site defended their penny pinching ways for years

The pro Oyston moderating team used to remove and ban the more outspoken people who didn't trust the Oyston family

Let's not forget "the more successful the Oystons are the better it is for the football club"

Bury's owner was a piece of work

I used to work on cruises and Peter swann was onboard for 2 weeks. Chatted to him and his wife most of the evening for the full 2 weeks. Managed to get a few interesting stories/tales out of him, quizzed him about the oystons as well. They were actually a very nice couple tbf.

That was down to a certain Mr Belokon!!

Tbh i actually quite liked the oystons until we were relegated from the prem.

Everything post prem is a ** horror show for which i despise them.

But getting to the prem on pennies with players that have to take their own kit home to wash is piss funny if you ask me!

No, you've got it all wrong Phil.

He didn't support the Oyston's, he just thought that some of the criticism was ridiculous and he used to remove posts because he didn't want the posters getting in to any legal trouble.

Never liked them, but yes that we got to the Prem under them is one of the wonders of the world.

I don't know if funny is the word but I'll bet a number of owners who have actually made an effort to get the Prem but failed, will look on in amazement.

We got to the Prem in spite of them and not because of them.

It all clicked into place.

It's because of them we had the players we had, and the manager we had, and the facilities and the staff.

However much nobheads they were you can't deny they were essential to that entire period.

Anything changed in that scenario would have resulted in a different outcome.

First post on this site, but pool fan for over 30yrs - be gentle!

Watched that Amazon Prime Premier League stories short programme last night about the 10/11 PL season...seeing the smirking fool KO loitering throughout really made me feel sick to the stomach; the wasted opportunity, a focus on cost rather than value, pitting himself against fans. Depressing reminder of what could and should have been.

Would be difficult to imagine anyone worse than the Oystons. Owen - a convicted sex offender who then puts the Club on the brink by removing £31 million. Karl - a complete waste of space, who sues the Club's fans and has zero respect for anyone. One thing I would add though is that Owen did keep the Club afloat years and years ago, when it seemed on more than one occasion that the Club may not survive. An interesting question though. How do Wigan's previous owners rate against the Oystons?

Karl wouldn’t even risk buying Adam at a bargain price who played brilliant for us on loan the previous season.
We would never have made the Prem without Belekon investment.
Without his cash initially we would be flirting between League 1 and 2

Right. And without the oystons being nobheads we would have never needed belekon so things would have turned out differently?

Yes, but not for the reasons a fan would.

As a business associate of the Odious Owner once told me, "Owen isn't interested in football".

He must have thought it was his luckiest of lucky days when he bought the club - all that lovely land and property - for £1.

All for a £1 not realising that the land could not be sold!
Asda were desperate to move into Blackpool at the time.

It's an interesting one with the O's because I don't think they ever set out to ruin the club but greed and power took over. Could have been so different but their belief they owned the club and all of it's rewards were far too great.
Are they the worst? No? Because I do believe there are a number of owners mentioned above who did buy clubs (like the old Wrexham owner) just to cash in on the land and to Hell with the club.
