West Brom v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 14.04.22

Beesley, Kirk & Dale in January were the oddest of signings. Possibly the most pointless. None of them fill you with any sense of excitement that they are here. Really, what was the point of signing them? they'e played about 4 games between them in the last 3 and a half months.
Agree. Kirk started to demonstrate to our wingers how to cross a ball with some degree of accuracy, but was then dropped.

Scrafton saying that Bruce thought it was debatable if they deserved to win the game, which in my opinion is about right

We could not cross the ball
Kirk is probably the best crosser of the ball at the club, so do not understand why he did not play

Was Kirk injured?

For me he’s a good addition, not a flair player but carries a threat and does his defensive work well, and strikes a nice ball. A player we need to see more of.

If he wasn’t injured, why was he not in the squad.

I don’t understand it either, he’s a loan player so utilise him while he’s here. We also have an option to buy, so let’s see what he can do with a run in the team before we commit.

I should demur from that opinion given that the idea is supposed to be for Critchley to take on potential talent and polish it with coaching. However, in Dale's case this doesn't seem to have happened. I'm also tempted to say that Critchley's work with Bowler is only a 7/10.
7/10 is good then? I'm not sure you can coach players like Bowler. He has one major attribute.. his dribbling skills. The only thing you could improve is finishing and crossing but from what Ive seen he doesn't play with his head up. If he did then you'd have a EPL player.

And that's what they should be coaching him. He isn't without these skills. I've seen him make deft layoffs for someone to put in excellent crossed but as for his crosses....aaargh!

I’m not sure what’s going on with Bowler TBH, it appears to me that he lacks footballing intelligence above all else…. I think he kind of just puts one foot in front of the other, makes it up in the instant and has no real thought for where he’s going or why…..

Sometimes he catches a break and things just go for him and during his recent 5 or 6 game purple patch he just seemed to be able to do nothing wrong…. Next minute he’s back to the same (zero end product) player who makes bad decisions. It’s hard to believe it’s the same player, which suggests to me that his run of form might have had more to do with luck than good judgement.

It appears to me that his delivery and shots are often so poor, because he simply finds himself in a position with the ball, has no idea quite how he arrived there, then suddenly he had to make a decision…. So 9 times out of 10 he’s caught in two or three minds about what to do and just fluffs his lines.

The bottom line is we are a very frustrating team to support. Don't get me wrong we've done a fantastic job to be safe with games to spare, but thank Christ we got points under our belt early on, because let's not be fooled, we would be in big trouble otherwise.
There are loads of things to address before the new season starts, not least who we keep and who we don't, who is likely to attract interest and who isn't.
Big decisions on Bowler, Yates, Maxwell and Marv, who I can see attracting quite a bit of interest.

We will need to be far better next season to stay in The Championship, let alone looking at further progress, we need to wise up, learn how to win ugly and beyond all that, learn how to close games out and STOP CONCEDING INJURY TIME GOALS!

I suppose it show how far we've come the fact that I am totally pissed off, again! That we haven't taken anything from a team with parachute payments, a bigger budget and far loftier ambitions than we had. But I am still seriously pissed off.

It's esrly doors for him, but if he's not up to the job, then you'd have to question who exactly is wasting SS's money.
Thommo and Chizzy on Radio Blackburn picked up on the fact that Dale was out of position every single time we got the ball going forward. Scanning the players you genuinely couldn't see where he was? Completely clueless or disinterested I can't decide? 🤷

Somewhat harsh - although I largely agree. It's where the coaching comes in - or doesn't.

Just back, had a great day upstairs at The Hawthorns. Their fans were great other than one knob, who thought waving in our faces after the winner was a good idea. To be fair though several of their fans approached us in the lounge to apologise.
The game, first half we had so many great opportunities only for the final ball to let us down. The only decent ball they put in the box they scored from.
Second half thought we were the better side, although there were few opportunities for either side. Robinson for them was booed by the home fans second half and cheered when he was replaced....£40,000 a week we were told and that's what we are competing against.
Back four I thought were excellent, my man of the match was Dougall, everything we did went through him.
Bowler looks like a man on his way who doesn't want to get injured. Madine couldn't hold the ball up, jumping would be a good starting point for him.
All in all good day out, shit way to lose and ready for the season to end.
We need a good summer in the transfer market and a good few "squad " players need moving on.

Why not play Kirk he did well playing against Blackburn last weekend. Why no Yates? Why no Reece James or Garbutt both fit ? We will probably see some of these on Monday. I think critch is just squad rotating now till the end of the season. Wait and see who he plays on Monday I guess

This January transfer window was the worst one since the Prem season. Quite a few similarities as well, in so far as everyone knew what was required, but what followed was very odd signings. Some not used. Some actually made us worse. Must do better.
Hope Bowler is sold early for good money. We really don’t need that disrupting our preparations. Use the cash to strengthen where it’s needed, get them in early so they can participate in pre season and actually sign proven quality this time.

They are professionals. They are duty bound to play well. When you pay for a theatre seat it's no good the leading man saying, "I can't be arsed tonight."
That’s a silly analogy. The actor always has something’ to play for. The professional footballer sometimes doesn’t. The point is, our team put in plenty of effort and tried to win the game. They didn’t deserve to lose but they did.

.....or told to tuck inside???????

Well you qualified it for me by acknowledging we played well. We miss the cutting edge to finish teams off but at this stage of our development I can accept that.
Easy tiger, you're almost sounding slightly positive about our fantastic first season back in the Championship..... Anyone listening to you might get the false impression that we're not the shittest Team in the entire Football League and doomed to certain relegation, when we sign all the crap players that we are interested in next season.

Are you on some kind of happy pills?

Maxwell’s inability to dominate his box is a big issue … look at his positioning on their second goal 😮

Not sure your second paragraph is a fair reflection . I don't think we have thrown away that many points when we've been in front and we have certainly won our fair share or points coming from behind . Seven 1 0 wins suggest we generally can see games out. Have there really been that many injury time goals conceded ( 4 apparently , we have scored 3) ? You have to show both sides of the equation .

In fairness, I’m probably still pissed

We create soooo many chances but don't have a player to finish. Showing my age I remember Gerry Ingram who got lots of goals and of course the way DJ Campbell could finish(like at Forest in play-off semi) if we could only get someone like them to finish the good build up play.

How about playing for their wages and integrity?

Which they clearly did.
You said sometimes professional footballers have nothing to play for... which is why I wrote wages and integrity... if you suggest they played well, with integrity and earnt their wages, then why suggest that they sometimes have nothing to play for as if that's alright?

Because sometimes players with nothing to play for don’t play with integrity and earn their wages.

Come on I’m waiting ????

Come on defend your comments 🙁
When I made those comments they were totally viable and I explained why. I have also said on a couple of other threads that I thought both players should get the last 5 matches to show what they can do, well, they both got a start today and both did brilliantly, let's see them in the next 4 games and see how they get on. It was great to see both of them do well and I hope they continue, but don't let a 6-1 drubbing of a very very poor Birmingham side fool you into thinking that we don't need to get rid of some players and strengthen, it would be folly to think we will now go up as champions next season based on todays game.
