On a serious note, whatever the word for it, we have become much more ‘sensitive’ and easily offended.
At the same time we are much less tolerant. This is primarily emanating from our universities which ironically used to be a ‘safe-space’ for open debate. Alas this is no longer the case.
Free speech has been continuously eroded, and replaced with a cancel culture. So now the only real free speech you’ll hear is from those too old and/or too rich to care about the consequences. Sharon Davies for example has seen the consequences of speaking her mind on the topic of transgender athletes in women’s sports. She’s been dropped by various sponsors and has lost several media contracts merely because her opinion has caused unease amongst the trans community. This is quite a good example actually because trans is a hot topic for society to grapple with and address. There’s so much inconsistency in how practicalities are handled in institutions and sport etc. There’s safety concerns. There’s the rights of the trans folk who we don’t want to discriminate against. But we will be hindered in finding a way through any issues, due to the debate being stifled and shut down. Anyone who dares speak out, faces potential career suicide. Even when they’re trying to protect women’s rights which were so hard fought for but unfortunately are no longer flavour of the month.
John McEnroe is a good example of someone too rich and too hard faced to care much about consequences. He spoke common sense when asked how Serena Williams would do in the men’s game. He give his informed opinion that she would not be very successful. Men are stronger and have other biological advantages. But no- this was unacceptable to the woke brigade and they came after him because some viewers were ‘offended’. Unfortunately we’ve reached a state of hyper sensitivity. The effects are this are compounded because our authorities and others in power now completely overreact and side with the offended regardless of what the so called ‘offender’ has said. If someone is offended because of a home truth about a female tennis player’s ability to compete on the men’s game, then in my opinion they’re over sensitive. We shouldn’t react by trying to cancel someone. (We should instead not be afraid to make the completely rational case for segregated sports based on gender. Men and women compete separately for good reason eg men have a huge advantage over women due to biological reasons.) But we do. So it becomes open season and we reach the ridiculous position where the police authorities are literally processing complaints about something (often mildly controversial) someone has written on Twitter etc.
Then we have a police authority that will knock on doors issuing warning etc etc just for someone speaking freely. Meanwhile real crime goes unaddressed and peadophiles are free to ply their sick trade for example. And don’t tell me they’re not. There’s so much peadophile activity online and elsewhere. There’s huge amounts of online fraud too. But we waste resource logging complaints from the woke. Most of these amount to nothing significant and end up with no action or no further action. Yet they have to be logged and processed. It’s nonsense. You should be contacting the police if someone has robbed you or assaulted you or threatened to kill you - but not because they’ve given an opinion trans women in female toilets.
It will only get worse because we have had a generation or two of kids who don’t lose at sports day. Everyone’s a winner. We don’t want to upset anyone. Then they progress through education and get indoctrinated by socialist university lecturers or weirdos on tiktok. There’s this recent trend to identify as something unique and to be addressed by special pronouns. They’re offended if you don’t use their chosen pronouns. How terrible of you if you see someone who looks female and call them miss. This should be reported and logged and you should hang your head in shame and cancel yourself.
For me it’s simple. We need to get back to free speech. Free speech within the constraints of the law. We can’t be doing hate speech and racist speech etc. But we should remember that it’s not illegal to offend by being rude or merely giving an opinion. There is and should be a completely clear gulf between the two so we don’t have to be involving the police in tittle tattle and silly online squabbles.
If we get back to a culture of free speech we will once again develop a slighter thicker skin and benefit from open debate where all sides can appreciate each other’s views and evolve form there.
I’m convinced there’s a link between wokeness and mental health. We have raised a generation who don’t have the interpersonal toolkit or resilience to function in adult life without being offended daily. We’ve failed the university graduates and we’ve set them up for miserable existences where they struggle to come to terms with the fact that there’s more than just their opinion - more than one version of the truth - more than just their feelings to consider.
Turning this around will take years - but in the immediate term I’m just hoping this post survives and I don’t get a knock on the door from PC (politically correct) PLOD.
