When pubs had vaults

Nice topic this. Made me realise; I can't think of a single place in my local vicinity that has a vaults or snug. Are they now defunct?

And also people are using the word 'defunct' less and less. If there a term for a word that describes it's own situation....?

St Annes Hotel in StAnnes Square had two vaults bars, first-class and second-class with an off-sales section in the centre. The Belle Vue had a vaults bar and the Carlton Hotel on North Prom had a vaults bar. I once had to deal with a guy in there who had hit someone with a soda syphon. What a mess.

Some of the finest were in PLF of course, the tap room in the Thatch, vaults in Golden Ball and even the Bull/Barn was originally the Vaults of the other - but can't remember which way round! Mount of course was legendary even if I only ever dared go in during the day time. Veevers vaults was a weird place but the Bay Horse was a cracker and it was a penny a pint cheaper of course (when I first went in it was 16p a pint!)

Gardeners arms vaults for me, played darts for them too, friday nights away to fleetwood pubs were pretty harrowing in the late 70's early 80's.

The Highcross.

When I worked there in 78, there was a Vaults, Lounge and Cocktail Lounge, all with different prices.

The Royal Oak Poulton. I used to go in with my late Father after work occasionally. Happy Days pubs are much different today and not always for the better.

Another for the Mount Vaults here. We had a barman who worked in there for years, ‘big Mick’. A guy walked in one night and asked for a larger and lime - “does it look like a cocktail bar? If you don’t want bitter f#ck off to the front” came the answer.
A warm and friendly welcome to everyone.

PLF vaults were where I grew up, Bull, Queens, Golden and Castle. Occasionally the Falcon vault was visited.

Shame they became so unfashionable

Mount vault has already had a mention (with good old Mary behind the bar - no messing around there), then into the Bay Window chippy. Then the Broadway vault was good for a game of snooker. Cleveleys hotel had a vault but really it was just the pub side of the club

Beer was always a few pence cheaper in the vaults side of a pub - being honest, vaults were always rough as hell. Good Fun though, no carpet, spitoons , dart board and dominoes.

Happy days

There is still a great vaults in the Victoria Hotel in Cleveleys and I started off in the Regal bar vaults further down. Do we count the downstairs at the Mariners?
