Who should be in, who should be out

As for Kirk. I watched him on Saturday vs Derby and he didn't go for the 50/50s or chase a free ball. He needs to bring more to his game if he's going to be worth a place.
Yep, I noticed Kirk far more than Hamilton with regards to shirking. He's still an enigma for me because against Brum thought he was excellent and my motm.

Interesting you say that as I saw Holmes play for Chorley a few months ago and whilst not looking bad he certainly didn’t stand out at that level of football.

Like you say it’s hard.

I thought Nathan Shaw was brilliant when I saw him play and could have made the step up. But he’s struggled to do anything with Fylde.
I think that Shaw could of been a missing link this year on the left hand side where we have been struggling for a left footer who can deliver in decent balls. Don't know why we got rid of him as he seemed to fit the bill.

Stewart is a quality footballer but he picks up too many injuries. We could be on a good run which then crumbles because of his absence. For me, a big reason for our lack of consistency over the last two seasons has been the high number of casualties we've carried.

I noticed exactly the same with kirk who came across as very lightweight and not chasing and harrasing the defence. For someone who is supposed to be chasing a contract I thought he would be working his socks off. After all there is more than just being able to take set pieces.

The Derby game is best forgotten. Kirk was one of the better players I think, but agree that no-one played well. Kirk is worth a punt I think at the right price (probably less than the £500K quoted), and Stewart is worth staying with if he's still under contract. He is a risk though and maybe just offer him a 1+1 deal if he's out of contract. Has he been unlucky or is he just injury prone? Jury's still out for me as it is with a number of players. He is quality though when he's playing.

A lot to agree with there. A few changes I’d make.

GK. undoubtably Grimmy and Maxi battle it out next year with Grimmy being established as no. 1. Moore’s gone. See if Monks can play here or there in a cup game maybe.

Def. Think Keoghs retiring. I’d switch out Thorniley to a starting role over Casey talent wise. However Critch just doesn’t fancy JT. He was Graysons man and Casey’s Critch’s man. So for that reason you’re right Casey will be starting. Thorniley to leave. Tharme will be 23 by the time season starts and needs to stay and try to learn from Marv and Casey.
Full backs is a really tough one. Gabriel is brilliant. Needs an understudy. Garbutt and James are miles off it for me and need moving on. Husbands ok for next year as a starter but we need to be finding the Left Backs versions on Jordan Gabriel pronto.

Mid. Bowlers, Robson, Ward will all be gone for a variety of reasons.
Personally I’d purchase Kirk if we can get him for 500ish K. CJ isn’t up to week in week out Championship standard and should be let go. I think Dale, Stewart, Dougall, Connolly, Carey, Virtue are all fine to start at this level.
Keshi - controversial one but I believe we should release him now. Partly due to the juncture we re at with his contract. Don’t activate the years option. Let him go and get a decent last contract some where and we invest that in the central creative type we’re crying out for. Would like to see Apter go on loan in the league. Antwi’s up this year isn’t he. Will leave.

Forwards. Madine’s fine at this level for what he does. Beesley and Lavery are either going to go one Way or the other this season. Who knows. Seem to have done enough to get games next year.
Yates. Again controversial, but I don’t think he’s going to make it at this level. Would love to be wrong but think we need to cash in and re invest in proven championship goals.
Think Bange’s contracts up as well. Will be released. Think we need to see Homles at League level next year on loan somewhere.
Read the paper Keogh not retiring, some absolute bollox on here.

My goodness, he in non league for a bloody reason and you think he is the answer in the Championship, right will get my hat, night all.

Now that the season is virtually at an end I've consolidated my views on our first team squad into a list of who should stay and who should go. I haven't written a supporting piece for each player as the post would be way too long. So, simply put, I've identified each player as being definitely a 1st team choice, a squad member, Let go or loaned out. Note: those identified as 1st team aren't meant to add up to eleven just that they would be in my first trawl to be in the team.
Of course, it's my opinion and mine alone. Be good to see what posters think.

Keep Kirk & yates - squad but apart from that I agree, if we could get the fee for Yates that was mentioned at the end of the season last year I’d let him go,he’ll probably be off anyway & I think Critch will see enough potential in Kirk to keep him

Kenny Dougall, squad? King Kenny has been one of our most consistent players since he arrived last season…

Not so much a criticism of Kenny - OK, a bit regarding his passing - more a case of trying to find a defensive midfielder to run the show out through to forward midfield: a Hansen or Madeley....God I'm getting old, what a choice I've come up with. How about Roy Keane or Patrick Vieira?

A lot of mine are squad, and that's an issue in itself. If we want to progress, we need more quality with the squad players helping when needed. Our midfield was overrun at times this season and we need a rethink there

Every striker is a squad player until we know how we'll play and who is creating. With Bowler leaving we don't know if we'll utilise wingers or play through the middle more.

One of the (many) reasons I am utterly unsuited to being a football manager or a business owner, is that I am not ruthless enough in this situation.

There isn't anyone in our squad that I wouldn't trust to do some sort of job for us.

Likewise, there isn't anyone in our squad who I would be desperately sad to see go.

We feel like a team without superstars or duds at present.

Think you have to be ruthless. Stewart is a great player, but is injured most of the time. In harsh reality if he's on 3k a week for 50 games (is always the hope) and only plays 25 he cost 4.5k in game time, lower game numbers and his real cost rises further. He's barely played 25 in 2 seasons, what does he cost per game? A ridiculous amount.

Max will be on good money, Moore less. Do you need a keeper on good money as a No 2 with emergency loans available etc. imho, no.

Losing those 2 probably frees up a wage for a very good player. If you're going to climb th e table you have to take the easy finance option that losing those 2 would free up.

Oh I completely agree, I'm just saying personality wise, I would be crap at it.

Agree but with reservations. Part of Critchley's job is to bond a group of men into a unit that cares for each other. If it were just about the bottom line I think we would fail.

When you generate that spirit, it needs to achieve before the spirit vanishes or for the spirit to be created. Keeping some of the players mooted might be good for the spirit, and results in the short term, but it's not sustainable.

Besides, team spirit isn't just for paupers because as you say NC's job is to integrate them and get them bonding.

I know Holmes family very well Chorley didn’t play Brad for 6 weeks before he even got a chance he then only got the odd 3 minutes of the bench Blackpool tried to recall him several times as he wasn’t getting any game time they then pulled their socks up and played him properly he scored and got player of the month from in March so don’t think you can really fairy judge when the kids thrown on for the last 10 mins of a game at the most in 6 months the boy only played around 6 games so there is the answer as to why his goals dried up Blackpool have stated they didn’t want him staying at Chorley because they did nothing for his development in fact it made him less confident and not match fit however when he did play the fans of Chorley stated how excellent he was and how unfair it was the gaffer not playing him but the gaffer himself said he had to look after his own long standing players first and because Bradley wanted to go back home to Blackpool he was treat dreadfully he still kept going trying never spitting his dummy out still training with Blackpool but unfortunately match time was what he needed and at Chorley he didn’t get that so I really think it’s unfair to judge of the one game you saw few months ago when he was prob coming on at 82/87 mins if lucky nobody could do anything in that short time he did very well when he got the chance and getting player of the month shows that people judging when they don’t see or hear anything is not fair the reason he’s not scored goals is because he’s not been played !!!!

Firstly, use paragraphs, much easier to read.

Secondly, I wasn’t having a pop at Holmes, it looks like he’s a very talented boy and I’m genuinely excited to have a local lad coming through with us! I want him to succeed and get into the first team.

A few posts up from the one you replied to I mentioned I wanted him, next year, to go out on loan somewhere at league level to help him kick on.

He played a large chunk of the game and scored when I watched him play, again it was no criticism, however I was worried that after scoring every week at Northern Prem level he didn’t stand out as being head and shoulders above the level of Nat League North which I thought was a bit worrying.

I’d wondered if what you’ve described had in fact happened with him as he seems talented enough to play at somewhere like National League or League Two level. It’s a shame that his last 6 months have been a bit of a waste and the club really need to look at that in the future with the young lads and know where the young lads are going to get game time and where they won’t.

Any news on what Holmes is doing next year? A full season out on loan at one club would probably doing him the world of good.

Oh getting a bit bitchy now 😳 yes you did how did he play a big chunk the most he’s played for them is about 20 mins . So how would he stand out especially against 30 odd year olds not getting game time destroyed evry chance of him getting used to the way Chorley played so I’m pretty sure anybody in that position wouldn’t stand out if we’re fair about that judgement then getting player of the month in March proving himself obv showed he did stand out when he got the chance so maybe don’t judge of one game

It was also mentioned about bange and apter being ahead of Holmes and you mention Holmes doesn’t stand out when playing against brig Holmes looked leaps ahead of them they stood no chance didn’t touch the ball . Luckily for them they have gone to a club on loan that’s took good care of their development and have actually played them every game Holmes spent more time on the bench than the paint work due to the manager spitting his dummy out when Blackpool wanted him back due to him training so well as he trains daily with the first team

Jesus you’ve taken this completely the wrong way. I’m not sure if you’re a family member maybe but if you re read everything I haven’t once criticised him. I wouldn’t at this stage of his career nor could I, as I’ve only seen him play a handful of times.

He’s a very bright prospect, I want him to go on and be a success for us.

Do you know what the plans are for him next year?

Barmy only joined AVFTT earlier today and these are his only posts. Clearly he has an agenda on this subject. Not that's there's anything wrong with that. There's nowt wrong with your comments, just an over reaction from Barmy.

I saw him against Hereford where he played, if I’m not mistaken 90 minutes. Scored a great curling goal.

Tbh I don’t think I know as much about the lad as you do, and haven’t followed him week in week out. So was unaware of his actual game time. So if he was getting binned by Chorley that’s disappointing. I wonder why the club let that happen? Probably out of their hands after they sent him on loan.

Anyway, wasn’t having a pop, actually said he’s always impressed me when I’ve seen him. Desperate for him to make it in our first team. Can you give us any info on what’s happening with him next year? A loan somewhere?

Not a family member but I know the family I’m unsure what the plans are I know the lad is just wanting to play football and is hoping he goes somewhere that’s going to be good for his development apose to just using him to fill in for injuries or testing players which unfortunately has happend with Chorley I hope for Future players this doesn’t happen as they are there to learn and develop and sitting in the bench for 6 months doesn’t do anything

It’s a shame these loans seem to get lost in regards to development as it looks like there is no middle man checking these kids are not just being used for clubs purpose last year Holmes was on 26 goals and that was only until jan then he got pulled up to first team where he was just benched never really played a full game since then as he was moved with first team permanently I think this is where a lot of these lads get lost as there game time just disappears unfortunately then the times comes for going on loan and there is nobody To ensure that they are played I know from brads family Blackpool tried get him back for few games including last game but Chorley stated they would play him for their remaining games so it didn’t happen . Not all loan clubs are the same United of Manchester seem to be good with these kids I know Iv noticed Brad got goal of the season there and was scoring on a regular basis as he was actually played. Personally I would of liked to have seen how many goals Holmes would of scored last season if he’d of stayed in the academy with it being 26 in jan good few months there missed

I understand the sentiment and that sounds a bit shoddy at our end really. Find it hard to believe with all the improvements recently and our emphasis on developing youth to augment and promote to the first team we don’t have a staff member or members dedicated to sorting out the loan players.

Were Brad and his family annoyed with us? Or more with Chorley.

I believe it was frustrating from both ends so I’m told . It appears they don’t seem to keep track of these youths development once they are gone ensuring they are getting the development they need this is how they seem to get lost so quickly I know there is a difference with academy football and men’s but Holmes held his own at Manchester and ran rings round the opposition bagging goal of the season purely because he got the game time he needed there needs to be a system where they employ someone that chases up on these clubs maybe weekly development checks I know Holmes didn’t get a game till mid jan and he was there in December and I’m sure then he only got minutes his first start was feb that’s a long time considering these boys are used to playing week in week out and I assume the training will be of similar standard maybe a couple of sessions a week who knows but it certainly could do with looking at if they want them to come through as there is no point them going on loan if they are not getting what they have gone for
