Why are children given stupid names

Names seen to become popular at one stage. Like Jack. I considered calling one of my Daughter's, Mariah. 2 reasons why, Only know 1. And that 1 I am a fan of. Wasn't allowed to go through with it though.

And while we are at it, why are Opal Fruits now Starburst and a Marathon bar is now a Snickers.
ps: why have Wagon Wheels reduced dramatically in size and why doesn't Ginger Beer set your mouth ablaze anymore.
I wasn't really with the vibe of this thread until the latter point.

My Grandson ( little boy in my picture) is called Cree…it took us a while to get used to it but now we wouldn’t have any other name…
The River Cree is in Scotland and also the Cree Nation (North American) natives….but I think they just liked the name.
I know Creetown quite well. Some of the Wickerman was filmed there. It also has a museum of gem rocks. It's also a bit weird, hence my sister called it Creepytown when she was wee. The river itself is lovely.

Which is probably of no interest but hey!

When we were up in Scotland last we stopped and took a picture of Cree with the river Cree sign above his head 😀

To answer the posters question…..My name is ‘Sue’! How do you do!
Johnny Cash ,in the famous song, concluded he was given a girls name as a means to toughen him up!

My grandad was Ernest which I think is a superb name in itself but my great grandparents went legendary (literally) by giving him the middle name of Lancelot. I swore if I ever did the family thing and had a son Lancelot was absolutely going on the shortlist.

My late Father was another Ernest ( Ernie)

I work at the Vic and these are genuine names, as appear on birth certificates, La-a & Ca-a, that's Ladasha & Cadasha for those who don't do dingbats!

In Germany, certain rules have to be observed when choosing the first name of your baby:

  • It must be possible to determine the gender of the child by its first name. If a neutral name is chosen, a second, gender-specific name has to be added. Boys names may be selected for boys only and girls names for girls, respectively. The only exception is the female name “Maria”, which may also be used as a second name for boys.
  • In order to protect the child, the name must not be absurd or degrading in any way.
  • Surnames, product names or names of objects are not permitted as first names in Germany.

Whether a name is acceptable or not is the decision of the registry office in the place of birth of the child. If you want to give your child an unusual German name, you should consult the competent registry office prior to the birth in order to find out whether the name will be accepted without any problems.

Adolf? That's a nice traditional German gender specific name 😂

My late father was Ian Robert Farquhar Tur......

I was supposed to be Limechase Farquhar Tur...... But my mother {may she rest in hell} stopped it...

That was the only nice thing the bitch did for me,

May she rest in eternal damnation

Blimey, sounds terrible mate.

Christening is not offensive its just not relevant if you are not religious, Kaiden is an old celtic name whats wrong with it. Same with Nova has its origins in Latin, but is also common in some of the non russian soviet states
Sound like a pair of Vauxhalls to me.
Vauxhall Nova (obviously) and a Vauxhall Kaiden.....a sort of medium sized SUV. 😂

Anyone having triplets should be congratulated. No wonder the 3rd was called Heaven forbid.

I think the aim of calling it a 'naming ceremony' rather than a Christening is so to allow a child to choose a religion/secular choice of their own once Fraser competent.

We should never judge others through the lens of personal prejudices. How many Albert, George or Charles are there now? Save for the dysfunctional sovereignty?

On Saturday at full-time when we have beaten Fulham, will you judge me when I tell you my child's name? Probably not as it would be as relevant as the start of your thread.

3 pointson Sat sets us on the way
My son who is 21 is called
George Patrick.....good solid British name that suits him...

My wife used to work with a man called
William Frederick Woolfgang Etienne....then his surname.
I never met him but like his great name, he was a great man..

True story: My workmate was Christened Michael Alfred Hunt - always known as Micky. At one place of work we attended, he was introduced at Mr Hunt and a chirpy lady piped up "it's a good job you weren't named Mike" .... red faces all round!
I like unusual names, but never really understand when a son is given the same name as his dad - that must be confusing at times.

If it's in a Church and/or carried out by a Priest/ Vicar/ Preacher or whatever you wish to call them, it's a Christening, and it's offensive not to call it that.
The Anglican Church have a Thanksgiving Service which isn't a Baptism for those who want to allow children to choose to be baptised as adults.

I've been doing Family History for some time.
One thing has always puzzled me.
My mothers birth name was Mabel Maud Dean Marsh.
I have always wondered where the 'Dean' came from.
My mother was born in Cape Town S.A. 1907.
Eventually I hit on what I think is the reason.
My Grandfathers name was Robert George Deacon Marsh. Deacon being his mothers maiden surname.
I have my mothers Birth Certificate and it is written out by a not very good writer, possibly a clerk in the Registrars Office in Cape town.
My feeling, no real evidence, is that the clerk mis-heard what was said and put Dean instead of Deacon.
I did ask my mother where the Dean came from and she didn't know of any family with that name.
Unfortunately, my G/Pa was a 'rover' and the family split up when my mother was about 6 or 7 and she rarely saw him again.
I am still trying to find out where he died. He had travelled to S.A. of course, and later to India.
P.S. I never met my Grandad. Actually I never met either of my Grandads.

I've just been talking to a guy whose surname is Cocks....... 🍆

When I was 9 and had to pick a 'confirmation' name......I picked JEROME....because I thought it was one of the Jackson 5......🤔
It's on all my ID.....🍆

Back in the 1970s I had a work contact in London, a lovely chap from the West Indies and we used to talk cricket all the time.

He told me that, when he was a young lad growing up in Barbados, he played in the same junior team as Garfield St Aubrun Sobers and was a decent all-rounder himself.

'Herbert Hubert Herbert' was his name and, to this day, I still PMSL when I hear someone say "There, but for the grace of God, go I" 🙂

Parents want unique names so that their kids don't have 10 other kids in their class with the same class.
