Nearly 50 years ago( yes I was around and playing) there were at least 2 different Sunday Leagues.I played originally for the Blue Fountain which then renamed itself as the County and Commercial had two teams.
The first team started to play their Sunday games in the afternoon and many players lost interest ( after all part of the Sunday football attraction was a few pints afterwards and remember in those days pubs had strict Sunday hours and closed at 3pm and didn’t reopen until the evening).
The result was they failed to fulfill their fixtures so the then league committee wanted our second team, which I helped run and captained much of the time) to take their place in the higher league.I had to attend a full meeting with the committee to argue it was not a great idea as we played in the lower divisions and the first team were in the second division and none of the first team were keen to step down to play for “us“ and nor did we want them too as it would mean our lot would be unlikely to get a game but nor did we want to thrashed every week as was most likely to happen. We obviously wanted to be competitive but we really played for fun and never really set out to win trophies and losing on a regular basis is not fun.
The committee relented and agreed to keep us the division we were in.
Can’t remember exactly the dates but I know we joined the smaller Sunday league eventually.
This was in the period late sixties to 1977 when I moved away to where we live now in Cheadle Hulme. My Sunday football from there on was in the Manchester Accountants League and my final game was in 1993….I was too sore every Monday morning to carry on
