We spoke to former Blackpool captain Jay Spearing to chat about his time with Liverpool, captaining Bolton and why he left Bloomfield Road last season.

Jay spoke really well of Critchley and the club itself and is now playing with Tranmere alongside Liam Feeney and Calum MacDonald.

I like Spearing always did a job for us

We certainly missed his leadership at the start of this season

Yep, but he wasn’t and you can get cheaper midfield generals in league 1 than Jay. He was a perfectly decent player, but we can’t afford to pay the “ex-Liverpool” premium that he was getting. His name might get fans through the gate at Tranmere (when the gates open) but not at BFC. The plastics scouser fans in the town simply watch their team on telly.

Hells bells just how good would Messi have been if was taller?
Would Messi have made it outside of Argentina if he didn't have the hormone deficiency though? I think he would have certainly made his professional debut for his boyhood club Newells old boys.

Obviously dont know what he was like in the dressing room but what impressed me about Spearing was the fact that even though he played at the highest level and his career never reached anything like the heights anticipated he never thought he was something and he always put a shift in.

Would Spearing get into the current side? Certainly not now Stewart and Dougall are in, but if one of those was out?

Spearing was the leader in the pitch needed in the dark times. He kept the ball moving, albeit mostly sideways and backwards, but that movement of the ball created space for launching the ball at Gonads head. A good player for us, never once said anything objectionable about the fan boycott or pro-Oyston nonsense either. A very good pro.

Spearing (a bit like Curtis Tilt) was a quality player that helped keep the club at a reasonable level during very difficult times so I was very grateful of their contribution. Never felt we would be in the relegation places with him around even with the turmoil going on.
