Why no undersoil heating?

From what I understand the reason why we don't have undersoil heating is because there is a gas pipe that runs through the middle of the pitch. Obviously there can't be any risk of ignition should there be a breach in the pipe. No doubt the momentary implication's would be significantly costly to have it rerouted.

Who've you been listening to the old Scarecrow? I'm sure they ran this line a few years back, not sure if there's any truth in it or not.

I coached on the community in 96 and I remember asking my boss Craig Madden why we didn't have undersoil heating and that was what Craig told me.

Purely down to the Os wanting the money for other things like woolly mammoths

Why would we need under soil heating?

We don't NEED under soil heating but if we had it, it would obviously mean that games were far less likely to be abandoned in conditions like today.

If we could have it installed and maintained free of charge, I think it's fair to say we'd have it installed immediately.

I think a better question would be, can we justify the cost of installing and maintaining under soil heating ?

Because it's bloody expensive to run you'd be lucky to get away with 2-3k a day maybe more with the current energy costs.
And here's the kicker you can't switch it off, when the temperature goes below a certain degree even though you might not have a game for a fortnight it switches on.
Ten day cold snap in December here's a whopping great energy bill.

Global warming and all that.

But they just get played at a later date. Sure, In this specific situation it'd have been ideal to have the game on... but other times we could be thankful for the break.
Hit lucky with the timing of this one but you don’t not get under soil heating so you can have a surprise break now and again

It's a wonder football ever happened before the invention of under soil heating! An unnecessary and wasteful utility that every club could easily live without...

Was it Lancs who used and firm of hot air covers?

Seems to me that's a much better use of resources as we'd only turn out on when we needed it - which isn't that often

Was doing some investigation in sand batteries a few weeks ago. Just occured to me it would be perfect for running undersoil heating systems at minimal running costs, solar panels collect the heat through the summer and it gets distributed under the pitch when it's needed during the winter, as well as providing all the hot water and heating for the stadium facilities. Maybe a bit of warm air blown under the tartan blankets for those in the west.

Here we go again. Barnpot fans spending some mythical money.

Course we don't fecking need it. Idiotic.

When we are consistently stable in the Championship and more fans turn up, it might be an option.

We are some way from there.

If we did have undersoil heating I suppose we would have to had a power cut today with the double benefit of no floodlights as well.

I can imagine some warm water in a pipe is a major risk with a dodgy spark next to a gas pipe that more than likely is not there anyway.
Cnut previous owners never installed it when we had the perfect opportunity and money to do so

Correct and an installation cost of £250,000

Image this scenario, Blackpool were potentially a premiership challenging contender with a rich benefactor who spent on the ground to enhance there chances !

Those clamouring for once a decade undersoil heating will be the same ones moaning about lack of investment in the team, and why aren't match day prices £15.

Whilst the costs vs benefits debate is relevant, I would ask two questions. How many teams in the top 2 divisions DON'T have under-soil heating? And assuming the answer is a low figure, why would you assume that the majority were wrong to install it?

Blackpool has a milder climate than nearly everywhere else, certainly among football teams.

It’s still baffling why we were the only club in the top two divisions to be called off due to a frozen pitch, there must be plenty of clubs without under soil heating who managed to play.

Is there any reason why the football season runs straight through the winter as it does? It would be much easier if it was March to October/November? It's so much better going on a sunny summers day and for a beer after compared to freezing your balls off in winter on a crappy night game with noone there.

Could always play on another continent when long range weather forecast is bad.
