Why the ESL will not happen.....

Whatever you think of Boris he is not stupid and has survival instincts of a cats lives squared, yes he had an initial disaster with Covid - BUT since...

The vaccine program has been a success but the Torys need a major public victory away from Covid to show they are the people’s party - to shore up the red wall.

What better than taking on the big 6 and stopping the ESL.

Philip Hammond has just said they will stop and cancel work permits for these clubs as the nuclear option, if they carry on.

You have Tory sleaze raising its head and what better way to stand up to big business than by keeping the ‘people’s game’ (coff) for the people.

People talk about that the 6 have already examined the law - what they can’t influence is the government changing the law.

....in the end there will be one winner, and that will be Boris as he is championed as footballs saviour.

This has the ability to get him another fiver years and unfortunately for Cats that time will be in Downing Street.

....and believe me, from what I have been told already - he sees this as the golden ticket to re-election.

Make of that what you will 👍

You’re right, it’s a gift, it’s as good as Corbyn coming back to lead labour.

It won't happen because it's being used as a bargaining chip for the 'big' clubs against reforms in the Champions League.
That’s more likely to be the reason it won’t happen.
It could result in the greedy clubs getting even greedier but.........with the outcry of fans big six fans & non six clubs directors, some good could come out of this “stupid proposal” not occurring.

I would love ❤️ to be wrong and see it happen, but I am very much in the “it won’t happen” camp🚌🧡🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

It’s gone further than that mate from what I am being told, they REALLY want to do it and it will take new legislation to stop it - UNLESS the clubs back track.

My source is impeccable 👍

It’s reported by the Independent that one English Club is already “back-tracking”.
Of course it could be a ploy to sell more newspapers.🙄🚌🧡🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Agree with straighters; I suspect it is a badly thought out posturing strategy by elite clubs to gain leverage over EUFA.

For Johnson`s populist government it is a no brainer - just a simple free hit. I don`t think he`ll be viewed as "a saviour"; just that he was on the right side of the argument.

I would suggest talk of this as "a golden ticket to re-election" is rather premature, as the next one is likely to be in three years and an awful lot can change.

It may be the case by then the public, the Conservative party and Johnson himself, may all be ready for a change.

I suspect Johnson will certainly be looking to monetise his time in high office sooner rather that later....

There will be an early election - the second they think they can get a similar or better majority than currently.

He is seeing it as becoming the people’s PM and hence the golden ticket - he may be wrong, but that IS what he is telling senior Torys.

The Spanish and Italian authorities would have to do the same

Not necessarily, without the English clubs - it devalues the competition (TV rights) so much it may, and probably is (will) not be worth it.
Not to mention the German clubs, no English and German clubs in it and you've no competition.

As mentioned, it could well be some sabre rattling going on here, if it means an extended Champions League I'm all for it.

What the op says makes perfect sense. Boris is a politician and opportunist why would he not take advantage of this to boost his popularity and gain another term. These greedy pigs need defeating and any weapon is welcome.

Just had a WhatsApp to say Boris (if needed) will make the ESL a protected event, therefore it has to be shown on free to air 😂

Class move - all of sudden he wipes out millions of TV revenue for them 😂😂😂😂

Been in the sun with a few whetts, Seasideone?

Do you know what Seaside, if you had said ...." I think Boris (if needed) will make the ESL a protected event, therefore it has to be shown on free to air"...and it happened...then everyone would have gone.....Oooooooooooo, he's spot on, I bet he's on a WhatsApp group with someone ITK....

BUT...the fact it's the EUROPEAN Super league.....how would Boris be able to do that when games will be played in Spain & Italy and only 50% of the games will be in the UK..... 🤔......you sure this WhatsApp group isn't some mates down the dole office having a laugh??

My 2p is that the 6 clubs vastly over-estimate their own importance, the PL made them, they did not make the PL.

I think the PL and the rest of the football league have enough strength to stand up to the clubs, I think they will do so, I think they will win.

They can (and will) if needed protect the TV coverage in the UK.

The UK is one of the biggest payers of TV money to the CL - so the UK gov can easily reduce it 👍

All it would take would be a nice donation to Tory HQ for all this Government opposition to quietly get dropped.

Looks like its caving in now, the barrage of pressure from fans and media, the government.

All the potential obstacles from fans boycotting, making life and games difficult, blocking games off etc.

To players under threat of international duty being cancelled etc.

To already difficult issues about competition law to the government going all in saying they will change laws etc.

Add it all up and its all a bit too much me thinks.

Was this they Yanks doing? Whoever it was looks like they completely underestimated the will of the English to protect our national game.

The Premier league is a soft power for the UK and promotes the country and is huge in spreading our brand.

The UK government were never going to take lightly to this being under threat of all the big teams walking away, or being kicked out.

Well done all.

But... these owners, particularly the Yanks and RM’s Perez are still shits. Unforgivable.
Never let them forget that. It’s still a good enough reason to boycott the b’strds forevermore until they go.

I wonder what percentage of the voting public give a shit about grass roots football?

I don't know about a golden ticket Johnno but clearly Boris is of the opinion that football can provide a popularity boost.

Why else would he be getting involved in this Super League business when the country is in lockdown ?

See my post above, football is a UK institution and part of English way of life.

The prem is also a huge soft power around the world for the UK, the government were not going to let it go lightly or at all.

Personally, I don't think that Boris should have intervened, what the clubs were doing was clearly not popular but was not illegal.

I agree with seaside that football can be a vote winner but I wouldn't say golden ticket.

Yeah but with vested interest in the league as it is and the outrage of reaction and thee way it could shape our traditional game, they clealry felt they needed to. Plus the chance to stick it to a horrendous idea where people will appreciate that support is good pr.

Its a no brainer they would get involved. There was a hell of a lot at stake here that the proposers either underestimated or didn't understand.

I'd say more about the PR than a genuine concern for the beautiful game JJ.

Well that football revolution didn't last very long. The English clubs u-turned and now Athletico Madrid and Inter Milan have dropped out.

Maybe they should have a European Super League with the Glasgow clubs, Young Boys, RasenBallsportLeipzig EV, Lincoln Red Imps
and FC Midtjylland.
