Wigan playing £10k a week for a player

Now, let us address the elephants in the room. There’s two players in particular, whose wages have been bandied about regularly, and neither of them appear to have the solution to our goals problem. At least not at Championship level, arguably even not at League One level, and neither is 'one for the future'. Both are still under contract, and we’ve heard the figure of 10k per week mentioned for at least one of them. It could actually be both, as both will have received a significant pay rise upon promotion - this could be 10, 20, 50 or even 100 per cent. The sum of the parts given the rumours of the size of our current wage bill suggests it might be one of the higher numbers.

It’s a weird league isn’t it? Sadler has lost a shed load of cash this season as the gap between income and wages / outgoings widened.

Yet… this gap was absolute buttons compared to all the others in the league hence why we are next to bottom of the league. It’s all completely fucked. You shouldn’t have to lose tens of £millions per season just to stay mid table.

EFL / FA / Premier League frankly don’t care either. As long as there’s suckers prepared to empty their family trusts to keep it going then they’re happy with it all.

So now we reach the point where at the top of the pyramid a multi millionaire is not enough. It now needs to be a multi billionaire or an actual nation state. WTF?

It wouldn't surprise me if we had players on or close to £10,000 a week.

Ishmael Miller (remember him) was on £10k basic a week on a two year deal back in the day.

Chunky makes some great comments.

You need to pare down the overhead to the bone unless you are prepared to lose millions each year and hope that you might strike lucky one year having made the right decisions and get to the prem.

The inequality in football is a disgrace.

Correct. It’s no longer about things like getting a crowd in to watch the game … gate receipts are peanuts compared to media (TV) receipts. And then parachute payments come on top of that for the privileged few. And then you have various owners funding anything between £15-25 million of losses per season.

It’s very likely that we’ll be joined by one of QPR, Reading and Cardiff, all of whom habitually post seven figure losses.

Not sure I’d want to be in a position where someone is throwing away £15mn a year to finish 12th, in the knowledge that we’re only there because someone is signing the cheques and could stop doing so any day.

Everything is distorted by the insane level of money being gambled in the Premier League with Chelsea and Forest two prime examples. This then filters down to the Championship with clubs competing more on player salaries than transfer fees. I wonder how Burnley and Sheff Uniteds' total salary compares to ours. I would guess that QPR, Cardiff, Reading and even Huddersfield dwarf what we are paying out.

Jerry was on £10k a week last season. No idea about the others any more though.

I totally agree but Sadler did say he was against a spending cap when we were in Div 1 so we can't really complain can we?

If the salaries in the article above are correct Jerry was clearly not on 10k a week last season. However as has been pointed out many times, basic wages are only a part of the equation; appearances, league position and other factors contribute to bonuses which can significantly increase what the players receive.

The article above is a load of made up nonsense with all due respect.

Is mullen at Wrexham on £4500 pw for national league? Ridiculous if true. and that's why game is in the state its in.

Worth it if he drags them back into the league
It is,, simply because the Wrexham fans have got themselves filling their ground.
Many of our supporters moan at £16;52 a game for season tickets.
It makes me laugh, how people complain that we are not an established Championship club when we only get 9500-10000 home fans.

The club have increased revenue in loads of different ways yet every time they do a fan based initiative like the Heineken or Moretti lounge initiatives, people moan about the cost.

I could understand it if the money was being 'trousered' but it's not.

Unless us as fans help out, and I'm not talking bucket loads of cash, then I'm afraid things can't and won't improve.

For my part I buy a pint before and one at half time. I buy my ST, I regularly buy bits from the club shop at Christmas and throughout the season.
I make a point of, if I'm going out for a drink on a Saturday after the game, i meet my wife in the hotel bar for a quick pint, again a bit more cash.
Usually on a match day I'll spend between £10-£20 in the ground.
It's not a massive amount but every little bit is supporting the club.
If we have family over and there is a game on I will fetch someone with me.
If I can't go to a game I lend my ST so someone else can use it and spend in the ground and hopefully get the bug and go a bit more regularly.
I encourage friends to go, even when as now, we're not exactly pulling up trees.
For me, the atmosphere created by the North Stand that then goes around the ground is fantastic. Even at 0-2 the fans got behind the team.,....that's how special this club is.

If everyone helped a little bit it would help the clubs finances a hugely.

UTMP.

A nobber neighbour of mine reckons their highest paid player is on £20k a week . Can’t remember who he said it was though .
