Will Middlesbrough be off?

From official governement mourning guidance :

There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures...this is at the discretion of individual organisations. As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral. They are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations. If fixtures are planned for the day of the State Funeral, organisations might want to adjust timings so they don't clash with the timing of the funeral.

I am emphatically against cancelling sporting events.

What happened to the old adage “the Queen is dead long live the king“?

I much prefer that life goes on as normally as possible (with the exception of the funeral date) and people show their respect with a minutes silence or applause

As has been mentioned on other threads what about away supporters who have booked their travel and hotels.

I do not understand who it benefits or why it is showing respect, to cancel football matches.
As I write this reply, I don't feel like shouting, foul, corner etc. Definitely not swearing. Just does not feel right. This weekend should be off.

I totally agree CW, Someone might shout 'bugger' or 'blimey' and that would set me off weeping again. People should have some respect. It's only one day and we should close the whole country down as a mark of respect.

Completely diasagree.

This is much bigger than businesses losing custom and football fans not being able to go to matches.

FFS get things in perspective. This will never ever happen again.
Is Charles immortal?

I think you’re probably in the minority here.

The collective volume of fans watching matches this weekend, all singing god save the queen at 2:58pm would be great.
Dream. My overall view is that should all be off. But I know there is the other angle. Celebration of a wonderful person s life and life must go on. I will go along with whatever decisions are made.

Of course it will happen again. No-one is immortal - not even the Monarachy.

Joke of a decision to call off the games. Was looking forward to going tomorrow being exiled. And especially looking forward to paying respects with the minute silence and singing the national anthem. Instead now, going to be at home suffocated watching the news no doubt.

Gov announces games can go ahead, 1 minute later EFL and Premier league postpone games

Completely diasagree.

Perspective around people losing money? The queen was a people person. She won't want the world to stop for one day for her. There's 1000s of ways to remember her and stopping peoples livelyhoods isn't one. In fact, it's borderline ** ridiculous this decision has been made.

Apparently the EFL were following the PL's decision. The PL have called them off. Wonder if that's because they don't want the bad PR when Liverpool boo the minutes silence.

How is it?

A mark of respect would be everyone getting together, observing a minutes silence and singing the national anthem. Sitting at home bored achieves nothing.
Gary. Each of us have our different opinions. I can understand yours. Honestly I really can. I just don't feel like shouting and moaning at a football match right now. Does not feel right.

Its been called off because of the Daily Mail effect.

Ask yourself what would it look like in the Daily Mail and you won't go too far wrong in terms of gauging the nutter element of society.

They would undoubtedly spin it as thousands going out having a beer and being raucous at a time when they should be grieving.

I think you may have a point. To put it another way (sort of) the level of respect for royalty these days in is not what it was in 1952. Not so many people will accept that the mourning has to drag on day after day. I certainly don't, and no doubt the raucous elements among football fans also don't. I would have let the matches take place tomorrow, turned off the piped music at the ground, arranged for black armbands and a minute's silence. That would have sufficed and the Queen as a "sporty" person would have understood.

You and hundreds of thousands of sports fans ,fans loosing money on hotels trains etc, time of work, at a time when money is tight due to a bunch of faceless and nameless woke people cancelling.

And the rest of the money the royals have had off us, for merely being born. How much is the funeral going to cost the taxpayer I wonder??

You should be able to apply to be the next monarch of England. In this day and age its a totally farcical system.

Perfect time to abolish the royals if you ask me.

Woke? The opposite of woke, I would suggest. Ironic, those whinging constantly about cancel culture, cancelling everything.

Get things in perspective?

Like Cricket, Golf and Rugby have 👍🏼

The Queen dies after 70 years on the throne, it's not like some Z list celebrity dying it's our only monarch in most people's life time..

The lady should be Respected and games called off to Respect the passing of our great Queen.

Show our Respect as fans when the time is right, not 2 days after Her Majesty's passing.

Football will survive a call off this weekend.

Totally agree. Unfortunately, a large percentage of AVFTT posters are about as sensitive as a a rubber cosh.

The majority on here are against the postponements and this appears reflective of social media in general. We should be paying our respects and belting out 'god save the queen' along with 3k+ boro fans this afternoon as far as I'm concerned.

I think respect would have been doing something as one in the grounds across the Country.

Instead of doing nothing.

The fact it’s even stretched to grassroots football is farcical.

Lots of others sports carrying on, is that disrespectful then?
