Will our retained list show ambition or weakness?

So here's the players who are out of contract and who I'd ditch and keep (and I was pretty ruthless)

Keep: Connolly, Anderson, Nelson, Goode, Thorniley

Ditch: Maxwell, Moore, Husband, Garbutt, Dougall, Stewart, Bridcutt, Hamilton, Lubala, Poveda, Lavery, Madine

I'd keep Lavery and CJ, I suspect Lavery will settle just fine in L1 and CJ has already proved that is his level. The rest I agree with. Goode has a poor injury record and will be big wages, I suspect we won't go in for him.

Goode is only on loan, Nelson and Thorniley are out of contract without options. I'd keep Connolly, Moore, Husband and Lavery, probably Hamilton as well even though I'm not his biggest fan, Dougall can definitely do a job in L1 and is a central midfielder who hasn't got a horrendous injury record.

Whatever happens its a huge summer of recruitment and going on our recent record it's concerning, we will probably see more 1 year options activated than we'd like because of this.

I'd keep Lavery, but agree with the rest.

We must be ruthless if we're to bounce back from L1 (assuming we can't escape).
Ian Poveda is on loan from Leeds, so he'll go back.
Big new keeper needed.
We've leaked goals all season, & looked disorganised at the back. So we need two mobile centre halves with pace - which neither of the current players have. We're OK for fullbacks.
We need combative, leaders in the midfield, which Dougal isn't & Connolly's better in the back four. We also need a creative player in there, as the loans will go back.
A new centre forward in support of Jerry (if he stays). Lavery can do a job in L1. I'm on the fence with CJ, as he blows hot & cold.
Lewis Fiorini & Morgan Rogers would be great assets - if they'll come to us.

We need at least two new strikers and they won’t come cheap. I’d keep Lavery too and CJ. I’d agree with Connolly, Nelson and Thorniley but the rest can go.

They’re not going to ditch Maxwell. He lives locally and for some bizarre reason has been our last two manager’s number one.

All depends on what league we're in.

Assuming league 1 I would keep:

Maxwell, Husband, Dougal, Hamilton, Lavery, Connolly, Nelson, Anderson, Thornily

Stewart is a funny one as he's obviously been out all season recovering from whatever the hells wrong with him. Maybe this recovery time has fixed him? Maybe not. I'd leave that one up to the physios. Maybe get him on a reduced contract with some kind of appearance bonus to boost his wage if he plays. Based on that though he would probably go to swindle someone else out of a wage and a squad place.

Maybe the same for bridcutt? But he's proved himself for us even less than Stewart.

Might keep Lubala as well, he's still somewhat of an unseen force and for some reason I have a bit of a soft spot for him. Performed well I'm pre season for us so I would probably get him enlisted in the 25 for the last few games and play either him or Holmes from the start and get the other on the bench as they have to be better than playing someone out of position.

So I would be releasing Moore, Garbutt and Bridcutt (Goode and Pov are both loans)

We don't want too much of a threadbare squad leading to a major rebuild as we clearly don't have the funds to even improve what we currently have.

To be honest even if we stay up I would probably lean towards the same proposal stated. Perhaps minus the queries on Stewart and Lubala

Personally I'd like to see us go for Rogers and Fiorini on permanent deals. Obviously we are hoping Trybull can get and stay fit but we will need another experienced head in the middle if we are ditching Dougall, Stewart and Bridcutt.
Are you serious?

Ignoring the fact that they're already on wages far beyond what a L1 club will pay, and are contracted at City for at least another year (Rogers) and in Fiorini's case 3 years, they're not going to step down to the third flight in a million years.

Kenny is a good reliable player at L1 level. Championship is slightly above him and it shows, but handy to have down there. He's also our only (touch wood) CM who is reliably fit for selection every week.. I'd keep Lavery too, I think he can do well against L1 defences where he can get that extra yard or take an extra touch against poorer quality defences. Thorniley won't sign a new contract sadly, who can blame him though, been treated awfully since he signed for us. Shame because he's been superb when called upon.

The rest of the ditch I'd probably agree with. I think LB needs strengthening, or play Lyons there and Gabriel RB.

That would be a great start to the pre season if we signed these 2. Both had successful seasons in league 1 with Lincoln

Pretty sure it’s a squad of 22 in L1 but loans don’t count towards the total so it’ll be interesting how that plays into things.

I’m doing this on the basis we are going down, I would like to keep:

Connolly - but not CM!
Anderson
Thorniley
Husband
Dougall
Lavery

I suspect Maxwell will stay and we could do a lot worse in L1 but I suspect one of him or Grimshaw will leave.

If we pull off a miracle and stay in the Championship then I’d take Connolly and Dougall off the list and let them go unless Connolly was kept on as a defender as he isn’t CM standard for this level. I do like Dougall as well but I think he’s one of them that’s really good at L1 but not good enough for Championship.

Get rid: Connolly, Maxwell, Moore, Garbutt, Dougall, Stewart, Bridcutt,

Husband Hamilton, Lavery. Anderson, Take Option

Thorniley, Nelson, Offer new deals

Ambition is fine but considering how the past few transfer windows have gone are we able to replace with anyone better or be left with a poorer team or struggling to make up the numbers?

That's what worries me. If they continue sleep walking from terrible decision to terrible decision then you have to think that we are going to get worse players and struggle to make up the numbers. They are going to have to change their mindset completely because the last 18 months have been appalling and there's nothing to show they have learnt from their mistakes.

Yep, they need to turn it all around or it's going to start resembling the previous regime.

We're not allowed to say or think that. I agree though, completely different circumstances but it is worrying how quickly it has all unravelled and as I have said on several threads we could be manageress CEO less, Recruitment team less, player less at the end of the season, which also goes with clueless. It's a massive year for the club and I am dreading pre-season.

Exercise option: Maxwell, Husband, Connolly, Dougall
Offer 1+1 year contract: Nelson, Thorniley, Hamilton
Release: Moore, Garbutt, Stewart, Bridcutt, Virtue, Lubala, Madine
Playing for their futures between now and the end of the season: Anderson, Lavery

Most of them need to go. I’ll only attempt to keep Anderson, Lavery and Thornley. The rest are not good enough even for league one and can go.

Lavery was good before his injury when he was playing as striker. Not sure how many times since coming back he has had a chance to play up front. I would keep him and start playing him where he should play.

Especially in L1 I think he will do really well up front.

There's been a lot of shit written about players being 'lower league 1' level. Which is bollocks. There's plenty in the squad who are well good enough to be big players in League 1 and not quite good enough for the Championship without higher quality support.

The biggest issue will be who of the current permanent squad stays and who goes.

I've no idea where we'll stand on keepers. I find it hard to believe 3 consecutive gaffers have concluded that there's no footballing case to replace Maxi (who I think has generally been overly criticised) with Grimmy at any point this season. That implies non-footballing reasons are driving that decision. All things being equal, you'd think Grimmy would be the number 1 and he's definitely a top end League 1 keeper. If it's still Maxi, he's not going to make too many errors and we know a confident Maxi has the ability to make outstanding saves.

Gabriel would be one of the best right backs in the league - assuming he's a) fit and b) allowed to play. Hubby is a rock solid, League 1 left back who won't make many errors and can be used effectively at CB too (at league 1 level). Also, Garbutt's defensive weaknesses are less exposed against weaker players. Marv would surely be one of the leagues better CB's and we know Judd doesn't let people down. Connolly would be far more at home at RB or CB in League 1, where his lack of footballing ability will be less exposed.

Midfield is where some change is going to be needed. Sonny is talented and would benefit from a season at a lower level. I think he could really thrive there. However, Kenny was a good League 1 midfielder, but I have suspicions (no idea why) that he's going to leave at the end of the season. Connolly will still not be able to pass well in League 1 and should only be used in CM as a last resort. Can Keshi remain fit? He's not managed it much before so I'm not holding my breath and CJ will still have loads of pace but obvious weaknesses in other critical areas that mean he's a very hit and miss selection.

Looking up front, I'd feel very happy seeing Jerry lining up. Lavery will benefit in the same way as Sonny will. The questions will be around target men. Will Gaz Mads still be here? Is Beesley ever going to be fit? If the answer to both questions is no, then obviously they need to be properly replaced.

All of this is completely hypothetical of course. We've no real idea of the key details. Recruitment has to be better, at least in strategy if not genuine proven quality and I can only base future performance on past evidence and that won't always tally.

The retained list is a bit of a worry. If no manager is in place, who decides?

Absolutely vital they get a new manager in very soon and if SD is doing well, get him involved, but please not as manager....just yet. Talking a good game is very different from delivering a good game, as MM proved. Especially in 100% free hit territory.

Tharme and Casey have played almost an entire season in L1, admittedly near the bottom of the league both under contract so maybe losing Nelson and Thorniley is not a disaster,
Virtue again has played quite a few games in L1 and we might get money for him, would be OK as squad player given you suggest losing 3 midfielders.
We also have Dale and possibly James to come back.
If by some miracle we stay up it is a different scenario

It all comes down to 'Cash' in the end.
SS can't afford to spend lavishly.
Old saying 'Cut your coat to suit your cloth'.

Sooty, fair question.

The problem with a season like this is it skews ones thinking and perception of normality. All players get injured, then come back when fit and carry on. We've just had 8-10 years worth in less than 2.

There's no reason to believe that with a full preseason behind him TT won't play in the majority, at least.

We've become very fond on here of the phrase injury prone, or crock. Kevin Stewart is the only one who remotely merits it. After that we've signed under prepared players who've pulled up lame as a result.

TT is our foundation next season.
