Yates or Lavery to the left midfield thoughts?

I thought Yates did wel and looked good at passing and movement starting on the left, didn't see him run much with the ball which I would like to see him be more direct.

Lavery has played for Northern Ireland a few times on the left, but when I saw him at Southport looked out of place and never got into the game and indeed Salford where he had a couple of chances and should of scored.

So my thoughts are they can fill in the role but we need a proper left winger playing there.

If it was my choice, I’d be letting Lavery go…
I'm still hoping he can turn it round, we've seen him better than this, after the injury he seemed clueless.

Got himself into the position yesterday, did he nick the ball? But got 1 on 1 and should have shot, the Lavery of old would have.

Strikers sometimes just need a goal or 2.

But obviously he needs to get it and improve soon or he won't be getting many more chances.

I like Lavery and he has some obvious strengths - the enthusiasm of his pressing, his instinctive movement in the box etc. - but he’s also a player that doesn’t seem to fit in the modern game. Good off the bench, but technically lacking if he’s playing in a 3.

Not sure why anyone would mention Simms in this conversation. He plays for Sunderland. Not Blackpool. May as well mention Harry Kane or Lewandowski for all the sense it makes.

So it’s Madine until we have a better option.

Lavery doesn't fit in the modern game but a striker who doesn't jump or can't run does?

Show me one top level player or even prem player who is like Madine.

Watch any La Liga game if you think Lavery doesn't fit the modern game.

I don’t see Lavery linking play or instinctively knowing how to interchange from inside left to inside right (in old money). Which is what the modern ‘striker’ needs to do.

You’re making the mistake of thinking because I have mentioned the weaknesses of a player, I don’t rate him. Actually I think Lavery is a great striker, but his strengths (to my mind) aren’t naturally suited to 3 up front.
Just posing the question, wasn't putting words in your mouth. I think Yates links the attack well/can make things happen from LW better than Lav but Lav is the better goal threat. Up front on his own he would have scored yesterday if he had more time.

IMV - Lavery is suited to coming off the bench in last 15 when you want to see the game out - operating as a lone striker terrorising and chasing nothing balls down. So a very important role that he's perfectly suited for.

He’s our most instinctive goalscorer for sure. Fizz a ball across the box and he’s sure to be making his runs across the defenders to get onto it. I doubt Jerry or the Mads Man would naturally do the same. The dilemma for a coach is how you fit them all together to make the team better.

I actually thought Lavery looked a little sharper yesterday but still hasnt got back to where he was at this time last season. He is the best penalty box finisher at the club but we dont play to his strengths at all and he isnt a midfielder in any way shape or form as his passing and control are not quite good enough...I like him in a high press where he is like a little rat chasing every ball...at the moment he is an impact sub for me as is Bez.

Yates is a player without a true position and we are struggling to fit him in...I thought he was good in spells yesterday but also anonymous at times. I would like to see him in a front 2/3 with two other pressing players which Madine clearly isnt up to.

Madine on his own up top doesnt work and I hope Madine as first name on the team sheet isnt going to be a season long thing. I see him as a great player to bring on when you are looking at protecting a lead where his shithousery and defensive abilities are to the fore...he is not going to get 10 goals in a season even taking the pens and that isnt enough from your main centre forward. I still think we will bring another striker in as we still havent got this position right and goals are what win games.

Think that’s pretty reasonable TTP and it’s pretty much how I see it. Jerry would benefit from an extended run in the side, in a set position. Think back to the Holloway era - even players like Brett and GTF needed time to understand how you play in a 3. One game in and one game out will never work.

Whoever it is needs to be left sided. That means either Apter, Garbutt or CJ. Right footers on the left, clog up the midfield. I suppose they could move Bowler across.??

I wouldn't want to put a square peg in a round hole, as the Championship teams will always exploit vulnerabilities in their opposition.
So my answer is definitely neither - we need to recruit a quality midfielder.
I also think that it would be better for Lavery & BFC to transfer him out.

Seemingly not the school of thought currently in the game.

Yates did pretty well on the left of the front 3 yesterday and he played there for a season at Swindon under Wellens. I'd stick with it for now I think.
