The Pen

Couldn’t see it very clearly from the South. To be honest, neither could the Bolton fans from their position. Santos was lucky not to concede a free kick just outside the box in the first half when he shoulder barged Lavs (I think) off the ball, he wasn’t even looking at the ball, Bolton fans didn’t mind that though! After watching the replay on Sky two or three times I genuinely think it was a penalty. Not sure about the red though.

Dangerous tackle, straight red. Irrespective of pen decision. As they say.'I've seen them given'. 😆

Tackle from behind and both feet of the ground ,at least that's what I thought and I sit right on front row where incident happend in which case if that's what the ref saw then he had to go so red and pen ,about time we had a 1/2 decent ref.utmp

Not seen it back but looked very harsh
The sending off more so
We certainly can’t complain about the refereeing today 🍊

red all day long. Went thru back of our player denying him clear goalscoring opportunity.

What’s negative about the OP
I’d not seen the replay when I posted and qualified it after
Everyone around me was at the time of the same view
And if you watch the podcast you’d see that the content reflects the events so you might gets some positivity this week

Was a pen Joseph caught him on the blindside. Over last couple of years if you make a genuine challenge and give a penalty away it’s not a sending off. Double Jeopardy rule apparently. Give Joseph credit for getting there and would have scored. Santos was let down by his team more than the ref and was much more of a pen than Peterborough’s on Tuesday.

But the rule suggests if if tried to play the ball then it isn’t
I’m not arsed that the ref did but at the time I’m was surprised
This happened right infront of me and at the time I was very surprised, thought it was a pen but not a red. However after watching the replays, it's a red. If we had VAR they wouldn't over turn that.

I wasn't sure at the time but having seen the replay, it's a nailed on penalty and a clear red card... last man, two footed, through the player, from behind and stopped a clear scoring opportunity. Have I missed anything?

Double jeopardy law means irrelevant whether you are last man or if it is a goal scoring opportunity if the offence is in the box and a penalty is given.
However you have to be making a genuine attempt to play the ball, and you can’t be doing this if you have no chance of winning it.
The picture clearly shows he has no chance of winning the ball, he’s wrong side and going through the back of Joseph who, in my opinion is about to tap the ball into an empty net.
Definite red!

I’ve now been convinced by all of the unbiased opinions and evidence that it WAS a penalty and WAS a red card

Indeed, looking at the pic posted above it should be upgraded to a 5 match ban (6 if he appeals the red)

Got to give the ref credit. At the time, like many others, I thought it was harsh to send him off but it looks correct on replays.

Clear as day foul and pen, and the only way the red card could be deemed as harsh was the ref had allowed at least three of those through the back tackles for notlob players without giving even free kicks for two of them, a couple of body checks one on dembele early which wad a nailed on yellow, and a second i think on lavs.
Personally thought the ref was shisser again, but fortunately his crap decisions didn't have any negative effect on us.

i liked how their players surrounded the ref and then Husband got there and no doubt he was making the pint that it had to be a red card. He's very good at getting in the refs ear when it's needed.

Definate pen
Bolton fans asking about double jepody.
But both feet were off the ground and it was a goal scoring chance(agree wide but Joseph would have tapped it in)
