2010 vs now

I think if someone asked you to compare the 2010 squad to the current one it would be very difficult as things are / were so different. In most cases it would be a lot of the 2010 squad and a debate to be had about the manager.

It may then be surprising to know that we’ve actually gained more points so far this season than we had at this point in 2010:

The points total for our play-off rivals are higher this year but there’s every chance that could come down as teams play each other in the run-in.

In 2010 we lost 3-0 to Sheff Utd in our next game but went on to climb over the Blades to finish 6th. Could it be a replay this year???

more important than points total was position in the league and proximity to the play offs. 2010 we were much better placed position wise and points off the play off positions.

The next two games are huge because they are chances to haul back teams above us. Same with the Blackburn game. We have 3 chances to hinder our competition for playoff positions. In my mind, we need 7 points from those games and a strong finish in the remaining games.

It's a huge ask, but it would be a very typically Blackpo late surge for the playoffs.

I reckon a best of XI would contain some 2022 players

Grimmy
Coleman Ekpiteta Evatt Crainey
Vaughan Stewart Adam
Bowler DJ Anderson

Not easy easy leaving GTF and Brett out obviously. Or Dobbie. But Bowler and Anderson have been excellent. And Husband, Keogh and Dougall wouldn't be far off making the team.

I'm not sure we would have coped in 2010 with all the injuries we've had this season. DJ and Charlie would make a big difference to the current side I reckon. The rest is pretty interchangeable.

Accepted its opinions; mine would have Gilks over Grimshaw, Southern over Stewart and GTF over Keshi. Mainly due to the length of time the ‘2010’ players showed their Championship quality. But the great thing- as you say - is that it’s interchangeable and the current crop wouldn’t look out of place.

Interesting stuff, what is the school of thought then on how the competitiveness of the league compares?

Does the fact we had less points but were just outside the play offs mean the league is more competitive now? Or just that there is a greater points disparity i.e the clubs at the bottom of the table are worse this time around therefore the clubs at the top have amassed more, basically meaning it's less competitive across the table but more so at the top..

It is really hard to compare because the ones that you have chosen from the class of 2010 because of how well they then performed in the Premier League

Of the current crop some will make the step up, others won’t so it is really hard to compare

Still fun though

as much as i think Keshi is a very good player and will get better, there is no way I could put him in over GTF.

Gilks
Coleman Baptiste Evatt Crainey
Adam Southern Vaughan
GTF DJ Brett

TBH I doubt any of the present squad would get n the Prem team, they were just special.
Maybe Bowler on the bench, no way would he get in over GTF.

Yes i appreciate people will make different calls on individuals but most if it is marginal I think. I disagree with people who say the 2010 team was far better and none of the current team would get in. This team is actually a point better off, as the OP says, for one thing. My opinion is that if you dropped DJ and Charlie into this side it would be as good. And I think people under rate Keshi, he's a wonderful player in my opinion. As was GTF. As is Bowler. Fine margins.

Given the performances of some of the officials we’ve had this season I think that they will decide who they want or don’t want in the play-offs.

For starting elevens I think you could make a case for a vastly improving Marv over Baptiste. Baptiste was prone to a good few errors. I'd find it impossible to leave Bowler out too. Sacrilege I know, but him over Brett. Technically he's miles better than Brett.

Not that it makes him a bad player but Marvin has made errors too. Both him and Baps have been among the best value signings we’ve ever made.

I think we're doing really well but I'd pick the 2009/10 team all day long with the exception of the two centre backs: I'd put Ekpiteta and Husband straight in there.
