4th Test England v Australia Official Thread

It’s not looking good for 20togo to go and see any play today….water collecting on the outfield and still raining hard.

England should have declared a bit earlier in my opinion - going to be a tough ask to get rid of six wickets with not much play .

Actually looking like there might be some play between 2 and 4, if they can clean the ground up, which shouldn't be a problem.

What I don’t get is…..

I appreciate it’s raining, but why not start clearing water now - get the super soakers out etc???
Probably because it's not necessary as they'd do the same cleaning up to get the ground ready once its stopped raining and deemed playable. Also all the covers probably stretch to maybe 40% of the area.

Surely it’s about time in test match cricket if they see a day possibly a day and a half is going to be lost to rain they should start earlier at 10am even play later by an hour at the end of the day?
That’s what I said when I was there on Wednesday. Lovely weather, great light and they go off at 6.30pm. They knew the forecast - get some extra play in.

Negative would be - a long day for the players.

This is where cricket fails - too rigid in their views and archaic rules.

That'd be crazy, the idea is to sop up the water not go around with massive water pistols making it worse.
If you are going to be a smarty pants you should really know there are systems that do it while it’s raining 👍

Yes called a supersopper
That’s not a super scooper!!

Loads of places have it - it sucks the rain out of all the turf from underneath faster than it can rain.

It was first used in the 2014 Football World.Cup - Wembley have some form of it and at least one cricket stadium does.

It allows for pretty much instant play as soon as it stops raining.

Judging by that photo on the BBC sport update, I’d say zero chance of play today. Followed by a virtual washout tomorrow. Just enough time for the Aussie tail to dig in and time waste 🤬

Im fully versed on cricket and the facilities they have to prepare the grounds I was merely pointed out that you, obviously mistakenly put Super soaker which is a make of water pistol, but it doesn't matter I was merely being facetious.

Longer days tagged on at the end aren't good. The psychological impact of adding at the end of the day over the beginning I reckon is too much- tiredness and concentration suffers.

I said the other day that if IF the forecast is for a washout one day, then a 10.30 start and perhaps a 6.30 finish (even if overs completed). If the weather fears were unfounded and over rate allows adjust the time on the 5th day.

I would prefer a reserve day though.

Forecast is absolutely shocking I think it is pure optimism that there will be any more play, a real shame.
Met office suggesting it will stay dry for the next couple of hours with at least a fair chance we get even longer. Just checked and in the last few minutes it is showing better signs for tomorrow afternoon too which is positive. Has rain only at a 30-40% chance from 3pm currently. There's definitely a chance we get real overs in.

Lancs match has been drawn while teams down south Surrey & Essex win.

Unfortunately it's the same old story.

Weather forecasts arent great , I was keeping an eye on met office yesterday whilst I was at OT and it must have changed about 7 times during the day and was never accurate compared to real time conditions. I expect it to change a fair bit before tomorrow too. We can but hope

Certainly not perfect by any means especially when we only really care about one tiny spot at a short window of time, but clearly it's more than just pure optimism, there's a very real chance at some play. Met office has been bang on so far today.

Quite a bit I guess, but I do not know - but how much do you lose when you don't play the big games?

It is a balance.
The last test drawn at OT was 2013, and it's doubtful that the system would've made a difference then or now, so I don't think the cost benefit is there.

Can't believe we actually have cricket today. Damp ball not great for us but let's hope we make inroads

Things really not going our way. With the added pain of having to listen to Bairstow wittering awry behind the sticks. These two have been in no trouble whatsoever yet these umpires stop us using pace. What a load of old shite that decision is.

Not really into my cricket but got this on in the background.

There just seems no urgency from England. Expected them to be attacking / tacking a few risks.

They can’t use the fast bowlers because of bad light so it’s rather made it a dull affair now.

Has to be said
Good close catch by Bairstow

Jeez we needed that, shouldn't have needed a review though.

Edit, Ball starting to do a bit for both spinners now
