5th TEST

The funny thing is we've not got the Ashes in men or womens cricket but been the best side in both cases during the summer.

It goes to show how really tough opponents these Aussies are, they win even when they don't particularly deserve to win. 😩

They are a tough team but it’s the cheating I don’t like 🥴

It is. The Hundred is like a test series all in 200 balls only it's done in 3 hours without it being a draw. Ace.
It's been an absolute disaster hence them scrapping it.

They should have franchised the 20/20 stuff like it's done with the big bash. But as per usual the ECB miles off of the pace.

No one wanted another short format at all. It'll be gone with 2-3 years at the rate it is. Couldn't even tell you when it starts. Zero marketing this summer for it.

2025 I've read is it's last outing. They've failed to sell it on to anyone. Basically it was an attempt to rectify the mistake they made with the T20.

Which begs the question as to why cricket has to shut down for a month to accommodate a known failure?

It really doesn't matter what the cricket authorities do, whether it's test cricket or boiling an egg- the f it up every time.

Don't always get what you deserve in sport RB☹️

Selection issues apart and all other things being equal, the worst decision in the series for me was to declare on the first day of the series when we could have gone on to bat Australia out of that game. It may work against a lesser test team but as we have seen, this is Australia, who will fight to the last man and have quality throughout their side. If we hadn't lost that game we would have the Ashes now.

Bad selection decisions;
Woakes not played in the first test
Playing Anderson ahead of Tongue in the last two games
Foakes obvs.

But all in all a fantastic series

Broad, I wish he would play on, what a guy
Moeen Ali is a hero, put himself in harms way by volunteering to bat at 3 and stepped up
Maybe it's time for Anderson to step down.

All in all Great cricket - you cannot beat the test match format

Give Broad credit for retiring at the top rather than ploughing on perhaps not playing up to his top level. Also he wants to spend time with the family rather than a winter tour to India. He could be a ferrific ambassador for Notts CC

I actually agree.

I think Jimmy should do the same, walk away whilst on a high, he's 41 now FFS and has been an absolute legend, this series has shown he's a shadow of his former self and although they will be so hard to replace, time waits for no man.

I think he will, and if he doesn’t they might not pick him for India or offer him another central contract anyway.
He is likely to be the top wicket taker among pace bowlers in tests perhaps for ever now Broad has retired.
He might just still have his heart set on getting over 700 wickets though?

yeah perhaps about right. Couple of observations.Bairstow has dropped way more than Carey but expect his batting average to be better. Noticeable though how they have to play one player out of the position he has come in at all series. Smith at 3 rather than Labuschange who's come in at 3 all series.

First reaction was surely that's biased towards England having 8 of 11 in a very close series but going through each one can't really argue it. Cummins got plenty of wickets but had a poor bowling average and got hit all around the ground. I would give an honourable mention to Mitch Marsh who had a big impact for them coming in and averaging 50, could argue him over Harry Brook perhaps.

Edit - Steve Smith had a poor series, you could I suppose more easily say if Marsh is replacing anyone it's him and not Brook

I reckon it's about right . . . Cummins is clearly a top class bowler but faded away and his captaincy was pretty weak for an Aussie.

Eight out of the eleven were English? If you told me that at the start of the series I'd think it would be impossible for us not to win the Ashes.

Brook and Bairstow don't make it for me. Brook is really exciting but still WIP. Bairstow, well it's all been said really. If he is as good as he thinks he is we would have won 10 nil. The cheating cherub gets ahead of him based on runs saved through catches, byes avoided etc. Smith makes it despite by his standards having a mediocre series.

Some of those choices were for players not necessarily playing for their teams. Bairstow most outstanding newcomer to Australian cricket. The Sydney Times touting him as the next captain.
