After Life 3

I've always avoided Ricky Gervais stuff for obvious reasons! But I might give this a go, sounds an interesting concept. I had a similar moment!

Watched the first episode of series 3 on Saturday about 8pm and had finished the series before I went to bed. Brilliant and very moving, particularly the scene in the last episode mentioned above 😢

I disliked him too. Not an office fan and I thought that Idiot Abroad stuff was the most overrated shite in the history of Television.

This series is genius, I'm jealous you've got 3 seasons to watch. Only 30 mins an episode. And if you don't laugh when he speaks to a fat kid in the school play ground then it's not for you.

All 3 series have been brilliant.
Gervais doesn't go down the obvious shmaltzy path of Disney happy endings or make it cringeworthy for the sake of getting laughs.
There were parts that made no sense (The swearing)but once you see (or don't see) the end...it makes you think....... and that's the genius.
Who would have thought the word C##t could be defined so perfectly..

I actually turned it off in the last scene at the park as he walked away.......
Only for someone to say next day.....did you see.......when.....and then.....what did you think...?

I completely missed it, so had to go back and watch it.........absolutely balled my eyes out....Storytelling at it's best

I really enjoyed it and can take or leave Gervais normally, I had something in my eye a few times, especially in season 2 when he's explaining how he got to see his Dad every day and it was all fine (trying to avoid spoilers there).

Enjoyed the first two series, found the last to be awful.

The 'comedy' was different ways to say the word '**'. A bit playground really.

Not groundbreaking but possibly designed to make you think about your own life but then that's what series 1 and 2 were about so we've not really progressed.
I think the over use of c**t is because Tony decided to tell everyone exactly what he's thinking all the time and he thinks most people are c**ts.

We watched all of them last night from teatime on wards - I enjoyed it, although Brian's graphic description of his ex-wife's 'odour' problems got a bit close to the bone. Made my eyes fill up a few times , dogs, kids and the daftness of life and death do that.
Great bit with cars not stopping at zebra crossings, and him scattering his dad's ashes made us laugh 👍

I adore his work so my view is subjective but Afterlife is jaw-droppingly good. I cannot compare it to anything else I've seen.

I'm still relatively young so have little experience of grief but it must be so relatable and pertinent to those who've suffered a big loss or with depression generally.

Add to that the depth of characters and humour, it really is in a class of its own.

I never got Gervais at all and especially the office, however watched it again recently and I’m now obsessed, Absolute genius. I enjoyed derek as well, afterlife is so bitter sweet amazingly funny and heartbreaking all in one go. Have to admit me and my wife were absolutely bawling during the last two episodes, I tried to keep it in but it got more and more heartbreaking the more it went on. So emotional and can’t help but think I’d be exactly the same if I lost my wife

I enjoyed series 1 & 2 but to be honest I found the first couple of episodes of series 3 a bit 'samey, and a bi self indulgent

Starts with him watching a video of him and his wife, get up and feed the dog. Go to work where people try to be nice to him but he insists on being horrible. Go and do an interview with increasingly whacky people. Use some foul and quite offensive language to bring in even more whacky people, end episode by him crying in bed watching a video of him and his wife gain.

It did get better towards the end though, and the last episode was very good

yep, binge watched all S3 last night. The first two series were brilliant but thought he went too far with the crudeness in S3 although did redeem it with the last episode though. Thought it was maybe deliberate as a fuck you to the viewing public who like the sentimentality of it and was saying "that's it" - no more afterlife.

Really enjoyed all 3 seasons...got to say, the scene with his brother-in-law in the hospital bed is so funny along with how he keeps twatting him at any sport they play had me in stitches.

I was in tears last few episodes, really pulls your strings and makes you think about appreciating what you have even more.

One thing I am gonna do is take more Videos of my other half and other family members so that if the worse was to happen, I could relive the moment rather than just trying to remember from a picture.

It's so sad to think that this could be you at any point over the next few years and how badly it must affect you 😪

Watched the first 2 series and thought they were exceptional.

Funny, intelligent and true to life with quality acting.

Not going to watch the 3rd series however as I don’t like getting too upset and after reading all the reviews above I daren‘t chance it 🥴

Don't worry, the dog doesn't die. Seriously, well worth watching, made me smile a lot and the final episode is absolute gold. 👍🏼

Office was seminal, spawning other "mockumentaries".
RG spoke at length about comedies running out of steam.
After Life 3, in my opinion, endorses that view.
All subjective, though and pleased some enjoyed it.

Yep, it’s worth watching Lala👍

Just finished series 1&2 on the back of some of the comments on here.
They make you laugh, cry and contemplate (the episodes, not the comments 😁)
Will be watching series 3 next week 👍🏻

1st series was fantastic, wished he’d not done the second one after watching it, there was no need. Still, I’ll prob watch the third at some point.

Just watched series 1&2 clever writing with equal laughter and emotional sadness in large supplies.

Did series 3 this morning couldn't be bothered waiting til next week!!
All in all a good program.
Every actor played great characters and great morals intertwined within the storyline. 👍🏻

I've watched all three series in 3 days. For me it's a mix of the sublime and the ridiculous. Some great characters and some very weak ones. Some excellent dialogue and some shit dialogue. Some good laughs, some touching moments and some cringe moments. Overly sentimental probably, but some good stuff in there. I didn't cry once or come close tbh, but I'm a hard bitten old git whose seen it all first hand. I also thought that the usual thing happened where the first series was very good, second series good and third series not so good.

I've never been a Gervais fan, I guess cos he seems so insecure and immature and needy and coarse and crass and overtly attention seeking, and this series seems to be an effort to make people like him. And I guess I like him a bit more but I'm still a bit cynical. It's like he's saying "please like me, I'm just a big soppy misanthrope. Dogs understand me better than humans do."

I don't hate him, he's a flawed genius I guess, and I enjoyed a lot of After Life. Diane Morgan, Joe Wilkinson, Roxy, Penelope Thingy. And others. A real mix.

I watched series 3 and thought it went backwards (ie) he was pretty happy at the end of series 2 but they had to revert to him being more unhappy and being nasty to people again to give series 3 a foundation.

I didn’t find anything new in it, found some of the storylines similar to series 2 and albeit it was mildly and gently enjoyable I thought it should have been left at 2 series tbh

I’m a huge Gervais fan, the office is my favourite thing ever huge fan of that, extras is brilliant as is Derek, Cemetry Junction, idiot abroad. But afterlife is different init, the first two seasons were ok, the odd funny moment with a lot of sentimentality going on but series three had me in stitches from about episode 3 onwards.

I agree with what some have already said the first couple of episodes were a bit slow to get going but from episode 3 onwards it was so so funny, the scene with big Keith from the Office talking about being barred from the all you can eat buffet and then saying ‘I don’t work I had to quit to claim disability benefit’ and tony goes ‘oh sorry do you mind if I ask what’s wrong with you’ for the guy to go ‘we’ll look at me, I’m completely fcuked’ 😂😂😂 absolutely amazing aha comedy gold

He was pretty happy at the end of season 2?

He was literally about to kill himself while crying on the sofa before he was interrupted by the door.

I found series 3 to be far more sad than funny, for most of the characters, but I suppose that was the point.
Really liked the dog though. She was very sensitive to what was going on with the main character, and that extended to Ricky Gervais in real life when they appeared on the One Show (she cried when he spoke about wanting to die before his partner)

He’d done a lot of good deeds …just like he does at end of series 3

I AIN‘T debating you on it Lytham…..I found it disappointing

but if you thought it was good then that is a good thing

You need to chance it Lala I’m thinking the same way as you as believe it or not (going off your posts I’ve read over the years)
We have a lot in common regarding let’s say experiences, have a laugh have a cry then a laugh & a cry etc etc etc we can’t not watch it, I certainly won’t be having a drink when I do watch it as Alchol tends to amplify the emotions up or down depending

Interesting that folk are debating this After Life on here.

Plenty chat on Twitter today about binge watching etc, etc and I've never seen one of them.

I loved the Office, I don't know if that makes a difference but I might give this After Life a try at some point.
