Almost completely caused by humans

Nope, more bullshit. I made the point first about what I'd be telling my grandkids. That was MY point, nothing else. Not my problem you're now back tracking to talk about my grandkids life time. And yet here I am being part of the problem whilst reading all these threads about people going on holidays touring around Scotland. And another thread on camper vans v motor homes. Why not preach to them about giving up their holidays to think of the planet and the climate or is it alright for them to do that?.
In other words spare me your sanctimonious claptrap.

I think the problem here is that I am taking a broad view of the problem, as other posters have. We think there is a huge problem that will need a concerted response from lots of people to tackle it. If that is being sanctimonious, well, there you go. I'm guilty.

You don't seem to be able to see beyond your next family holiday, or the need you have to win some minor battle of words on a. football message board. And I don't understand why you have to take personal offence when people make general posts about how we ALL behave. It comes across as a bit sad, and a bit inadequate. Which is a shame.

I'll tell you what. I'M 67 and as such I've been able to drive a car for over 50 years. Now, I've never owned or driven a car in all those fifty years so think of all those emissions I've saved the planet by not doing so. So if you want to interpret that as doing my bit and congratulate me for it then that's good. Think that stands me in good credit. On the other hand all those on here talking the talk will continue to motor all over the place around the country without giving the planet a second thought. How about them doing their bit rather just talking eh?
20togo walking the walk whilst others merely talk.

I was simply quoting a short list of very obvious examples where individuals can make CO2 savings to counterbalance the ridiculous “Dave decided to drink milk instead of his usual coffee” argument…I’d have thought it obvious that the list wasn’t intended to be exhaustive…. So why are you choosing to play silly games and pretend that was what I intended?

As for ‘impractical’… I suggest that mass migration and the devastating long term effects of worsening climate change might be a tad more ‘inconvenient’….. Jeez, if ‘inconvenience’ is genuinely intended to be a realistic counter-argument we really are fecked!!

You’re right, you are wasting your time, because despite you consistently demanding supporting evidence from all and sundry, when it suits, you have failed spectacularly to provide anything of substance to back up your flimsy argument… The best you can do is link a fictional article extracted from a journo’s book.

Please share the basis for your 0.03% easy calculation.

EDIT: Have you also considered the Irony of pointing the finger at China, when we and everyone else import all manner of garbage from them.
"As for ‘impractical’… I suggest that mass migration and the devastating long term effects of worsening climate change might be a tad more ‘inconvenient’….. Jeez, if ‘inconvenience’ is genuinely intended to be a realistic counter-argument we really are fecked!!" That's the big problem BFC....................inconvenient is the excuse for a lot of people. Seems they'd rather damage their grandchildren's health and damage the planet rather than be inconvenienced, I've had this thrown at me a number of times over the years.

keep on saying people on here talk the talk but let's here what you are all actually doing yourselves!

Just pointing out that of all the people only "talking the talk", you are doing as much talking as anyone.
yeah but as I point out above in a reply to you I've never driven a car in over fifty years. Think that stands me in good stead compared to the likes of some on here. Feel free to prove otherwise or deflect.

😂 I haven’t read the whole thread but a quick jump from beginning to end suggests…

We start with the planet is dying……

And end up with 20s displaying his Uber Climate Change Activist Credentials…..to go with his Uber Football Supporter Credentials.

I didn't respond because I thought is was some kind of joke post. This was a good and interesting thread, until you came along and wrecked it.

If you want to tag me with that then no problem. Don't agree myself but hey who cares.

Think that if you want doesn't bother me. But hey deflect away from my question, that's fine too. But it wasn't me who said we need to take individual responsibility was it? I've simply asked how are people doing that.

And modest as well!!!

Speechless with admiration at the all round awesomeness. 😌
thanks. You'll be pleased to know i hold you in no such high esteem. But hey, you won't be bothered.
Anyway, enjoy your trip up this saturday. Hope they play as well as they did last night.

....and the Chinese are planning another 184 coal powered stations to add to the 1,082 already in use. They have more in use than every body else on the planet. We have 3. U.S of A has 247 but are decreasing usage and getting rid.
Paris agreement waste of time unless China not only agrees but actually complies. They wont.
So not only are the Chinese ** up the planet faster than any other country but will get away with it. Its what they do.

yet the sanctimonious on AVFTT tell us that we've got to take individual responsibility. In a world of nearly 8 billion where most of them couldn't give a toss or can't do anything about it. But hey life goes on! Ooops....

Can't possibly be miserable when I disagree with all the shiite you come out with. It makes me happy, you dope. It makes me laugh when you say you ignore me but you don't half bite every rime I comment on this side of the forum. And you think it's the other way round. Haha..
Haha?

What a ** knobhead.

That is because AVFTT has some of the greatest thinkers ever to grace our planet. It also has some vociferous differences of opnion. That is good. That is right. I disagree with Cats over a lot of his/her opinions - he/she may label me a conspiracy theorist regarding the origin of covid but I will defend her/his position to question my opinion.

You could either shake your head at this thread, or just gawp in wonder at the array of knowledge, insight, hubris, bitterness and downright bonkersness of the AVFTT online community 🏝️ 😂🛸
I’m on the gawp with this one, a spectacular thread with most of the ‘big hitters’ involved, tapping away furiously at times! Shame Cats not stepped up to the keyboard as 20’s is in rampant form! 🤣

Cat is wise to stay away.

I’m told the “I could have driven a car for the last 50 years but chose not to. What have you 👀 down to save the planet?” Tee shirts and shorts are being printed and sold like hot cakes.

Even Greta can’t compete with that !!!

Don't give up just yet, the great man could still be drawn in.

20’s a true Soothsayer!

Please send links where I can buy this t shirt. I will pass on the shorts.

Like some on here, I have never owned a car, I use public transport and cycle to work before I retired. I cycled simply because I enjoyed it and very often took a 20-30 mile ride home on a Friday rather than take the short 5-mile route. But like you say how many are just talking and quite happily throw their litter out of their car window for one example whilst criticising all the holidaymakers for littering the promenade?

Come on 20, there's nothing sanctimonious about wanting to correct the damage the human race has done. I don't know where you live but in my area, the simple restrictions on car use during the first lockdown made one hell of an improvement in the environment so it proved to me there is a lot we can do as individuals that make a difference.

That's good to know. Please donate all my copyright royalties to Emma Thompson so she can fly first class to her next Extinction Rebellion protest..

Indeed it did Eagle but life goes on and people need to get back to doing things they used to do. Whether you like it or not, a car is essential to so many peoples lives these days. We can't put on hold getting on with our lives for the sake of adding a few extra days to the planets life which no doubt is countless centuries away. And all that is on the premise that some other major disaster doesn't strike the planet first. You acknowledge it's people talking the talk which is absolutely all it is. Big game tomorrow at Bloomfield Rd.How many will be travelling to the game by car from various parts of the country? If people are so serious about doing something then how about not bother going? But nah, they won't do that will they because it doesn't suit! Why? Because life goes on, that's why and going to football matches is part of their lives.

Not read all the comments but here are my thoughts for what they are worth.

I was a bit sceptical about global warming when I was at school. It’s a known fact from arctic ice core samples that Earth has warmed up / cooled down for millions of years, long before human industrial interference. But everything we’ve seen recently points to human interference on a global scale.
Short term - that could mean flooding / droughts & fires / more extreme weather events & storms.
Long term - some areas could become uninhabitable. Potential for famine. Category 6 storms.
Future scenario - you only have to read about Mercury and Venus, our nearest planetary neighbour and hottest planet in the solar system to understand what happens when a runaway greenhouse effect takes hold.

I think it’s easy to blame motorists. Almost a convenient tax. Who can dispute it when we need to save the planet? I’d rather see technology brought in to make petrol & diesel emissions cleaner.

What about improving traffic flow and solutions to ease congestion? The main focus recently has been pedestrian and cyclist safety. Traffic lights on roundabouts? What’s that all about? You only have to look locally. The A585 near Norcross. Constantly busy - has been crying out for a dual carriageway for years, but that would mean widening the bridge and spending money. So they are happy to see us queue. Even the much heralded bypass, 3 decades in the making, is a ridiculous piece of non planning. They are going to shut a perfectly good road, further up. And instead of the bypass coming out at the obvious point near the M55 junction, it exits a little further up the road on an already narrow, busy section. Genius. Blackpool Promenade: 2 lanes on both sides = no problem. Now we see huge queues of standing traffic, especially in peak periods, from the cenotaph all the way to the Pleasure Beach. A failed traffic experiment it will now cost too much to reverse.

Electric cars won’t be the answer. They are impractical for long journeys, take too long to charge, are too expensive to buy, the batteries contain precious metals in short supply. I question what the 2nd hand market looks like. What happens to the old batteries? What recycling is available? Why have the plugs not been standardised yet? And that’s not even touching on the fact the National Grid would fail. Are we going to build X number of power stations to cope with the huge demand? That would be the opposite of carbon neutral.
I expect to see hydrogen cars / cold fusion take over shortly. Why aren’t we all over that bloke who successfully produced strong energy results from compressed air in his shed experiments? Energy from fresh air. Wow. Miniaturise that into cars, etc.

Why is freight not moved more on the railways as it is in so many countries abroad? So many lorries running up & down the motorways that could & should be moved onto the rail network.
Could we expand the rail network again; reopen some of the old lines closed following the infamous 1960’s Beeching report.

Why is our public transport so expensive? Is it time they were Nationalised again - on a not for profit basis? They should be encouraging people to use it, not putting the fares up every 6 months.

Is the western world is at fault for sending so much of its manufacturing to China, India, Poland, Bangladesh, etc. Cheaply made products in countries with scant regard for the environment and unlikely to change that anytime soon. We should put a green tax all on such imports, so manufacturers will be made to consider cleaner alternatives.
Australia’s main energy comes from coal. A country where solar power would be off the chart, still relying on fossil fuels to drive the economy and power homes. Doesn’t get much mention, and it should.

There seems to be a bizarre U.K. obsession with wind farms. The things crop up everywhere. I can only assume some people have got very wealthy from it all. Still no sign of using the one constant daily form of U.K. energy: tidal energy. Where are the tidal barrages in Morecambe Bay, etc? Instead we get wind farms, almost blocking the shipping lanes.
The best form of renewable energy is probably a mix of various solutions.
There was a suggestion we were going to go bold on engineering projects to revitalise the economy. Some of these projects would be ideal and a massive boost towards the provision of clean energy.
