Anyone else doing Dry Jan?

About 6 years for me. it was seriously messing with my mental health as I used it to deal with things I should have been dealing with in a stronger more responsible way.
I don’t miss it one bit. I usually have one Irish Coffee at Christmas but didn’t get around to that in the end this year as I was too busy and it obviously wasn’t a priority.

Like many can’t see the point in quitting I can’t see the point in drinking now, can’t see it at all.

Yes, things can happen for a reason and if you’re seeing a reason then go for it 👍 It works wonders for both the mental and physical self.

Good luck indeed 👍
Thats fantastic I would absolutely give my right arm to get like that one day full credit to you.

Thank you so much 🍊🍊

Im trying permanently, finding it very difficult at night getting to sleep & heart palpitations at night

Im fine during the day/evening
Hi, just read your post…I thought perhaps you could contact your GP to discuss the heart palpitations. Unfortunately, prolonged excessive alcohol overuse can result in a condition called Atrial Fibrillation which causes an irregular heartbeat (sometimes like a fluttering feeling) and it can be worse at nighttime. The GP should request an ECG/telemetry which would be used to diagnose it. Although I don’t want to be a scaremonger (or appear over dramatic) I thought it would be remiss of me if I didn’t mention it because AF can lead to stroke (amongst other things) which is exactly what happened to my brother. He didn’t tell me he’d been having palpitations, otherwise I would have made him get checked out. It’s treatable with medication… Hope you don’t mind me telling you this …

I think its a case of withdrawal symptoms my body been so used to having drink every night at the same time too.

The deaths certainly didn’t help matters either, i will definitely have a look online at that and thank you i do appreciate it
I know that regular daily exercise and fresh air can help people who are struggling to sleep.
Proven to be beneficial to mental health as well.
These modern smart watches can track your sleep patterns and ECG. Can indicate if you have any medical problems.

I appreciate you telling me, if it doesn’t ease by the end of the week ill take a trip to my GP just to be on the safe side, thank you

Breaking any drug addiction can be tough and with alcohol the crutch of an alcohol free or low alcohol option can help with the mental addiction.

Personally though, I’d consult with your GP first as immediate cessation can cause some serious side effects… You may need to stop gradually.👍
That’s where the heroin comes in handy 👍

This is what happened to me over a year ago now I was really struggling with my breathing an ambulance come to collect me I was 160 on the Ecg I’d only been sat down watching tele, I spent 2 days in hospital and had heart scans after that they said it was AF and they put me on bisopralol and some other drug beginning with r. This time last year they told me I’d be on them permanently. I quit drink and I was off them by February and off gastro restraint tablets I’ll be 1 year clean on Thursday and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done I never crave alcohol now I don’t think I’ll bother ever again.

Brilliant, the outcome anyway.
Well done you 💪💪👍

Ramipril perhaps? I’m so glad to hear about your recovery…what a tremendous achievement!! People often don’t think about the ramifications of drinking too much until they have to for whatever reason. Anyway, I’mdelighted that you’re feeling much better now 😬😬

I'm giving it another go.

I started last year on New Years day with an aim to do just January, but at the end of the month, I found myself feeling guilty that I'd ruin all the effort by starting on the booze again. So, I did another month, and then another month, and ended up drink-free until the end of June.
After that, I really only had the odd social drink and never more than a couple in one day, including this Christmas and New Year.

So, here we are again, back to trying to be fully dry for January and I'll see where it goes........

I will do, thanks mate UTMP
You can buy blood pressure monitors for about £25 they sell them on eBay to keep an eye on things

Thank you 😁 I forget one was to slow my heart rate the other was for my blood pressure. I was a binge drinker never thought I had a problem because I could quit easy for 2 months at a time but I went mad on it when I returned to it it used to make me very poorly and depressed.

I'm doing dry January again, find it quite therapeutic after over indulging for 3 weeks, weather tends to be dryer so get out for a few long walks.
Don't bother with the 0° crap and stay away from pubs and restaurants until February.

No, pubs like The No 10, JDs, Cask and other micro pubs need all the help they can get !
Pubs don't help themselves in this respect. Alcohol-free sales are rising, but go into most pubs and ask for alcohol-free and all they can offer is Heineken Zero. Most alcohol-free drinkers are likely to be with normal drinkers and it's not as if it is any cheaper. Considering the range of alcohol-free and low-alcohol beers, lagers, ciders (my favourite), wines available (check out Dry Drinker ), this makes no sense. I gave up alcohol a few years back for AF medication reasons but there are times when I fancy a nice glass of wine.

Thanks for the Dry Drinker link. What 0% wines do you recommend? I've only ever sampled a couple and thought they were both awful.

But - at least until February - it would be good to know that there were some red or white alternatives that are actually enjoyable in their own right.

I agree about wine, although I bought a selection of sparkling wine for Christmas (La Gioiosa Sparkling Wine and Oddbird Spumante) which went down well. I go for beers and ciders, and have got a taste for Ollenaut Kaineken Smoked Porter.

Wow overkill, they were only talking about dry Jan and you went full on AA, common!

...and so it continues!

Quite enjoying not boozing and trying loads of non-alcoholic beers, but the wines are terrible.

Managed to source a case of Guinness Zero here in Singapore, and I have to say it's not bad 👍👍

Anyone else still doing it?

I'm doing it flexitarian-style, i.e. more days dry than not. The range of decent 0% beers has definitely broadened in the last year or two and that's a big step forward. I'd still like to find a zero wine that was even remotely drinkable -as S1 says above, I'm sceptical that one exists. The Independent had an article on it but most of their recommendations were sparkling wines. They did rave about a couple of reds but when I tried to find them online they were all sold out. I'll try to find the article again.

Edit to add the Indy article:

Will have a look for those later - thanks 👍

I have bought c20 different alcohol free beers and am spending the day trying them in front of the cricket 👍
