I saw his documentary and was amazed by his vocal prowess. I think all the pop stuff and image overshadowed this. Prince was in the same category.George Michael for me.

Maybe that was true in 1960! Chris Cornell, Mike Patton, Damon Albarn just to name a few with a 3 octave rangeRoy Orbison - the only rock/ballad singer known to have a 3 octave range . Genius .
If you listen to some of his recordings, he actually sings out of key on occasions. For me, not the best vocalist by a long stretch, but a good entertainer.It's Mercury by a country mile whether you like the songs or not.
Everything else will just be bands/ vocalists you like.
