Blackpool v Hull City Official Matchinght Thread 19.10.22

Blackpool manager Michael Appleton:

"It's a shame, but I thought the game on Saturday took a lot out of the players, certainly from an energy point of view.

"A lot of things went against us, and fair play to Hull, I thought they showed a lot of character.

"The killer blow was the second Hull goal. They got it just before half-time, and that seemed to knock the stuffing out of some of our lads. I feel sorry for some of them - I just wanted a result from somewhere tonight, but it's not happened."

Just watched the highlights again and whilst their second goal was a great hit four of our guys just stood around and made no attempt to close him down and the same with their third. Also we seem very shaky on defending corners. These are things that need sorting out on the training ground.

My take on last night.

Maxwell can’t be blamed for the second or third. He seemed to do as well as he could for the first but it wasn’t quite enough. He didn’t have a lot else to do all game as most Hull chances were off target. His distribution was OK, albeit slow at times, but I don’t blame him for that, I instead blame the lack of movement in the midfield and defence.

Defensively we looked terrible. Far too slow to close down, getting pulled out of position all over the place. Passing it around in triangles when being pressed and most frustratingly of all passing it backwards and sideways when chasing a game. It was made abundantly clear how important pacey full backs are to our tactics as without them we just don’t look threatening. Williams doesn’t even look like a footballer. Looks like he won a competition to train with the team and somehow ended up in the squad. Send him back to Liverpool ASAP. Connolly was really poor last night. His passing was atrocious, he got pulled out of position time after time and failed to impact the game beyond the half way line - which is unlike him. Garbutt is supposed to be able to play anywhere on the left. That didn’t look the case last night. Maybe he needs games but he was off the pace and worryingly his range of passing was well off too. Thornily was OK. That’s about it.

Midfield - Patino was off his game with his passing last night - but he’s 19 so he’s going to blow hot and cold. I like how he’s tenacious when he’s not on the ball but I feel he doesn’t make enough forward runs needed to drag the whole team up the pitch. Wright just didn’t impact the game at all. He really needs to develop some relationships with the wingers as he ends up occupying the same spaces and therefore limits his ability to impact the game and spread the ball around. Dougall was ok in the first half and scored a good goal but went AWOL in the second half. Bridcutt struggled to influence the game after coming on - it seems like the damage was already done mentally as I hoped he would have got a reaction from his teammates and forced everyone to push up.

Corbineau- fantastic first 45, anonymous second 45. Tries too much at times and loses the ball cheaply. Reminds me of Bowler and definitely deserves a role in the matchday squad. Perhaps not a starter yet though.

Yates - created a lot in the first 45 and links up well with his teammates. The number of runs he makes that no-one picks out must frustrate him something silly. He clearly tired in the second half and also got absolutely zero service.

Madine - a few moments early on but generally off the pace and pretty much anonymous thereafter.

Not even sure anyone else is worth mentioning.

The lack of tempo, movement and pressing was unforgivable. Hull were there for the taking and even at half time despite thinking we’d been poor I thought we’d up our game and could get the 3 points. Somehow we put in an even worse performance.

Appleton is 100% to blame. He’s the one responsible for lighting a fire in the bellies of those players and getting 100% commitment from minute 1 to the final whistle. Too many times this season we’re only getting 45 minute performances. It’s criminal when we don’t even get that like last night. Being beaten by a better team, by moments of quality and by individual mistakes I’m absolutely ok with. Being beaten without putting up a fight - which is what I saw last night - is not acceptable.

He knows we’re down to bare bones, he knows the players are tired - why are we not blooding youth ? Surely fresh legs and fearlessness is exactly what we need in games like last night. If players aren’t fit bring in players that are.

Yeh maxwell asked what he was doing booting it when we were 3-1 down which was fair. He then gave maxwell an ear full which was bang out of order.
He didn't give maxwell any abuse, he was obviously frustrated by our shocking performance and asked Maxy something along the lines of "Do you think this is acceptable?" And "Tell the players then" when Maxy said it wasn't.

Gave a thumbs up at the end and no doubt it was out of frustration, no abuse thrown at all, who even was the captain by the way? Didn't hear a single shout of man on, or anything of that nature yesterday?

I’m quietly confident the Nobbers are going to receive a good old fashioned lashing on Saturday. Bloomers needs to be a cauldron of Tangerine fire and brimstone. Let no Pool fan leave without a hoarse voice. 😤 Grrr! Bring it on.

People get so incredibly wound up about us playing PNE .Personally I just regard it as another game ok with a bit of extra local rivalry but no big deal, never has been all my life for me even watching Matthews and Finney although that did give it quality that has long since departed from the fixture..

Are there any others on here who share my view on this or am I a lone voice crying in the wilderness?

you really are weird. Think for a moment about what you are saying. Clearly you're not capable of understanding the emotions of what playing against local rivals means. Living in Sheffield do you think when those teams meet it's just another game? Same pretty much throughout the rest of the country. Burnley/ Blackburn,Derby/Forest, Brum/Villa, City/United,Arsenal/Spurs, the list is endless.
