Blackpool v Hull City Official Matchinght Thread 19.10.22

That was pretty awful. We lacked any quality and didn't look like scoring. Hull fans will be thinking that we are relegation fodder. Need a much better performance at the weekend and points to go with it.

Feel sorry for Appleton to be honest. The players indiscipline, the officials, the FA and the injuries have all fucked him.

Down to the bare bones for PNE, they’ve got an extra days rest and we look knackered. Great away record against a poor home record, it doesn’t look good.

Not sure what he did wrong?
I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again but we need a taller goalkeeper. Any time opponents get a free kick or corner against us they look so dangerous because they can put it right on top of the keeper because he is too short to get it. It has cost us again today. Even if they don't score from it like they did today it puts us under unnecessary pressure.

That's 13 players who I consider to be good enough to be playing in a Championship side. 7 of that 13 are either injured or suspended and it means we have 11 players in the squad of 25 that are League 1 standard. Bridcutt may be, but he is injured and only came on because he had to. Poveday and Corbeanu? Are they good enough to be playing regularly in the Championship? I'm not sure.

9 of those 13 players we already had in and another 2 are loans. Thommo and Wright still have to convince us all that they are good enough, but I think they probably are.

If you can make any deductions, the recruitment team have fucked up badly ever since January this year. We actually had some money for players yet we failed to touch it and made pathetic bids and didn't back any up with proper wages. This is not Appleton's fault. If we have so many injuries and suspensions it's no surprise we got a beating tonight.

If we can play our best 11 players we are more than good enough to stay up, but our squad is not up to standard.

I try not to get get to carried away with a win nor overreact to a defeat, but that was awful. Lack of urgency all over the pitch, no one offering for the ball all night, Hull players in miles of space every time they were on the ball.

Just really really poor.

Went after the 3rd and home before full time. They don’t deserve the support after that…it’s a 2-way thing so I don’t feel
bad for walking out. Absolutely abysmal performance and zero commitment from virtually everyone.
Saturday is a big one and hopefully will force some players into showing some character. But that can’t just be for the big games….that’s the disappointment.

Form goes out the window in derbies

difficult to make a comment on that performance, after the last three games where we have gone out and made things happen, got on the front foot, we have played deep, passive and without any energy. this was one of those games where getting into Hull and they would have folded, they are not a good side.

we had a situation same as a couple of weeks ago where an opposition midfielder ran the show from an advanced position without any real pressure. Patino as good as he is has to be further forward. With Dougall further forward it needs someone with some bite, this is where i say Appleton got it all wrong again, Bridcut from the start and stop Hull from playing. Theo at best is an impact sub, because he doesn't press it left a space for hull to exploit coming out of defence down their left, Connolly again with no support in front of him was turned over way more often than he was against a better player in the previous two games.

I honestly thought we might have turned a corner from the last two games, but i watched the preview with appleton about 20mins before the game, which just seemed negative, you would have thought after Norwich, Watford and Sheffield and, the shit refs, wanky decisions et al, the players would have something of a siege mentality, and come out blazing but it was as passive as anything ive ever seen from a pool side.

Can’t agree with you their herts I’am afraid, I’d half that number straight away.
Your being far too kind.

Said it earlier. They didn’t come to attack (like Sheffield) so you’re not going to get many chances. Concede 2 goals and you’re not coming back from that without a match winner (that we sold)

He wasn’t at fault for any of the goals tonight.

Feel sorry for the squad tonight. 9 out injured or suspended. Madine Poveda Bridcutt carrying knocks( don’t think we will have Madine on Saturday) husband Garbutt not played for months and thrown in tonight. Williams just coming back from injury. Lads looked knackered that played Saturday
For those reasons I’m not going to be too harsh on tonight’s results

** Hell, I can't think that!!! It glaringly shows that the recruitment team have been the thorn in the side of the club. It's undeniable. They either need to pull their fingers out or pick up the P45's.

The last 3 games we have been able to put out basically our best 11, but we have nothing else and tonight showed that.

Its not that they didnt come to attack they arent very good at it, but we somehow managed to make them look good. I want to say bad day at the office and move on, but . . . . .

A bad day at the office for most of the team, but Dougall is moving to the 15-goal target.:)

Appleton is making the same mistake that Critch made at the start trying to play a 4-3-3 formation rather than
playing a system to the players that are available strengths.

Absolutely bang on the money 👍

Very simple really……we could have done without that game tonight.

Unfortunately you don’t get to pick and choose when you can play and if nothing else it highlights the lack of depth in the squad…that said we have so many injuries need suspensions. The World Cup break can’t come quick enough.

Quite the contrast compared to Saturday against Sheffield United.

The performance on Saturday showed gave me confidence, the lads on that field played there bloody hearts out and fought to the end.

The team effort, quality shown and overall performance on Saturday was without a doubt play off form.
The team effort, quality shown and overall performance tonight was without a doubt relegation form.

Today was absolutely diabolical and I'm duly unimpressed with what I saw tonight. Some of the lads who came in the squad today had the chance to show what they were about and that they deserved a place in the starting line up. Sadly they did not live up to this. Even witnessing some of the players giving a light jog back when the ball had been lost. That said we do have suspensions and injuries which was very apparent tonight.

Kenny's finish was a beauty and that was the highlight of the game and I thought the ref was decent aswell which was a pleasant change. Patino is also class on the ball, I just think we need to utilize him better.

I just really hope we don't witness the same against PNE.

Injuries and suspensions don’t help the available squad numbers though.

Did nothing. It was 🔔 end in the south who started it
When he kicked the ball back ,maxi said something and he asked maxi if he thought if was acceptible to not put the effort in by the team he said no its not then it got a little heated but at the end they gave the thumbs up to each other and said see you sat ,just a bit of frustration nothing else in it,just as you have an opinion aboutit and resort to a stupid name call

We need to stop making excuses about injuries, suspensions etc. The team we had out tonight ,should have been good enough to give a team that has lost 8 of it's last 10 games, some competition. Instead we made them look like Brazil 1970, unable to do basics like pass to a player in the same colour shirt or pick up a second ball.
Then to top it off, I get home and turn on the news to watch Tory bigwigs attending a champagne reception, as inflation hits double figures and people struggle to keep warm and eat.
What a f###ing day

Left with 5 mins to go, first time in as long as I can remember but that was shocking, wasn’t waiting around for every hull player to dive in the floor asking for the physio to come on.

Said on the radio that thornily was struggling with his calf at the end? We are fupped if he’s out as well for sat

That was utter rubbish tonight against a very poor team who were unfortunately too good for us tonight. It’s hard to believe where that level of performance came after the last four games but we were bad from back to front summed up by Corbeanu getting man of the match. We need to dust ourselves down and sort things out for Saturday otherwise we are in serious trouble.

No doubt it we are paying a terrible price for a shocking summer transfer window despite all the hot air, wind and bollocks spouted at last weeks SD Meeting in front of our 157 different fans groups!

Home and deflated. To boot, that wind was bloody freezing tonight at the ground.
Well at least there’ll be no complacency about Saturday now.

We really missed Marv

Completely agree that’s why we have a squad of 25 players but time and time again we’ve seen when we have to make changes half of the squad simply aren’t good enough for this league and I’am afraid that includes the manager.

Is that a career target??

He is well past 15 already in his career. Must be winding you up that Dougall is the most creative midfielder with assists and
the best with goals as well this season. If you look at Wright, Carey, and Patino how much have they contributed with goals and assists?

Dougall is by the far the best defensive midfielder as well unless Stewart is fit. Dougall isn't great at taking set pieces but must be better than the rest in training for Appleton to keep asking him to take them. As for Bridcutt just watch the playoff final again and see him against Dougall and Stewart and you will see he isn't as good.

Good luck to anyone trying to defend that. And it wasn't just injuries. Their second goal, while a great strike, occurred because most of our team were crowding around the area near the ball leaving a huge space completely free for him to have time to control, tee it up and strike it. You could organise schoolchildren better, and at no point in the entire game were any of our players given anything like that time on the ball. Third worst defence now, and that defence tonight that we struggled to create anything against - that's the worst defence by five clear goals. That's a worry.

Can someone tell me how you can have three centre mids on the pitch, and yet have moments when not one Blackpool player is in the centre of the pitch? Where do our midfielders disappear to in those moments? What are they actually doing? I still think we're too lightweight and inexperienced in that position. Patino has serious quality on the ball, but he isn't going to be able to play the sole protector of the defence in the championship. If we're not playing Bridcutt (which I get with his lack of match fitness), then I think we should be playing Carey instead of Wright, because I think Carey is much more likely to get stuck in and do some of the leg work.

Saturday needs a reaction from us, and compared to tonight, the whole team needs to grow a pair because we lost all the 50:50s tonight and that will be unforgivable on Saturday.

It was poor, but not abject as some suggest. Williams is a big downgrade on Marv, Garbutt and Husband haven't been on the pitch in aeons. With the same 11 as Sheffield we wouldn't have conceded the first 2 so softly, and Hull wouldn't have been able to sit back and park the bus. Shit night but I don't think we're in a rut.
They didn’t need to park the bus, they could have parked a dinky car in the goal and we still wouldn’t score.

just back, leaving after the third went in. Shocking performance pretty much from start to 80 mins when I left. We made them look a very good team which clearly they are not.
I was one of the many hundreds of others who left at the same time, could be even earlier Saturday.😉

At the end of your first paragraph you could have added the board as well.

Just a ‘touch’ of negativity on here tonight. (That’s putting it mildly) So, what we’ve experienced is a minor blip. What we watched earlier, was a depleted, knackered, battle-weary set of players. Come Saturday - the Tangerine army will be roaring a regenerated team on to victory. Albeit a narrow one. I really DO think so. 🤪

Hull certainly didn't park the bus, in fact they looked the side most likely to score, the one e think I couldn't understand was their stupid time wasting, they didn't have to, we were doing if for them twatting about at the back

Yeah I couldn't understand that as there was clearly more goals in it for them even at 2-1 up by pushing on with the same freedoms they were being afforded to move up the pitch. They gave it a good go to blast us away at the start of the second half and then I guess because they haven't won since god was a lad they just wanted to make sure they managed the game right.

Thought their tactics worked for them spot on. Though it will have been the easiest scouting mission of the season to put together a plan against our likely set up and with the players left to pick from.

Yeh maxwell asked what he was doing booting it when we were 3-1 down which was fair. He then gave maxwell an ear full which was bang out of order.

I stayed until the bitter end, very disappointing tonight. We just never really got going all night. I'm not going to be overly critical given the forced changes. Appleton made the logical substitutions with the personnel he had available & that changed nothing. I'm trying not to get to downbeat about it, so the positive for me is on Saturday we showed we can do it. We've got form for poor performances against sides we expect to beat. Still looking forward to a right battle on Saturday & perhaps we'll be in a better place mentally & Marv is back.

I didn't think Maxwell could have done much with at least 2 of the goals tonight. I'd still play him on Saturday.
