Blackpool v Portsmouth Official MatchNight Thread 01.12.20

It's always easy to say the ref was good when you win. But we've suffered with some really gormless idiots. This guy was thoroughly professional, showed no favours to either side, wasn't going to be hoodwinked by either side and let the game proceed. If wasn't a 'look at me, I'm the ref' display. I was well impressed and it allowed us to show what we can do.

Portsmouth never even really looked like scoring did they? They tried to dog in and we still beat 'em.

So much better than the start of the season, they're meant to be one of the better sides in this division as well. COME ON THE POOL!
You mean when we had about 20 brand new players on the pitch. Getting to know each others games now and it shows. Getting more cohesive week by week. Pleased for them all. Espec. Critch who was a game away from getting binned if you were to believe all you read on here
Glad he wasn't

We've played well in the last 3 league games, Peterboro, Doncaster and Portsmouth, 3 tough games - we just had the mad ten minutes at Doncaster. Mad shit happens sometimes, but we have started to control games most of the time - against some of the stronger teams in the division. One of these days our own fans will start to show some faith in the players selected, and the guy who selects them, and not get wound up and self-righteous when they see the team sheet.....

I missed the goal due to bladder emptying 😆 but not bothered I’ll see it later. Terrific professional performance all round.

If we had 20 players on the pitch, why didn’t we win every game.?😜😜

No, I don't. I felt he had a good game and was one of our better player. But he loses the ball so often for a league one footballer. And I think Gabriel is better. By a substantial distance better too. Would be unfair to go on about him tonight. As the whole squad deserve that win, it was fantastic.
Kurt's dislike of Turts trumps Wiz's feelings for Hubby.
For the record I wouldn't have started either tonight but would have picked them both on Saturday.
Well done to Critchy for selecting a winning combination for possibly our best overall performance of the season.
And another mention for the Referee for an excellent display.

I always try not to be too negative after a bad run or bad defeat, and similarly try not to get too carried away after a win...

...but to be honest it's really difficult not to after tonight. That was a seriously impressive performance, easily our best of the season. The reason being we came up against a well organised side who wanted to sit back, and yet we created chances, scored a great goal, and didn't give them a sniff all night.

I could pick out some individuals who had off nights but I don't think it's right tonight because they all worked their ar5es off to get the three points. Dougall is just a fantastic player and exactly the player we'd missed in those first few games.

I also want to single out Yates who I think is one of the least selfish players I've seen, a real team player. And his workrate is second to none. Really happy for him that he's finding form after his early struggles.

There was talk of that second half against Wimbledon as being a 'Carlisle' moment. Since then we've won 7 out of 8 in all competitions. Away win at Peterborough (unbeaten at home), and home win against Portsmouth (unbeaten away) in the last three. At what point do we say that it isn't a fluke and actually we're a really good side, or are we already at that point?
UTMP!

I think the main thing outside of the full back conversations is that our core 5 is very strong.

Maxwell with Ekpiteta and Ballard in front and then Robson and Dougall ahead are always going to have us in games.

Turts MOTM for me, just.

Only downside was the passing for the final ball. Did they not see the players in White between the pass and the B player? 4/5 times. Were they ghosts.

Well done Caldycritch, actually look like we know what we are doing now, both team and individuals.

Stand out players for me tonight, Turton, Robson, Dougall and Hamilton. Most had a decent game, Kaikai and Husband have had better nights. All in all though a good team performance. Loved the goal, great pass from Robson, pace and good cross from Hamilton, intelligent leaving of the ball by Yates timing and finish from Anderson. Nice!

Totally agree - just wish we'd have finished the game off.

The centre halves were good again.

Turton had his best game in ages but wasnt my man of the match...Dougall Robson Keshi CJ and Robson all candidates...I would go for Dougall

They were, without having loads to do, which is down to the whole team playing well. They certainly never put a foot wrong, only Husband and Kaikai that were 6 out of 10s, rest would be 7 and 8.

Too many times in the final third we wanted one touch too much. Of course, we're not Premier League and I think we can improve on that problem.
What we did do though was to control large parts of the game, which was impressive. As for Turton...had someone got on the end of his whipped-in cross and scored, AVFTT would be in meltdown.

The team performance was excellent, thought Dougal was outstanding, Robson filled in when he wasn't. Marv just gets better, Ballard needs to focus, when he has a full game without a wobbler, he'll win it on his own. Ollie looking assured, and guess what, he can whip a cross in. Jerry just runs and runs, keeps opposition pinned back, Keshie looked good tonight, a genuine threat. CJ is awesome, he needs a protector cos as the season goes on, I think he will get a lot of "attention"

Dougal should be captain. Now.

Eee but it were a reet fizzer

It’s funny reading all the comments after the game. A lot of people at the start were doubting the selection but NC got it absolutel spot on.

It was a superb performance from start to finish and I really like how NC is setting us up differently for each game depending on the team we’re facing. Pompey are a decent team in this division and we made them look very average and limited them to just two real chances all game.

I can’t wait for Saturday already and to see the further progress we can make in the coming weeks with the possibility of some coming and goings in January.

lots of good performances all round but dougall was outstanding for me. he was mr perpetual motion tonight and that energy and tempo is so important when you are looking to keep things ticking over in order to break down defensive teams like pompey. he sets a terrific example, brings others into the game and lets them play. he is captain material and we are lucky to have him.

I thought Robson ran the first half and Dougall the second.
Agree, Robson best player on the park first half but Dougall was even more outstanding in the second half. Kaikai was generally poor and the only other down side for me was that chance we gave them in stoppage time. That was very poor from us with both centre halves getting sucked under the ball and it gave them a clear chance.

I think Husband was involved in that incident and it could have ended very badly.

Sullay, hot and cold. Wasn't it Jimmy who got sucked under the ball more than the centre halves though - either way, fair point but not much to grumble about really.

I still think we feel like we're on for about 8th or 9th, but that's up from 14th I predicted at the outset! 8th would be fine by me tbh.

Kaikai is an enigma. In added time the ball was bobbling around our penalty box. He found the out ball and raced ahead to receive the second part of the 1:2. Great stuff, then he messed it up by overplaying it.

It's not been said so far anything about Portsmouth so I will.
Before the game the pre match talk in the media was all about a 'strong and free scoring' Pompy.
I saw a Pompy that struggled most of the night trying to contain a very well organised Blackpool who had them on the back foot for long periods of the match. They didn't look strong and with only two shots of note they hardly looked free scoring.
Make no bones about this Portsmouth are fancied to do well this season and tonight Blackpool made then look ordinary.
