Blackpool v Portsmouth Official MatchNight Thread 01.12.20

Excellent all round team display and a lot has been said above about individual performances however, Ekpiteta just improves every game he plays and is becoming very steady and assured given his wobbly performances at the start of the season. He’s striking up a good relationship with Ballard which is making the team more solid defensively.

Sullay, hot and cold. Wasn't it Jimmy who got sucked under the ball more than the centre halves though - either way, fair point but not much to grumble about really.

I still think we feel like we're on for about 8th or 9th, but that's up from 14th I predicted at the outset! 8th would be fine by me tbh.
If we can get to the end of Feb there or thereabouts, then the run in does not look too bad at all

Maybe. I dunno, live in the moment I say. Ipswich impressed me, Charlton looked good, but tbf, no one else has looked like much. Lincoln gave us a game but I don't think are there for the duration. I assume Hull are half decent, the Cods, like it or not, know what they're doing, a win on Saturday will be big. Not saying we can't do better, it's just my gut instinct at this point. We're a striker light, get one in and maybe. Just needs to be someone who can do a job, not a world beater but need someone else as an option up the middle.

Can't wait for Saturday. We've finally got confidence and Fleetwood have just lost so they will be looking to bounce back. Should be a really good game and one we hopefully win.

It's not been said so far anything about Portsmouth so I will.
Before the game the pre match talk in the media was all about a 'strong and free scoring' Pompy.
I saw a Pompy that struggled most of the night trying to contain a very well organised Blackpool who had them on the back foot for long periods of the match. They didn't look strong and with only two shots of note they hardly looked free scoring.
Make no bones about this Portsmouth are fancied to do well this season and tonight Blackpool made then look ordinary.
The Portsmouth reaction seems to be entirely of the view that they were terrible tonight and we were really no better. Terrible game between two poor teams on the night. Ha!

Definitely a striker light. Our weakness has been the final third and it still is but we saw a bit of improvement tonight. And Woodburn looked a bit better when he came on. Having Robson and Dougall feeding the front players helps.

They were terrible tonight because Blackpool made them look terrible.
Everything that Pompy tried to do Blackpool nullified.
Every time Blackpool went forward Pompy looked shaken.
Sometimes you just have to tip your hat and say the best team won.
Apparently Pompy haven't even got the class to do that🤦‍♂️

Yeah it's a bit shit.

** hell, I'd hate them to watch the MK Dons game.

It's always easy to say the ref was good when you win. But we've suffered with some really gormless idiots. This guy was thoroughly professional, showed no favours to either side, wasn't going to be hoodwinked by either side and let the game proceed. If wasn't a 'look at me, I'm the ref' display. I was well impressed and it allowed us to show what we can do.
Agree about the ref and if I heard it correctly only 22 years old. Some of the refs we've had this season have either been abject or seemed to have some grudge against us. Great team performance and tactics were spot on.

Totally agree - I think I said something like - he was there to facilitate the game and nothing else - which is what a ref should be, but so often they're their to pick up every little niggle or impose themselves on the match. He was spot on.

Two comments:
I saw Yates chase after a defender into the corner and really put him off when no other of ours were interested. That is commitment.
Dougall: yes, very good but does he have to try to do everything? He needs to learn when to handover to others.

I'd argue that's his strength. There was a period when all we did was handover to others. We'd have 20 passes but not one had intent. Since Dougall came in, that's much less the case. He takes the responsibility.

i think Portsmouth were the best team we have played this year, and we made them look ordinary. they look as though they can score goals, but they just wernt given the time to play. there have been games this season where we have been brilliant one half and frankly nowhere in the other. this time we were good, patient and controlled in the first half but it honestly looked as though we actually stepped up a gear for the second.

If only we'd sorted the defence at the start of the season.
It's not the FIFA video game thingy. Ekpiteta had to adapt and improve, Ballard was kept at Arsenal til deadline day unless they needed him, Gretarsson hadn't heard of grass etc. And the defeats were narrow, and we couldn't score. If only we had sorted the attack out....

Hopefully our strength in depth helps as injuries and fixture congestion comes. Great to have a win like that and to know we have a lot of quality who didn't start this game. Madine, Woodburn , Lubala , Kemp , William's, Virtue, Gatbutt Gabriel , grettarson, Mitchell... all capable of coming in and doing well. Sarcic may come good and I haven't seen Thornily.

And Ward.

You mean when we had about 20 brand new players on the pitch. Getting to know each others games now and it shows. Getting more cohesive week by week. Pleased for them all. Espec. Critch who was a game away from getting binned if you were to believe all you read on here
Glad he wasn't
I am as well, we seemed hopeless at breaking teams down and we never even looked like scoring if a team just dug their heels in - even when the poorer sides did it we looked terrible.

Last night a clearly well drilled, and one of the superior sides in the division tried it and it didn't work - shows how much they're developing, a credit to the players and the coaching staff!

Wonder what Matchday threads will be like when we return - can't imagine they'd reach the heady heights of 700 replies and 25k views!
