Blackpool v Rochdale Official Matchnight Thread 16.02.21

TEAM: Maxwell, Gabriel, Ekpiteta, Thorniley, Husband, Dougall, Stewart, Virtue, Kaikai, Simms, Yates

That's a bit negative for me.

Still no Madine either.

That midfield is not right at all. 2 holding midfielders, an out of any form Kaikai and Virtue who seems to get a game regardless. Disappointing. Similar to the Ipswich midfield which got trodden on.

Critch told us yesterday that Madine wouldn't be playing.

At least we have 2 strikers starting. Kaikai is an enigma but given our lack of options is a fair enough decision, playing Virtue on the right just doesn't work, he is a willing worker but won't be a winger whilst he has a hole in his bum!

I don’t get it, at home v Rochdale and we have Virtue out wide. So last weeks selection of Mitchell in the postponed game was enforced. Nothing against Virtue, but he’s not a winger and he has no pace.

The obvious selection was Mitchell, or Turton at RB and Gabriel wide midfield.

We have absolutely nothing to lose, we won’t go down, so be brave and go all out.

Let‘s hope NC has it right.

Virtue is not a right midfielder..... Grant Ward is and has played in central midfield most of the season, we revert back to 4-4-2 with Hamilton out and he puts a central midfielder right mid, talk about square pegs in round holes.
I think the idea is that Virtue may offer more support defensively to Gabriel than Ward does.

Virtue needs to step up tonight, I had high hopes for him this season but since he has come back from injury he has been pretty underwhelming. I'd rather have see the lad from Sunderland in there. Not much creativity in midfield.

Ward is also a better footballer either on the right or through the middle, I would have Virtue on the bench as cover for Dougall or Stewart.

I think that probably is the idea, I think a negative one, makes us less effective going forward.
I hope my opinion is proved worthless and we hammer them but the team just looks unbalanced to me.

Anyone think it could be 4-3-3?
The players selected would fit better in that formation.
Perhaps 4-3-1-2?

The team is too defensive. He's more worried about what the opposition might do than making them scared of us. Someone should tell him that the best form of defence is attack.

However, if all goes well I will happily apologise and admit Critch knows best. That's my preferred option. 🍊

Diamond shape maybe
it be better that Yates had Simms up top with him
kia Kia in a free role number ten
dougall sitting and Stewart and matty side by side maybe

Mitchell will be off in the summer and someone will get a very good player...he hasnt had a fair crack of the whip here
It’s a bit reminiscent of barkuizen. Highly talented, loads of potential on offer, played often out of position and ended up spending his best years away from bloomers even though he was pool at heart. You can see it happening with young Mitchell too, this game is made for him tonight.

Playing Simms instead of Embleton will be key imo. Simms can make runs in behind and create space for others, whereas Embleton is yet another midfielder who plays almost the whole game in front of the defence. It could make all the difference.
